weren't people already being told of a shortage of the Plus model while they were still waiting in lines prior to release day?

Yes. But the fact that they have not replenished since then and the number of consistent reports of the 7+ models that make these creaking/cracking sounds points to something very wrong indeed. Lets hope Apple is working on this.

ForceTouch and now the non-mechanical home button demand solid build quality. Creaks and clicks...man that's poor design.
My 6S+ never creaked but to be fair I wasn't a big user of ForceTouch.

I stated this in an earlier post somewhere here at Mac Rumors. I said that the entire 7+ felt flimsy and didn't feel anywhere near as strong or rigid as the 6S+. I also stated that I'll bet Apple is NOT utilizing the series 7000 aluminum that they had to begin using in the iPhone 6 models due to their ability to bend so easily.

I also stated here a few times that tightening (or loosening) the screws slightly will NOT minimize or entirely stop the cracking/creaking of the 7+ body. Every single person that tried this approach said it worked then reported right back saying that in fact it did not resolve the issue.

You all heard it from me first....I can almost with certainty say that the shortage of iPhone 7+ models is due to the cracking and creaking issue.
I agree with you on this. I also have the same feeling that the 7 plus body is not as sturdy as that of the 6s plus. When I twist the 7 plus without too much force, I can notice the phone flexing a little. When I stop twisting, the phone went back to a normal state.

What makes the creaking noise is that the aluminium body of the 7plus is much more flexable than that of the 6s plus. When the body is flexed, the front glass or even some internal components will also be bent.

I think Apple did this on purose because of the fact is that phones are under some kind of pressure in daily use, such as putting the phone in tight pocket or accidentally lying on it. So, rather than making the aluminium body sturdy and hard, which is difficult to bend but once it is bent then it will not flex back, Apple made the aluminium body a bit more flexible but not soft so that the 7 plus can undergo some rough conditions. This reminds me of the LG G Flex

As a result, the overal weight of the 7 plus lighter than the 6s plus, eventhough the 7 plus comes with bigger battery, dual cameras, extra component for the new 3d touch home button, a new speaker at the earpice and bigger taptic engine. So many components were added but removing only the 3.5mm headphone jack, which means more weight for the phone. The only way to maintain, if not reduce, the weight of the phone as much as possible is to strip off some weight in the aluminium housing.

That's all what I think, but I still prefer the sturdy built of the 6s plus to the 7 plus.

Well put. Exactly what i guessed which make sense to me about weight reduction. I used to be a die hard andorid fan and 6 made me move to iphone with solid build quality. Now i am really disappointed on this one.

Mine seems to have gotten worse with time. It is currently clicking and creaking when applying as little pressure as it takes to type on the keyboard! At this point is completely unacceptable and I will be making a Genius Bar appointment for a couple weeks in the future in hope of a fresher batch of phones. Already submitted feedback to apple as well and I encourage anyone experiencing this to as well as it makes the phone feel awful to use from a tactility perspective.

The speculation on this forum presented as 'fact' never ceases to amaze.

"Almost with certainty"? Superb. Since your theory is completely made up and nonsensical, I'm intrigued as to what would make you 100% certain...

Mine creeks on the bottom left and all around the home button. Thought it was just me.

My wife's 7 plus rg plus doesn't make a peep. I'm waiting on a replacement.
Really? That gives me a little hope but I have had my 7+ replaced 4 times I'm on my 5th phone and they all have made the sound I've given up on getting a replacement. How much force have you used to try to reproduce the sound? In my experience it doesn't take much but each phone is a little different so if you've put decent force on it and it still doesn't make the sound you're golden and I'm jealous. :)

It doesnt take much effort, just by using 2 fingers I will be able to reproduce the sounds. It makes feel the metal housing is cheap and weak. I did check out at an Apple Store. Many of the 7plus clicks, some is louder than another. Only 1 phone that I find is perfect, which doesnt make any click but the power button is not...clicky and responsive. Overall, my thought is Apple's quality control sucks.

Apple should manufacture iphone in America to have better quality. Vote for Trump :))

I put a bit more force which isn't much, then I do with mine to make it click as I didn't want to damage anything.

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone else was having the same problem that I'm having. I have a 7 plus in black and everything about is perfect except whenever the phone is put under any amount of flex (from lifting it up or just holding it with two hands) the phone makes a slight creaking sound that sounds like something is loose (not a bending sound). The smallest amount of flex from everyday use causes the left side to make that sound which is quite audible. Another example is when I'm holding it with two hands, and press the top left and bottom right portions of the screen at the same time, it makes a slight click. Again, I'm not bending it or trying to bend it in any way. It's really annoying... I would love to exchange it for another one, but all of the apples stores within a 50 miles radius of me are completely out of stock.

Hey guy!!!

Today I played music on loud speakers for about 15 minutes, then I found that the clicking sound has been dramatically. It is not as loud as before but still there is some very subtle sound. Tomorrow, I will be playing music on loud speakers for a longer time, maybe as long as the battery will last, to get the speakers to be burn out. I think the clicking sound comes from the stereo speaker's membrane, which is still new.

Thank goodness for context! :D

I've noticed slight creaking but nothing major, and definitely not when using normal pressed on the screen. I hope the cracking is not a sign that the seal around the screen isn't set well.

My matte black 7+ (week 37) had this issue a little bit, not too annoying. My gold 7+ (week 40) I received because of issues with the black one now has ZERO cracking and creaking.

Anyone got any videos of this creaking/clicking sounds? Trying to gauge how to test my device...or maybe I shouldn't be looking for issues if I don't notice them!!

Here's a quick recording of me twisting the phone very gently from opposite corners. I'm twisting to induce the creaking but it is a solid representation of what I hear throughout the day. This was recorded with the same phone so the clicking sounds a bit more bassy like a blunt tapping sound but in real life it's more clicky like if you were tapping the phone screen with a pen.
