$40 for 5gb's isn't actually all that bad, depending on your browsing habits. I was considering getting on that bandwagon, but 24 months is a long time.

For the iPhone, I wouldn't imagine anymore then 1gb is needed. For one, no flash on iPhone Safari. And aside from the iTunes store you can't really download a lot of files.

What I don't care for are these cap plans. I dont like monitoring my credit and I'd just prefer they give a set number of minutes and texts.

The USA might be behind in mobile technology, but the prices for cell phone plans can't be beat. When I'm there I use Tmobile and pay $40 for 1500 minutes, $6 for unimited internet and $10 for 1000 texts.

And what's the deal with having to pay extra to call landlines?

There have been various but not widespread reports that the iPhone will hit our shores earlier than the 11 of July as said by Steve Jobs, but I thought what was interresting is what was just posted from reporter Mitchell Bingemann at the media launch of the New Sydney Apple Store
Although the first floor was not graced by Apple’s new 3G iPhone, Ron Johnson (Apple’s senior vice president of Retail) hinted that it could be arriving soon.

“You might find a phone there in a little bit, but we’re not here to talk about that today,” he quipped.

hmmmm intriguing and I have not seen a post in this thread about the the authorized carriers that have been found in the latest SDK that includes Vodafone, Optus and Telstra, It looks like nextG might be used for the iPhone after all :D

Telstra to sell 3G iPhone

From Australian IT

In a case of better late than never, Telstra, the gorilla of the telco market, will come to Apple's iPhone launch party but may lag its rivals by almost two weeks with the handset.

Telstra will join Optus and Vodafone in launching the new 3G version of Apple's new iPhone in July and Telstra chief Sol Trujillo may make an announcement next week.

Vodafone and Optus will begin selling the iPhone on July 11 and the much hyped widget will likely drive plenty of feet through Apple's new CBD Sydney retail store which dwarfs Telstra's new concept store directly across the road. Apple's shop opened this evening, with Apple tragics coming from as far afield as San Francisco to witness the event.

Telstra stayed quiet as its rivals wracked up marketing points by standing in the glow of the local iPhone launch, but will now go ahead and sell the device according to people close to the company. The telco is targeting a date of July 22, they said.

Telstra retail chief David Moffatt and a team of his senior executives were given a preview of the new Apple store last week, sources said.

While the old iPhone, which was never sold here, was designed for the low bandwidth US telephony market and only works on GSM networks, the new version can operate on the much higher bandwidth 3G networks that Telstra, Hutchison, Vodafone and Optus are building out in Australia.

It also operates on the rare 850 Mhz frequency which Telstra's NextG network uses.

Local carriers have already been swamped with online generated interest in the device. Vodafone's pre-registration website for the iPhone has attracted about 40,000 visitors daily since opening the site early last week, while Optus has stopped accepting advance deposits for the gadget iPhones, as it can't keep up with demand.

"Due to an overwhelming response, we have removed the deposit-taking mechanism from the www.optusiphone.com.au website," said an Optus spokesperson earlier this week.

Telstra has persistently refused to comment on the iPhone. "Watch this space ... nothing's changed," Telstra spokesman Peter Taylor said today.

So far there is no word on whether Australia's fourth mobile network Hutchison's "3" will sell the iPhone.

Interesting as the new Telstra ads are really pushing video calling. I took that as their strategy to counteract the iphone since Telstra weren't offering it they would push a non iphone feature, really heavily.

Although I don't want video calling, does this mean the iphone WILL infact have it?

Why would Telstra waste so much money advertising a feature iphone can't use, if they will get iphone??

I really hope that 3 does get the iPhone. Its good for us. We could have 4 different networks all trying to sell us an iPhone trying to beat each others prices.

One of my mates (who has been temporarily banned and cannot post this info) called up a few of the Australian carriers the other day...

He called '3':
They said to call back in 15 days for more info.

He called Telstra:
The lady said that there are on going negotiations and that that is all she could say.

Optus & Crazy Johns:
They confirmed that they are selling it with an option for it to be unlocked.

Interesting.

Interesting.

Vodafone just emailed me a watch this space email and to reassure I was one of the early ones...

no new news on pricing as of yet?

So far:

I think everyone is waiting for everyone else to go first. A big game of corporate chicken.

hilarious though, if they just didn't release the prices and made us all guess how much money we needed on the day. I'm just wondering where all the marketing is, 18days till' it's released and you'd think there would at least be an ad or something.

Well here's a tip for the executives: Data. Rates. With the iPhone, that one line will make or break you. And remember your standard is "unlimited data" from AT&T, not the crap precedence you currently have.

^ +1.

It's amazing how many people think 100MB will be adequate/fair for the iPhone. We should be talking in GB, not MB.

unlimited is the key term.
along with unlimited text. and 300minutes worth of calls.
for $35 p/m.
wishful thinking, but Telstra has done it with their hiptop.

I'd consider paying a flat rate for unlimited everything. Although I know it will never happen.

It really pisses me off that they differentiate between landlines and mobiles. Like it's really costing the mobile companies that much money that they have to charge that much.

agreed.
what im looking for though is something simliar to vodafones pre-paid maxi-cap things.
i dont want to go on a 'contract'

Something like this would be good!

Shame its only with 3mobile

i dont like 3 though. lol.
they brand their products and i dont want my iPhone to have a dirty, great "3" anywhere on it.

if optus offered this though...... :D:D:D

Yes but if Australia gets an unlocked phone then you would be able to use 3's plans and not have a branded phone.

Regardless I don't think Apple lets companies brand their phone as none are branded now.

hopefully they will release an unlocked iPhone.
certain people have said its ?against the law? not to

but i dont know how that works.

I have just got an email from Optus. And what I gather is that the stores are going to be opening 2 hours before business hours for those who put a deposit, rather than at 6pm or whenever.

Plus, we’ll be providing more information on early store opening, priority queuing and other details for the launch day.

i just got one as well.
but i didnt pay a deposit, so i never got that information on eraly store openings part...

its a pretty useless email though, it just reiterates what we have known since June 9th.

damn Optus give me a price.
