I've owned a 3GS, iP4, iP5, iP6.... skipping this one.

All the real nifty tech I read about on this site apparently is too futuristic. I'll be first in line for the iP8.

Normally I don't chime in on these types of threads but...what sort of things do you expect to be put into a new phone? Lets mention Samsung for example. For how long have galaxy phones all looked about the same? Yet Apple makes a similar design and all of your heads explode. It's going to be a great upgrade and a gorgeous phone like always, and you'll probably buy it too. It's no different than any other year.

Apple puts a lot of time and thought into making things work well, not just throwing stuff together quickly because people might want some new feature. I for one appreciate that because then my phone works without lag and a bunch of garbage eating my battery. If they gave you every single thing you wanted you'd have android.

Actually the latest poll shows ios crashing twice as much as android. So the just works argument is not valid anymore. I have both ios and Android and while each has its their own pros and cons, ios needs work.

I suppose an expansion of the iPhone upgrade programme is too much to ask for? Say one that doesn't start and end with US??

Honestly I get really tired of the hoops I have to jump through just to trade in my old phone and buy a new one. Bizarre that it hasn't been made available in UK.

Not really, as most UK iPhone owners allegedly go back to Android after owning their first iPhone.

I'm honestly a bit surprised at the outrage over the headphone jack. I guess I just assumed everyone had gone over to wireless headsets. Wireless headsets are infinitely better and the jack won't be missed.

There was no evidence flash was on the decline when Apple decided to give it a kick. To many people laughed at Apple. Many tech companies advertised their products with "and it have a flash" just like we surely will be seeing "and it comes with 3.5mm audio jack" adverts. Where is flash now?
I truly don't get this, just because it is widely used, it doesn't mean it will be here forever! In the technology field stuff do age pretty quickly and changes are rapid. I'm quite amazed that 3.5mm jack have been around for this long.

Thats not a valid comparison at all.

First, Flash is software. Even when Mac stopped shipping with it, users can still install it even today.

Second, Flash was never meant for mobile devices. Even when it was briefly supported by Android, it was terrible. It's not like flash ran and worked perfectly on iphone and apple pulled the rug out from under them. It was never a standard anything on mobile.

Third, even when Jobs penned the letter against Adobe, HMLT5, an open replacement standard, was already out and available.

Fourth, while not directly Flash, Adobe Flash Builder can compile apps for iOS and it's basically like running Flash apps.

Your argument presumes that there is some inherent progression of change that must occur. Just because something is old does not mean it is bad. 3.5mm jacks do everything they need to do perfectly and simply - unlike every other thing Apple has done away with, 3.5mm do not have a single inherent limitation that matters. #2 pencils are very old technology too, but they are still the standard writing instrument that grade-school children use. Old does not mean bad.

I am very open to seeing 3.5mm jacks replaced with something else, but replacing them just because of age is stupid. If there was a worthwhile replacement, something that offered an actual improvement but was just as open, sure, go for it.

But that's not going to happen. At this point, Apple has a better shot at unifying all the power plugs in the world than actually changing the 3.5mm standard. All they will do is add unnecessary complexity and cost where none is needed. Look forward to lots of sarcastic "it just works" posts concerning lightning headphones.

I had that too, but with all my cables (both lighting and audio jack was flaky). I though my phone was dying. I tried everything (reset, reinstall, new cable) to fix it. Then I found a website saying it is lint in the back of the connectors, use a toothpick and dig it out and holy **** there was a ton of lint coming out. After the procedure, everything worked fine again.

Thank you for the info. I'll check for any impurities at the connectors extra diligently if I encounter the same issue again. For now all is fine. As I treat and carry both my phones the same way, I suspect the issue in my case was the cable quality :)

P.S. Just used a toothpick to dig the Ligtning ports of both my phones, no lint or dirt accumulated. May be because I'm carrying them in the leather wallets on my belt, not in the pockets.

I guarantee you all when apple switches to oled the first responses will be "omg how gorgeous is that screen"
We're in the middle of a smartphone war, and you're behind enemy lines.

