I can understand Apple's introduction of neon colors, which are identical to those in the iPod Nano line, in the iPhone line in order to match the high contrast coloring of iOS 7, as well as diversify the product and open the gate for low-cost, plastic casings, but a gold/champagne plated iPhone 5S is something is something I cannot comprehend.

While it makes sense in one area (it would likely become a top-seller in Apple's high-income, Middle-Eastern markets) I still cannot grasp this as a fact. A gold iPhone? Really?

This rendering someone did earlier in the thread (based on a parts leak) actually looks quite nice. The volume buttons part leak indicate a color similar to the color option you see with cars (my sister owns a champagne colored Lexus SUV), not some tack gold bling. Of course it's all speculation at this point. I guess in Kuo's mind if he throws enouh *** at the wall something will eventually stick.

Maybe Apple is introducing the "gold" iPhone for all of the whiners who complain they're no longer better than everyone else since the iPhone is now sold at Walmart and Apple has (apparently) "stooped" to making plastic phones.

If it's the muted "champaigne" color I can see it doing fairly well.

So that probably means:

On contract
5C - 8GB $99
5C - 16GB $199
5C - 32GB $299

Then, if you want a fingerprint reader
5S - 32GB $399
5S - 64GB $499
5S - 128GB $599

No chance in hell Apple increases the base price of their biggest seller by $200. No chance in hell.

I use no case on my iPhone 5 and have been terribly impressed with how well it holds up. I've even dropped it on concrete a few times and you can barely tell. The only sign of wear is along the back edges, mostly by the corners. Overall, I've been extremely impressed with how well the anodized aluminum finish has held up, and I can say the same for the aluminum frame itself.

Remember that old saying "Don't throw stones in a glass house"? The problem there is not the house, it's the stones. And even if you think the house is the problem, then you only seem to be in the wrong house with inappropriate expectations. Nothing is inherently wrong with the house just because you can't take care of it properly. And don't come back trying to qualify your expectations because you're not the one who built the house.

So I don't know what you're doing with your phone, but either take better care of the expensive thing you seem to own or go get a case for it.

Damage is all subjective. I think the use of Al was not the greatest for durability, yea it looks good. I'm sensitive to mine as well (OCD??) so I use a case. Had next to no visible scratches on my droid, plastic phone.

Anyone that gets a gold phone needs to be voted off the earth. The same goes for anyone that manufactures a gold phone.

Knowing the state of NAND flash storage capacities vs speeds, I would not order the 128GB option. At most, I'd stick at 64GB, given that single 64GB NAND chips have gotten faster reads/writes.

Many won't know this and probably never realize the read/write speed on their phones. I am with you though, i would go 64GB right now but not 128 GB. On the other hand, I am, have, and likely will be fine with 32GB for a very long time.

As for gold, this seems outrageous. Product Red, maybe, but not gold.

Okay, I am curious, as I am in the market for a 128 GB iPhone (although not in gold, if this is the only option): Could real-life difference of the read/write speed really become a factor? In what form – longer to load music and videos before they start or something like that? Can't really imagine that, but as you people seem to know more about this topic than I do, I wanna ask just to be sure...

What, so irrespective of the performance, you'll pass because of the numbers? Like it says in the original article, because Apple are controlling the whole design process of all the components, they can optimise their use in a way that other manufacturers can't. Just because a Samkia Whatever III has got 8GB of RAM doesn't mean an iPhone needs it to perform as well.

Apple may be "controlling" the entire design process as well as the user experience - that doesn't keep Safari from reloading tabs on me all the time due to a lack of RAM.

The more colorful icon apps is also directed at Asias color sensibilities. It looks a little garish to western eyes, but it doesn't to other cultures. We are seeing a huge Asia play by Apple in the next three months. Launching on China Mobile at the same time is part of this. Get ready for some record sales.

Asia, garish? You really don't know anything. Pay a visit to Japan or China or Korea and you'll see. The 3 major colors there are red, black, and yellow(white in the case of Japan) Actually, Asians are less forthcoming when it comes to colors than Westerners. From their points of view, Americans look almost flamboyant. Besides, iOS 7's colors are way too bright to be called Asian. The colors there is usually more deep and solid, like iOS 6.

EDIT: unless you are talking about middle or west Asia then I'm clueless.:D

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has offered accurate information on Apple's upcoming product plans numerous times, has issued a new research note claiming that the iPhone 5S will be available in a gold casing in addition to Apple's traditional white and black options. There will also be an option for larger 128 GB storage. The possibility of a gold or champagne colored iPhone 5S option has been raised a few times in recent months, but Kuo is the most credible source yet to indicate that the iPhone 5S will indeed be available in that color.

The new 128 GB storage option would double the current maximum 64 GB storage option and could mean that Apple discontinues the 16 GB storage option for the iPhone 5S as Apple has typically only offered three different storage options for most devices.

Kuo goes on to note that the new device will likely add a 1 GB LPDDR3 RAM chip and that the new A7 processor will afford Apple the ability to improve system performance.Apple will reportedly unveil the iPhone 5S, which Kuo claims will come with a sapphire-covered home button with a fingerprint sensor, at a media event on September 10. Like previous iPhone launches, Apple is likely to launch the iPhone 5S a few weeks after its unveiled. Apple is also rumored to unveil the low-cost iPhone with a plastic case at the same event.

Oh well. I can't afford to upgrade this time.

I said I'd save the money for my wedding.

I don't need a gold 128GB iPhone.

Watch me cave.:)

Can we at least see the gold or champagne color before complaining how ugly it is??

It's like the icons, some people dislike them, other like them. Some people will like the gold/champagne color, if there is one. If you like it, buy it, if not -- move along and stop the bitch'n.

iPhone 5S Gold = Douchebag iPhone

So you think you are qualified to judge people who might purchase a product that might not even exist, and that _you_ haven't even seen? So tell us, what does that make you?

The iPhone 4 / 4s is in my opinion the most beautiful phone on the market today. I'm sure Apple can beat that, and I'm sure they are going to try with the next release. The iPod Nano 5th gen looks beautiful in gold.

I'm more excited about a storage bump; if the base model is 32 GB, I'd jump on a 64 GB. A gold iPhone, though? Nah, I'm going to stick with the white one.

Can someone explain why lots of people seem to ask for this? Surely it doesn't matter what the base model is - if the base model is 16GB you can still buy a 32GB if that's what you want/need?

Perhaps because if Apple keeps the price points around where they have for previous models, then you'll pay roughly the same for a 32GB entry level 5S as you would have done for a 16GB 5.

Who wouldn't want more for their money?
