I needed to buy a pre-paid phone (as I am only in the country a few more months) and queued outside Optus from 07:30 (I was third in line). Got to 08:45am before someone said that they had no 16G pre-paids in stock (it turns out they never did, only the 8GB). The staff at the store were really poorly informed about pretty much everything. I have since phoned every Optus reseller in the metropolitan Adelaide area and have concluded that none of them received any 16GB pre-paid iphones (only the 8GB). They are not expecting any for several weeks (at the earliest).

This sucks, why can't I just walk into Next Byte and pop any sim into the bloody iPhone?!!!! This is so uncool Apple. Not everyone lives in one country for 24 months straight!!!

It's like no body knew about the TeleChoice store on the corner of Elizabeth and La Trobe in Melbourne. I got there at 6:30AM, and was first in line for the 7AM opening. At the time of opening, there where roughly 12 people in line.

Most happy customers :)

While, the Optus Store on Elizabeth and Bourke had roughly 150 in line...many un-happy customers!

So what does one do in this situation?
Pulls out their brand new 16GB Black iPhone and walks do the huge queue playing with Google Maps - WIN!

Any news of telstra, went in and they dont have phone or paperwork, said its just like normal plans.

Tested GPS on the demo and it was crap indoors a circle about 1.5kms in diameter, the 3G is WAY lighter then the original. and downloaded iPint, WAY SICK

Two steps ahead of you adamerr :)

However I'm waiting for next week. I think the Apple Store will have plenty of stock, and if not they'll get them in before anywhere else.

It sounds like the whole of Australia has no 16GB prepaid iPhones. At least not in Melbourne!

I waited in line at 6 and as soon as I got in, I was told that of the 5 prepaids they had in the store, all were 8GB. I went to almost every Optus dealer in the CBD and they either had NO prepaids to begin with, or didn't have 16GB delivered. There was also a Telechoice on Swanston St that didn't even have ANY stock delivered yet (not even contract iPhones) - they were expecting it to arrive at lunchtime. On the way home I dropped by the Camberwell Optus shop, same deal - no 16GB.

At least when I visited all of those stores, I put my name down for pre-order/raincheck, and I was either the first or one of the first on the list, so hopefully I won't be waiting too long (at least next week to 3-4 weeks). I can handle the wait so that's no problem.

But it was just amazing discovering how ill informed most of the staff were. And also that most stores had about 100 in stock, but almost all were for contracts. Understandably, Optus wants to take advantage of their superior plans, who would blame them? Still, it's odd that there were absolutely no 16GB iPhones on prepaid.

For those who got one today, enjoy!

telstra.....

We've got the official booklet of iPhone 3G plans in our hands, and they have been built to let you mix and match the data and voice levels to suit your needs. However, the prices on data are severe, clearly pointing to Telstra pushing customers toward using their Wi-Fi access points as much as possible.

In the all important data terms, $5 gets you 5MB with overuse charged at $1/MB. Then...
$10 / 20MB / $1/MB
$29 / 80MB / $1/MB
$59 / 200MB / $0.25/MB
$89 / 1GB / $0.25/MB
$119 / 3GB / $0.25/MB

Or you can just Pay As You Go for data at... $2/MB!!!

i tries activating my prepaid optus iphone about 2 hours ago and its still not working. Just called optus and they say the systems are down and to wait until 4pm

Epic fail.

Any word on Vodafone's excess charges?

MattyK, just make sure you either buy the 100mb of data for $11.95 or you never, EVER use the internet over 3G.

2c per kb data access means you could be potentially paying $20 to view 1-2 websites.
