We all know it won't be as good as a real camcorder, however I really doubt Apple would have allowed it on to their phone if it didn't at least look "very good." Didn't they not enable video on the 3G because it was not up to their par? Apple is a company that puts a lot of emphasis on aesthetics so I would assume their new phone shoots some pretty decent video. We gotta remember it's a phone, not a real camcorder.

By all accounts, folks at WWDC said the footage shown on screen looked phenomenal.

From Engadget's liveblog:

"11:03AM Video recording looks amazing. The quality is extremely impressive.

11:03AM Big applause for the video. It was pretty stunning."

What he said...I'm sure the video recordings will look fine. I wouldn't sweat it.

Heres the actual link to that video on the Apple site.

http://movies.apple.com/media/us/ip...-us-20100607_462x308.m4v?width=462&height=308

462x308 resolution.

and yet under the video it states

"Actual unedited footage shot on iPhone 4."

Thats a blatent lie then? Its been resized, so its been edited then, hasnt it?

I think technically 'editing' would be splicing or otherwise modifying the coloring, quality, exposure, etc. I'm not sure 'resizing' really counts.

+1. And like others have said, it's not a 720P video.

NO, it's not a blatant lie because iPhone 4 probably has the ability to record other resolutions than 720p!

If anyone has a link to an untouched 720p iPhone 4 clip please post it. Otherwise all this is useless speculation.

No, Edited is another word for altered. That video has been altered from 720 down to 308.

IT has been shrank to fit inside the iPHone border that it is in.

Yeah, its been shrank. but they should of just left in the full 720p video. They've resized it which defeats the purpose of the quality of the video

Well I guess next Thursday I will be able to judge for myself, thanks for that link (best one yet). I only wish it was in full size....

and I dont think that speculation is useless, it can prepair you for the real thing, and its a good way to waist a few minutes:rolleyes:

The youtube link looked dreadful, but the Apple.com video is smaller so it doesn't look as bad but its also terrible. I couldnt imagine watching that lousy image on an HDTV. The EVO video is clear and less jumpy, but the framerate is dreadful. Both fail.
Neither video is useful for anything.

Until someone posts an actual, untouched file dumped from both devices, there's nothing to see. The Evo file has been compressed by Youtube and the Apple video is 462x308. There are no valid comparisons to be drawn.

I would take a huge amount of screen real estate. APple just wanted it to look pretty on the webpage.

I seriously doubt one of those resolutions is 462x308.

As I said on the first page, until we have an original .mov with a 1280x720 H.264 stream @30 FPS there is no way to know what the iPhone video will look like. The real limiting factors will be the lens and the bitrate.

The vid on apple's site looks awesome. Of course, I'm using the camera on the 3G right now which is slightly better than crayons on paper  Can't wait!

It's not a lie, but your monitor doesn't have the pixel density to display the full resolution when viewing that video on the web on an "iPhone sized" slice of your screen.

If you think the choppy FPS of the EVO is better than the video on Apple's site, then you probably don't deserve to watch anything in HD anyway, as you're not able to appreciate the quality!

that coppieness you see from the Evo is from the person panning so fast. That will happen on the Iphone 4 also. This happens on all HD camcorders right now and it's annoying as hell. Also ppl need to stop comparing the EVO video to the Iphone's video because we are watching two different things with different lighting.

Uhm, no.

If I play a Blue-Ray of Avatar on a 1080p TV and then hook it up to a 720p TV I haven't "edited Avatar."

I doubt you'll find many people who would say that "editing" is what happened in that case.

It's a shame that they didn't post the full version like they did with the photo samples. I'm sure they used some compression to make it load quicker.

The two things I take away from the clip is beautiful color/contrast and smoooooth frame rate.

The EVO video I have seen has been choppy and dark.

Thank you DJRM. That was the best example yet, in that example the iPhone 4 was superior not by much but it wasnt in the same spot and it was much shorter and a bit shakey. Well at least its not worst than the EVO:apple:

Thats the Florida intra Coastal, where are you ? Boynton beach? No Im way off...

lol OP were you expecting professional production quality?
because the demo is pretty good for a phone. and after all its not meant to be a cam corder killer.