I bet that during WWII there were many patriotic Americans who loved bratwust and sauerkraut, but I'm certain none of them were shouting it from the rooftops.

Not really. It'll be a better camera...

It's not always best to rush things to market (cough) Samsung (cough).
It's only the battery and you've to take credit that Samsung is taking their full responsibility. Apple is still in denial about the touch gate which is plaguing lots of 6.

Thank you so much for clearing that up, I did not know Apple is allowed to make these kinds of decisions.

Since my posts on this subject consistently receive more likes that other posts on the same subject, I was lulled into a false sense of feeling vindicated, but then as a 5-year old, I am allowed some slack in my opinions.

Ah yes ... Internet Likes. The true currency of the modern world.

Correct. Might want to mention the wheel too. It may be the oldest recognized technology.

Or maybe "humans". We've been around longer than any technology we've invented. Perhaps the old, antiquated human race should be deprecated just because it's old?

And one more time: both the battery and camera technologies within iPhones are OLDER than the 3.5mm jack. After Apple gets away with jettisoning 3.5mm but keeping the price the same (or maybe raising it) and the cheerleaders are singing "See, apparently millions and millions of people didn't care about the headphone jack", I hope they'll be back again spinning the same rationalizations when Apple decides to see if they can kick the battery & camera out to accessory add-ons too (sold separately of course).

Both are older, more "antiquated" technologies that could be done better if they were pushed out to more expensive add-on hardware. In fact, the bulk of the arguments in support of jettisoning 3.5mm could be repurposed for jettisoning either or both of those older technologies with only a minor wording change.

Maybe this is just marketing spin practice for our progression toward eventually buying an empty box from Apple for about $1000 and then buying all the individual parts to assemble what used to be a "whole" iPhone delivered within prior generation boxes?;)

But hey, iPhone cannot get any "thinner" or "lighter" than the one (not) in an empty box. And Apple cannot make more profit than having near zero cost of shipping an empty box. And, of course, some of us will spin the genius of it going that way... how brilliant it is that now those that want more battery can simply buy more battery and those that want smaller screens can now buy a smaller screen, etc. Genius. Genius!

Completely agree with you, but I will never say that Wireless is better because people will explain to you all the reasons the quality is better with wired. I agree with you because Wireless is the only way to go. If you buy great Bluetooth headphones (I have 4 different Bose) - they come with an optional 3.5mm wired connection as well. Bluetooth is just better than wired for all the reasons besides quality. I can't tell the difference so it doesn't matter. Wired gets in the way, wired is SO yesterday. Reminds me of a business book called "Who moved my cheese"... people always whining about change and saying why the old way is better, superior, "the way it has been foreever", stupid to change, etc. While the rest of us accept change because there is better things to do than whine daily.

Imagine for a moment the Galaxy 7 edge wasn't a Samsung phone but an Apple phone with the :apple: on it.
I'll bet we would see huge lines in front of the Apple stores.

I'll bet those same people who criticize about oled are flabbergasted by the screen and camera. For me it isn't important if a phone starts apps a tenth of a second faster then the other. Fast is fast these days. You'll be using the screen the most, so that should be top in a premium priced phone, like the rest of the components.

Back to reality... Same old, same old. Yawn.

My daughter has the S7 Edge as her private phone and the iPhone 6s as her works phone and honestly the 6s is like the poor relation we don't talk about. The Edge is a thing of real beauty both in looks and performance.

It looks as though her employers may be relenting though as her boss has just got the S7 Edge and has been blown away by it so is now looking at changing everyone over.

I can't predict the future, but let's look at the past for guidance. 5/10 years ago, I had fewer 3.5mm ports in my living room. Seems the standard is growing...
Perhaps you are collecting these ports? Soon you could have hundreds ;-)

If you posting from the shower, presumably from an electronic device, you should see at least one 3.5mm port, unless you have one of the few smartphones without one. In my shower, the shower radio also has a 3.5mm port (not that I have ever used it)
I answered this earlier, yes I am posting from the shower but of course not from a device. I dictate these words, and the ether picks them up.

