I've had this problem with my 5S prior to upgrading to IOS 9 on a couple of occasions.
I recently had this issue once on my 5s on IOS 8.1.4. I had my 5s since 2013 and that was the first time it siezed up.

This has happened to me multiple times since I got my phone:

1. My phone would randomly crash when it was on 9.0 out of the box. It would be in the middle of something and then "restart" going to the apple screen. When the phone came up it would have "searching" in the top left corner. It would not find a cell phone network until I did another reset.
2. Updated to 9.0.1. Phone turned itself off in my pocket. Tried to turn it back on and it got stuck in a boot loop. Restored the phone to factory settings. In that time, it would randomly shut off, but thankfully not be in a boot loop. Also, every time it shut itself off, it would not resync with my apple watch when I turned it back on.
3. Updated to 9.0.2. No boot loop yet, but same issues as 9.0.1

Not related since there are some A8, A7 and even A6 involved...

I was sure people would have thrown this ....

I'm sure it's more than likely a software issue. Thankfully I haven't encountered it personally but I'm hoping Apple determines the cause quickly and issues a patch for those affected. I do dislike the fact that the phones could potentially have one of two different processors. Hopefully there is no actual difference between the two.

I support 800+ iPads at work... we have been experiencing this issue for months now.

Users come in with an iPad they "can't turn on". They often indicate they left it plugged in over night but it wouldn't turn on. We perform a hard restart and it comes right on... and the battery is often largely discharged even though they indicate it was plugged in for charging all night long. A couple users per week.

This is definitely not just an iOS 9 or iPhone issue.

+1 Happened to me for the 1st time yesterday afternoon.

iPhone 6s 64GB Space Gray
iOS 9.0.2

Phone was in the back pocket of my cycling jersey while on a ride. It was connected to my Garmin Edge cycling computer via BlueTooth and was running the Garmin Connect App LiveTrack function. Screen was off and the phone otherwise was idle.

Home/Pwr Button reset required to restart it.

Happened to me for the first time late last night.
128GB iPhone 6s iOS 9.0.2.

It was just sitting on my desk doing nothing. Battery was around 35%.
Held the Power-Home combination to get it back.
Didn't notice the home button being warm.

I was hoping it was just a one-time glitch, but I guess not.

I have had this happen to my iPhone 6S about 3 or 4 times since getting it last Friday. It seems to happen about once every other day. Usually when it is just sitting, not doing anything, I pick it up and the screen is black and the phone is dead. Performing a hard boot brings it back. I am running iOS 9.1 beta 3.

I've had this happen three times this since getting my 6s. One possible data point: upon doing the reset most recently I noticed that the Mail app had consumed 30% of my battery that morning... so I'm wondering if that could be the culprit.

I did call apple support and they ran a diagnostic remotely and told me to do a reinstall of the OS... I was skeptical and decided to wait for another point release to see... and now I see this post.

This happened to me. However, mine would not turn back on. Even with a hard reboot. I held the buttons for at least 30 seconds. I connected it to my computer with iTunes, nothing. Went to Apple store, guy could not get it to turn on either, until, he connected it to iTunes. Then it finally came on. Why there, and, not for me, I don't know. He ran a diagnostics, found nothing. Still, he replaced the phone thinking it may be a hardware issue and may happen again. Just a thought, a few hours prior to this happening, I set one of the default live wallpapers as my background. Probably has nothing to do with it, but that was the only thing that I had changed before it happened. Anybody else have a live wallpaper set when this happened? Or, maybe it was just a software glitch that has been fixed with the most recent update. Was running iOS 9.1 beta 2 at the time.

I have had the same experience with my iPod Touch 6gen while I was on iOS8. Happened at least twice after normal use. Seemed to self correct. Hasn't happened since updating to iOS9.

Anybody experiencing sound issues? When Im listening to music and I get a notification, the sound goes down at least 3 times. Normally, it would lower the background music so you can hear the incoming notification sound. It does it but it does it 3 times and then all sounds to notifications are muted. Ill have to restart the phone again. Laggy? Delay in OS? Yes. Same issue with 9.0. same issue with 9.0.1. Same issue with 9.0.2. Might be a defect at this point. Kind of frustrating. Doesn't just do it with music either. Sometimes its out of thin air. Weird....I just don't get it.

Happened today to me for the first time - iPhone 6s Plus, 128GB, running IOS 9.0.2 First time since receiving the phone on launch day.

I have experienced this issue. I have an iPhone 6S 64GB AT&T Space Gray. I am running iOS 9.1 public beta 3. I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary (using Facebook app, Mail, Photos) and went to bed. About 430AM I woke up and plugged in my iPhone. Some time after that, it turned off and I overslept because the alarm didn't go off. I had to hold down the home and lock buttons to restart the phone. I haven't had the issue since.

Happened to me twice now after updating my iPhone 4S to iOS 9 and 9.0.1.

The phone was in standby-mode. Tried to turn it on via home button and power button but no response. Had to restart via 10 sec push of both home- and power button.

WOW - everyone is very quick to blame iOS, has anyone started looking at a specific app or apps, a developer may not have updated their apps to iOS 9 and could be causing memory leaks etc, is anyone capturing what apps people have that maybe running in the background, I have a 6s Plus 128gb and have no issues

I thought this and made sure all my apps were closed out and background refresh was turned off before charging. When I woke up the iPhone was unresponsive with black screen like every other morning.

This happened to my unlocked iPhone 5s like 4 days week ago. When I could restart it, it said something about "restored" or so.

I think this happened after unplugging an unauthorized third party charger ( I was charging via car whole listening to music) after turning the car off).

About 2 days later, the phone's touch screen was completely inactive (frozen) twice (a hard reset was necessary both times).

iOS Version 9.0 (13A344)

I have iOS 9.1 beta 3, i plugged my phone in last night before bed like i do every night. I woke up trying to check my phone and it was off and couldn't turn it on by just holding the power button. I had to hold the home and power button for 10+ seconds to get it to turn back on. First time this has happened to me since I got the new 6s.

Happened to me last night.

6S 64gb on 9.02

Tried to look at my phone in the middle of the night and screen didn't come on. Had to do a hard reset for it to turn on again.

No problems yet, but just ordered Alarm Clock at Amazon, simple version. Going to mail a bill to Apple, no jokes here. I like my iPhone, but if I'm late it can cost me a job.
