Yes that was one of the best links shown, I am happy that we have been able to get some good links to a few videos that show that the quality is better than the EVO. I was a bit worried after I saw the first apple vid that was a youtube download.

READ THIS:

The video in Apple's site is not 720p, so it looks "not so good". Even my 3GS video looks better.

So I agree 100% with the OP. It's really weird move by Apple posting full quality photo samples, but NOT full quality video samples.

The back illuminated sensor in the iPhone 4 is already used in Consumer HD Cams, which it is nicely designed for. However, it remains to be seen the quality from the different optical lenses that are obviously not as good as an HD Cam would have.

I have to agree that a camera phone, even the iphone 4 camera, will have some degree of compression. I would not use it for recording precious memories of your child. Most camera phones are only really useful for recording the cops when they are beating your ass with a baton at three in the morning.

No. I just visited some friends with kids. Their kid did some funny thing, I captured it on iPhone and emailed to them in seconds.

They really love it because whenever they get their video camera, their kid would be doing something else not as interesting.

Oh yeah I agree. I am not saying it's not worth using. It just wont replace a high quality video camera. But most people want mind.

One thing is for sure, the Evo has ridiculously awful audio quality and the picture stutters. It's hard to make a judgement on the iPhone's video quality, but I've heard audio. Clayton Morris uploaded a video recorded using the front camera on the iPhone 4 and the audio was great even at in such a noisy place as WWDC.

Too late. Also try to download the video to your desktop and view it from there. I know for a fact that it's not playing in 720p... My monitor right now is only set at 1200x1024, and it's only taking up 1/3 of the screen... so more like 360p.

"Actual unedited footage shot on iPhone 4." - Something just doesn't smell right with this.

lies!
the video you linked to in the first page was uploaded by ObeyBrandon. While that video was made by apple, ObeyBrandon didn't upload it to youtube in HD.

http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/hd-video-recording.html

THIS is the only place you can see real footage from apple (UNEDITTED)
I can see why your called macfanboy you believe everything apple tell you lol :D:D look at the properties of that apple video in the above post it's NOT HD and HAS been edited in some form because thats the HD recording section yet the video isn't

It's been resized. It hasn't been edited.

I tend to agree with the resized not edited coment, however it does say that it was recorded in the lowest setting of HD options available in the screenshot above.

I think the link some one posted that had the evo and iphone in the same video (if it is true that that was shot by an iphone) shows the iphone has better quality.

But I gotta agree with the person who posted the Nokia and Samsung video. Their samples were most definitely better than either the Evo or iphone.

Thing is, I'm betting the EVO and iPhone are better smartphones in general (or rather their OS is better). I am not sure one would argue that any other OS really is in the same playing field (as in seems to really attract the same market) as the iOS or Android.

That being said, on a slightly related note I was not impressed with the Evo's camera but I think that can be fixed by Android updates. It had a super slow lag between pressing the take picture button and it actually taking a picture. I am betting this is something that is more the fault of Android. Not that I know much about these but I do know my 3G had the same problem (it was practically useless as a camera cause most likely whatever you were taking a picture of would move by the time it actually took the picture) when I first got it but it seemed to immensely improve when the 3Gs came out and they had a new iPhoneOS update. Now taking a picture of your kid, lag between hitting the picture button and when it takes a picture is a *huge* deal. You see your kid doing something cute, you go to take the picture, by the time the camera actually takes the picture after you hit the button, the child has moved on to other things.

I wouldn't count on any smartphone camera to capture something that important.

Maybe keep your current phone and buy a real camera.

To be fair, he won't really know how important it is until 18-20 years off.

It might be important if the kid turns out good, but if the kid turns out to be a dud, might have saved some cash and/or worry.

The iPhone display they use in their keynotes, etc, where you can view the iPhone's screen on your computer... is anything like that available to the public or developers?

By the the specs of that video are just slightly less than half the actual resolution of the phone... So it seems clearly it was recorded in a lower resolution.

It says the video is unedited, it does not say it is 720p.

I assume this portrays to a more common recording setting where people will be able to record much longer periods of time and manage better editing right on the device.

Sure you can record in 720p, but it may not necessarily be what everyone is doing all the time. Again I don't see anything on Apple's site that says that specific clip is HD or 720p.

I just watched apple hd video of the water and the SF bridge or whatever bridge that was and the quality was terrible. It was fuzzy and didnt look 720p or hd, if I played that on my TV it would look so bad, I couldnt even watch it on my computer screen. Then I checked out a hd video recorded by a evo4g and it looked great compaired to the iphone 4 video.

The only reason I stuck with the iPhone this year was because the video recording quality was supposed to be sooo good, and I have a two year old daughter I want to record all I can. Does anyone have a good example of or a link to an example of iphone 4 hd video??

After the terrible 12hr pre order experience if the video looks that bad I will be selling my iPhone and getting the 2gig Moto droid when it comes out.

What are your thoughts?

nice story

I'm not really sure what you are seeing, but I thought the video recording that apple released was pretty good for a camera phone. If you are expecting it to be on par with a real video camera or even a Flip HD, then you will be disappointed with any phone out currently. The EVO on the other hand takes some rather disappointing video. The frame rate is so horrendus that a video of anything moving is extremely choppy. Maybe search YouTube to get some actual videos posted by users from the EVO. You won't find any videos from the iPhone until it is released.

I have been looking for a real 720p video (NOT downscaled to Youtube or some crap like that) from the iPhone 4 to evaluate. Any links available?

I can tell you that the EVO 720p quality is just atrocious. Record even drops to 10 fps in low light! No joke!

My brother has the HTC has has recorded and uploaded HD video from mountain biking and I have to say the quality was really good. I hope the iPhone is just as good, if not better :)

Funny how HD video recording was one of Apple´s big selling points, but no one has seen to this day an actual 720p video recording shot with iPhone 4.

Instead we have seen just one, JUST ONE resized crappy video sample. Very un-Apple.