What if your DAC sucks compared to the one Cirrus Logic, Apple (or whoever Apple is/was using for the DAC in your idevice? You get "lower quality" sound even though the output, from the idevice, is digital.

Presumably you won't be dumb enough to buy a set of new digitally equipped headphones that sound worse with your new iPhone, than your old headphones did with your old iPhone.

you think they will talk about macbooks this event?

Yes. I think at a minimum they may update the MBA as rumored, since it is likely their biggest selling entry level consumer laptop. And they'll do it primarily to add a Lightning port and new wireless audio tech, so they can signal to developers their intent to make all Apple products compatible with their new audio standards. They may possibly update the iMac as well. Or they may wait until October which is only a month away for all of it. But I think there will be a lot to be gained by deflecting the narrative about needing an adapter just to use your headphones between your iPhone and Mac, or not being able to use your BT 5 AirPods with your Mac.

Yes, research shows most people can see differences up to about 500 ppi, with a few studies suggesting even higher.

In normal use, no way. If you put the screen right in front of your eyeballs, just to prove a point, then yes.

I love the fact that Apple does not sacrifice battery life or performance for silly high dpi numbers that only matter on a spec sheet.

If you actually believe this, you should be in the group wishing the replacement for 3.5mm would be USB3 instead of Lightning. USB3 will fully cover the same base AND put far more "multi" in multipurpose utility. Lighting will have it's "multi" capped at a range of utility chosen by Apple.
I would prefer USB3 over lightning, but I'm actually in the group that wants wireless everything (audio, data, and power). Then the Lightning port can be closed up as well. If that's Apple's aim, then it wouldn't make sense to switch to USB3 on iOS devices for a couple of years and then get rid of it.

There have been numerous articles posted over the past few months talking about the rumor of Apple removing the 3.5mm jack. If you look back at those articles, the numbers of responses are astounding and the vast majority of responses are from people furious about the potential (probably imminent) 3.5mm jack removal.

The 3.5mm jack is a universal standard across laptops, automobiles, desktops, music players, stereos, mobile phones, tablets, even in-seat audio jacks on most passenger airlines. Removing this standard is a complete slap in the face to millions of consumers who have spent a lot of money on high quality headphones, earbuds, speakers, etc. that all use the 3.5mm standard.

I know people love to compare removing the 3.5mm jack to eliminating the old floppy or CD, but those were upgrades to new standards embraced by the entire computer industry as a move forward in technology and convenience.

If removed, Apple will have taken away a reliable open standard, replacing it with their proprietary standard, and I'm confident virtually no other equipment manufacture will ever embrace Lightning (I'm not talking about headset/earbud manufactures, I'm talking about other desktop, laptop, tablet, stereo, phone, automobile, music player, and aircraft manufactures). You are never going to see widespread acceptance of Lightning on other devices.

With this potential bonehead decision Apple does not move us forward, they lock us into a standard they control/own and move us away from the mainstream into a segregated solution that is not even available on Apple’s own computer line ... which coincidently uses the 3.5mm audio jack.

So what might Apple give us in return, maybe they shave a faction of a millimeter (bid deal) from the phone's thickness, and/or maybe we get a second (or better) speaker because they want us to believe we need some kind of so-called “stereo sound”. It’s pathetic!

Give us back the 3.5mm jack and keep your second/improved speaker. We don’t need a so-called stereo in our pockets.

The 3.5mm jack is based on the 1/4 inch jack which was invented in 1878. How long do we have to keep using this? How is it a slap in the face if they include the adapter?

And then you have to keep in mind that the Galaxy s7 edges is even cheaper over here then the iPhone 6s. No wonder why the iPhone 6 is a hard sell here. I had high hopes on the iPhone 7 but don't think it will be a hot seller. Too skip and wait for the iPhone 8, feels like a donkey running after a carrot. I can only imagine what the competition will bring to market. iPhone 7 will be too expensive, too little and too late.
