900 or 2100 mhz in your area?
For those wanting to check if the Optus coverage in their area is on the 900 or 2100mhz (iPhone 3G friendly!) frequency you can do the following. You can also use the following method to investigate if your region is going to get an "upgrade" in the near future. (Also this information is not Optus specific, you can check Vodafone, Telstra etc as well.)
1. Go to
http://www.rfnsa.com.au/nsa/index.cgi
2. Click on the "Guest Login".
3. Enter the postcode of the area you wish to check in the "Quick Search" on the upper right of the screen.
4. Open all the listed towers in separate windows (or separate tabs!)
5. Look at the "Carrier Site Names and Codes" at the bottom of the window. You may close the windows/tabs where the carriers listed are those that you are NOT interested in.
6. On the windows/tabs that you have left (which should all relevant to the carrier you are interested in) click on the "Reports" tab.
7. Download the "Environmental EME Report" for each cell tower.
8. Open the "Environmental EME Reports".
9. On the first page of the Environmental EME Report it will list the cell towers current capabilities. On the second page it will list proposed cell tower cababilities. If OPTUS WCDMA2100 is listed then this tower is either iPhone 3G capable, or will be in the near future (depending on where you find the OPTUS WCDMA2100 capability listed.)
Hopefully this guide helps those wanting to know what coverage to expect (especially from Optus) in their region.
