Ok $179 maybe $199 tops. What do you think the percentage of Android handsets sold and in use $199 and under is? I'd wager it is 90% if not higher. The few geeks who drop $700 on the latest are the extreme, extreme minority.

Pop into a Boost or Virgin dealer. Plenty of android econoboxes, which is where Android builds most of its base.

The new GS3 will cost $199 or $229. That is standard and $199 will be the lowest. The Galaxy S2 is still $229, the One S & One X is $199.
Thats how much a new iPhone costs with a contract so what is your point?

I'm talking total, outright price of the phone. Not subsidized. GS3 is the exception, not the rule. Most folks walk in and get the $199 or less Android handset often for much less maybe even free. That's the vast, vast majority of Android users.

So because Apple never lowers their price and rips you off your saying that is better? Glad you like getting ripped off by Apple. I certainly wouldnt pay $200 for a two year old iP4. But wait...you CAN get a $49 dollar iP4 if you sign up for a two year contract at Best Buy

Wonder how many are flocking to pick that up? Im sure the other phone makers using Android about crapped themselves when they saw that ad

I don't know. I buy my iPhone's outright. Any one with a little common sense in the math department can figure out it is a better deal in the end versus the contract. So the various promotions mean nothing to me. But for the record, I'd take a $49 iP4 over whatever Android is being hawked that day.

I am curious, where do you live? I ask because buying outright does not make any sense whatsoever on any of the US carriers, unless you know you won't be keeping the phone for two years. Whether you subsidize a phone or not, the monthly price is the same (they don't give you a discount on your monthly bill for buying outright). So I can pay $700+ for my phone and still pay $80 a month for the plan, or I can sign a two year contract, pay $200 for the phone, and still pay that $80 per month for the plan. I used the $80 a month as an example, that price can be lower or higher depending on features, but the point still remains.

I am in the USA, and I use Straight Talk prepaid service. Cost is about $42 per month paid 3-months at a time. No contract. I have no use for the price gouging and scam schemes of the big carriers. You are correct that with the Big 3 there is no advantage to owning the handset as far as paying less for the monthly service. (Other than avoiding an ETF $350+ per line etc if you decide to leave)

Turns out to be a wash I guess for those that have a good discount on their line. We pay about $60 per line with AT&T. Not bad either way you look at it. :)

So with no iPhone to choose from with them, which one of their older Androids are you using? ...which BTW are $129 on up to $329. Where are the cheap ones for $50 on down to free? Those phones they have are crap except for maybe the Optomis but i havent tried one and that one is the $329 phone.
What is a ZTE phone?

I like no contract as much as anyone but i have 4 lines on my plan. It isnt just me and no way im paying full price for a phone.

You missed his point. He buys the phone outright and pays a no contract straight talk price. On a single line of service there is a slight savings even with a pretty good ATF (discount) factored into a contracted line. On multiple lines the savings become negligible by the second line and at 3+ lines the contract is the cheaper way to go. Again, this is if you have a discounted applied to your account (many companies offer this eg Best Buy, USPS, etc.)

I tried the Samsung SIII for sakes - would never think of moving to a crappy plastic Samsung Phone though it has crossed my mind to always try and use one... its never been possible.

I have an Apple ecosystem at home and at office. - Macbook/ iMac / 6 Apple tv's / iPads etc - the full set up....

I must say this phone looks and feels so cheap as if its a 5 years old's toy from walmart..... rubbish I must say.....

Thank good Apple keeps to the quality materials etc... though I have had screen issue's ( tint etc ) they swap them out straight away.

Can't wait for the new iPhone :D:apple: way to goooooooooo.

The fact that you have 34 dislikes for a pro-iPhone post on a Apple discussion forum should tell you something about how crappy your OP was. I bet this isn't how you imagined this thread would go, amirite?

Up to 44 dislikes now. Lol..

Samsung is annoying.

I'd just like to leave this interesting comparison. And the build quality of Samsung phones is quite good. The nexus has no flex, feels solid, and the back cover stays secure and is no lose. It also does much better than the iphone in drop/abuse tests. I thought this comparison shows how much Apple marks up the iPhone.

It's an iPhone 4, what did you expect?

Great.... I never said that it could not take a beating. Maybe you like to play rugby with your phone on you.... most people don't.

The SIII is not cheap it feels cheap in your hand.

Even the most careful person can get banged into while they're out and the phone goes flying, or step out of the car and it falls out of your pocket.

You don't have to be a clumsy idiot to drop your phone.

If they did people would spend some money and buy them like they do for the iPhone. That is the reason they need to have cheaper phones..... so people will buy them - cost being more attractive than hardware/software.

Oh sorry androids have to deal with the crappy overlaid and over delayed software......

Android phones aren't cheap. It is apple that is priced higher in order to maintain a bigger profit margin. You know like most branded products in life?
Gucci, ferrari, armani etc. Apple is the equivalent. It is not for everyone!

Android is over delayed? How can it have more features then?

you clearly own an iPhone for the image!! lol

Ok am I am not going to argue anymore on this subject! We can both go on and on.The SIII is more durable ok!!!

But its feels like crap in the hand & that's it. It may last a drop or what ever but one does not in a normal stance, drop a phone everyday, but for sure would be holding it in the hand everyday.

If it feels like crap its feel like crap. Suck it up and feel the crap when its out next week.

I was in Dubai so I had picked it up and that is my stance on the phone and its no big deal.

When I read threads like this it makes me sad that idiots buy the same products that I like.

If you don't want people to discuss your stance then don't post on a public message board.

I am talking about how the product feels in the hand and you are talking about the product durability. Both are different things.

Have you held the SIII?

Quite simple really

GSIII is a better phone. And then you open the Android store and start downloading apps. Then it's not so great anymore.

Pay $700 for a Samsung - sell it for $200.

Pay $700 for an iPhone - sell it for $450

Not yet. Don't know if I will either as I'm not getting one, but nearly every review I've read says it's a pleasure to hold and naturally contours with the hand.

Both good points.

The quality of iOS apps is definitely better the majority of the time, but sometimes the freedom of Android allows you to do better things on the Android counterparts. For example, the Spotify app for Android crashes fairly often when adding/removing songs (not when listening - phew!), but it does allow me to add songs on my device to my Spotify playlists. That feature for me makes the Android counterpart better than the iOS one, even though it's not as stable.

Screen size looks impressive and it's the first android phone that has quiet smooth performance.

But without photostream, iTunes music match, app store and iTunes it doesn't make sense in my life. Quad core, 8 cores, it doesn't matter.
