If true this will not end well! I will finally step across to the dark side with either a GS II or one of several new HTC phones to be released in the coming weeks.

Please don't leave me with this option Apple!

iPhone 3GS is the second best-selling smartphone of 2011 in the U.S, and that is over two years old and was only available on a single carrier. Again, it looked exactly the same as the 3G and it still sells. Gee, it had a video camera and compass, BIG WHOOP! But it still sold.

If iPhone 4 is "old" now to some, it doesn't mean it is old to millions of others. To millions of people who live in a third world country and run on prepaid, any iPhone model is still "new" to them.

That says a lot about consumers intellect.

It sounds like a good idea But

Agreed.
Users could easily distinguish between the models by year ... no need to keep adding numbers and letters.

It sounds like a good idea But then Apple would be tied to a yearly release cycle. Then if it takes more then a year to release a generation of iPhone for what ever reasons supply etc. like 15 months how would they name it then?
I'm going 4s

im calling b.s. on this one.

i personally wouldn't mind if the form of the 4 was maintained (im planning on upgrading from a 3gs regardless), but i think there's a brand new phone on the way.

after the total leak of the iphone 4 last year, surely apple is putting extra effort into keeping 5 in the shadows. yet all of these "4s" parts are leaking all over the place?? i don't buy it... and seriously, 16 months?!?!?!

Im not sure that the delay in the release can be used as solid evidence for a revolutionary new iPhone design.

There could be any number of factors other than apple deliberately waiting: Earthquakes/Tsunamis effecting supply routes, explosions at foxconn plants, or maybe just a desire to have one of their hottest selling items fresh at the most lucrative time of year. Maybe all of them.

Not discounting that it could be because of a redesign, or waiting for some technology to mature, I'm just saying the delay could be for any number of reasons.

I do hesitate at the thought of the redesign, just simply because of the lack of leaked parts. But, honestly, we've seen analysts say the opposite. JP Morgan less than a week ago pointed out the two phone argument.

If there is no new redesign, how is this any different than the one from 2009?
Because a new phone has been released almost the same time every year. It's been almost 4 months from the one year mark with no word of a new iPhone. I would say it's fair to allow customers to assume something bigger, like a redesign, is in store.

Same here. After being out in the wild with a BB Im going to come back to apple and just get a 4. It kicks the arse of many phones out at the moment, it still is fast and the real excitement is the new ios5. I can't be bothered to get the new one due to the cost and the (possible) waiting time to get hold of one. Im sure whatever comes out will be great, but for me the next OS is going to be the fun part.

not interested. Still waiting for 7" 4G ipad.
My throw away Virgin mobile wildcard is all i need in a phone. ipad2 is too big and iphone 4 is too small. Sigh!

Yep 7" is still the sweetspot, haven't a clue why they still resist :(. I might even go for one at that size, despite the fact that I don't think I have even a single use for an iPad of any size.

Meanwhile, a thread this large and all I needed was the first page - loved the one about stopping the unfounded speculation, classic stuff :D. I'm hoping for a redesign, might even go for buying outright if so, my 4 isn't quite 100% after a dunking....

That would be seriously disappointing.

As usual from Apple, this is based on subjective reality.

Reality #1) The iPhone 4G / 4S / 4GS or whatever suffix they finally do in print for is announced. Big new features -- does Facetime without WiFi. The iPhone 5 is on hold due to supply and manufacturing issues.

Reality #2) The iPhone 4 plus is announced by Tim. Steve storms the stage and goes "I can do better!" as Steve takes over the stage and announces the iPhone 5 in a passing the torch product launch to Tim. Roles may be reversed.

Deus ex machina is alive and well.

I don't really care about a redesign, BUT what I really hope for is a bigger screen. Not only for my fingers but also for my eyes. A bigger screen equals easier to read and easier to push the correct letters when typing an SMS or email.

IF no screen size increase then I'll hold onto my 3GS as Softbank Japan force you into a 26 month contract. Thieving mongrels.

I don't think there's going to be a new phone model after 16 months.

lets face it there's a whole bunch of people who haven't upgraded from the 3G and 3Gs.

Apple is a business. I don't see any reason for them to launch a brand new model when everyone is already happy with the iphone 4. This one is going to be a minor update.

We've only seen new third party cases made from the iphone 5 mould but I think Apple is going to hold off on that till next year.

The iPhone remained largely the same in terms of design for the first 3 years. Still, they managed to sell lots of them, and nobody complained that the 3GS looked old or too similar to the first iPhone. I don't see a new design coming after only one and a half year, and I'm sure they will sell lots of them. maybe a new design is in the pipeline for June 2012?

Reading these comments, I'm astounded by the number of posters who expect the upcoming iPhone 5 to be a re-branded iPhone 4. The competition has improved exponentially since Apple released the 3GS. An incremental upgrade from the iPhone 4 won't fly -- especially when all eyes are on Tim Cook. Apple -- one of the most well capitalized companies in the world -- has had 16 months to prepare for an exciting product launch. An iPhone 4 redux will sell, but it won't excite. At all. Who really cares about a 1ghz processor and new camera?

I love Apple. I love giving them my money. And using a 3GS without lock and volume buttons isn't fun. But if Tim Cook brings nothing to Oct. 4th except an arrogant lack of imagination, my upgrade's going where the super-AMOLED screens are.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

Right... because iPhone 2011 rolls off the tongue better than iPhone 5 or 4S.

There will always need to be a version - whether it's a number or a year is mostly irrelevant but in my opinion, attatching a year to a model of phone would be a mistake.
