My daughter has the S7 Edge as her private phone and the iPhone 6s as her works phone and honestly the 6s is like the poor relation we don't talk about. The Edge is a thing of real beauty both in looks and performance.

It looks as though her employers may be relenting though as her boss has just got the S7 Edge and has been blown away by it so is now looking at changing everyone over.
Our company of almost 300,000 employees are not allowed to use any Samsung/Android product while Apple Products are on the approved list. Reason "known malware risks, bloatware, poor performance"

I can't expect Apple to give a strong iPhone 7. It would take a herculean effort for them to catch up to what my current phone offers. Speed isn't everything. I do want to be pleasantly surprised with the iPhone 7 though.

Imagine for a moment the Galaxy 7 edge wasn't a Samsung phone but an Apple phone with the :apple: on it.
I'll bet we would see huge lines in front of the Apple stores.

I'll bet those same people who criticize about oled are flabbergasted by the screen and camera. For me it isn't important if a phone starts apps a tenth of a second faster then the other. Fast is fast these days. You'll be using the screen the most, so that should be top in a premium priced phone, like the rest of the components.

Back to reality... Same old, same old. Yawn.

Well..... you are PARTIALLY right.
Apple was built by Steve to be a consumer electronics company that focuses on beauty, style, classiness, user experience, svelteness, etc.
There is enough of a following now that even if they did decide to instead make lame overhyped untested garbage with "features" that only matter on a spec sheet, loaded it up with four times more ram, and still had it be half the speed, let privacy go out the window, put effort into their phones doing janky "eye scrolling" & being remote controls for a dead technology like television, etc. as you suggest- you are correct.... it WOULD be embraced by some faithful for a gen or two.
But those a teeny bit more woke would speak up... & if nothing changed (as nature abhors a vacuum), a premium handset manufacturer would indeed take their place.

Doesn't have to be (your definition of) "innovative". I mean; nobody else is. So who cares. You don't have to be faster than the bear; you just have to be faster than the other guy. Apple has that in spades.

But here; just for you; a photo of the tremendous innovative changes from the last Galaxy to the latest and greatest: :D:D:D:pView attachment 648247
Amaaaaaaazing!

I agree, the OLED screen on that Samsung is amazing. Hard to improve much on that.

How is the sound quality? I have a 2014 Honda to which I can connect my audio over two ways: via Bluetooth or over the car's built in Lightning port (with pre-CarPlay interoperability). I can most definitely notice that the Lightning connection has a fuller sound and the bass response is better. If I could be assure the frequency response and sound quality was the same for wireless headphones as with wired, I would certainly go with wireless.
You bring up a good point. My old car only had bluetooth as the connection mode and although it was fine and better than using an unused FM frequency, I didn't know what I was missing until I bought a brand new car recently and it had Apple Car Play and used the lightning/usb connection. Much much better. My Bose QC35's or On-Ear Bluetooth sound incredible with the iPhone or my TV. Incredible... way better than trying to use wired headphones with a long 20 foot cable lol

I would prefer USB3 over lightning, but I'm actually in the group that wants wireless everything (audio, data, and power). Then the Lightning port can be closed up as well. If that's Apple's aim, then it wouldn't make sense to switch to USB3 on iOS devices for a couple of years and then get rid of it.

No what would make sense is to perfect wireless, make the perfection of the standard so good that it becomes as ubiquitous as 3.5mm and then deprecate the wired connections.

I agree that if wireless was as good as wired and as ubiquitous as 3.5mm, I'd join that chorus even with the hassle of worrying about another thing to charge. But, in my own experience, wireless is far from as ubiquitous so embracing it now just means being locked out of common opportunities to jack in and hear some audio from something other than Apple and Apple-like technologies.

For example, I travel a lot. When flying, I may indeed be fine listening to something only on my Apple hardware. However, there are times when I might want to jack into live television or watch the in-flight movie. I have not yet flown any major airline with Bluetooth connectivity. There may be 1+ but I have not yet flown it. Instead, the common choices are 3.5mm and USB. Passengers better be able to plug into those OR they 1) do without, 2) have to buy those crappy "temp" headphones sold by the airlines or 3) better have some kind of adapter or wire in the bag.

I can't believe anyone with any real objectively could argue that the airlines will quickly license Lightning from Apple and then quickly install it as a third option on all of their planes. If anything, the traditional USB jack is likely to become a USB3 jack eventually (meaning many years from now).

So for me to embrace "the future" now means doing without or having to carry along adapter(s) vs. a "the present" where one good set of headphones just readily connects with everything I encounter- no adapters required, no sacrifices to quality, nothing else to charge, no additional things to buy, etc. When "the future" is at least as good as "the present," count me in. Until then, I just can't love this move... Apple-led or not.

I guess this is a silly question :)

But why did they not just use the long standard 2.5mm audio jack instead?
Instantly save 1mm and still be compatible with everything.

Why did they stick to 3.5 for so long when 2.5 has been out for years and years and years?

I can't expect Apple to give a strong iPhone 7. It would take a herculean effort for them to catch up to what my current phone offers. Speed isn't everything. I do want to be pleasantly surprised with the iPhone 7 though.
Doesn't it depend on what you expect from a phone and how well the phone performs in your eyes? Every year, I think, when will the competition catch up.

surprised by the amount of folks that have never charged their phones and listened to music via headphone jack at the same time

Correct. Might want to mention the wheel too. It may be the oldest recognized technology.

Or maybe "humans". We've been around longer than any technology we've invented. Perhaps the old, antiquated human race should be deprecated just because it's old?

And one more time: both the battery and camera technologies within iPhones are OLDER than the 3.5mm jack. After Apple gets away with jettisoning 3.5mm but keeping the price the same (or maybe raising it) and the cheerleaders are singing "See, apparently millions and millions of people didn't care about the headphone jack", I hope they'll be back again spinning the same rationalizations when Apple decides to see if they can kick the battery & camera out to accessory add-ons too (sold separately of course).

Both are older, more "antiquated" technologies that could be done better if they were pushed out to more expensive add-on hardware. In fact, the bulk of the arguments in support of jettisoning 3.5mm could be repurposed for jettisoning either or both of those older technologies with only a minor wording change.

Maybe this is just marketing spin practice for our progression toward eventually buying an empty box from Apple for about $1000 and then buying all the individual parts to assemble what used to be a "whole" iPhone delivered within prior generation boxes?;)

But hey, iPhone cannot get any "thinner" or "lighter" than the one (not) in an empty box. And Apple cannot make more profit than having near zero cost of shipping an empty box. And, of course, some of us will spin the genius of it going that way... how brilliant it is that now those that want more battery can simply buy more battery and those that want smaller screens can now buy a smaller screen, etc. Genius. Genius!

Neither of those are standards of any kind. Whether the battery in my iphone is lithium or cadium, doesn't affect what other devices it can interact with.

Really though there's not much of a choice if you want the most current iphone no matter how this makes you feel.
You've summed it up quite nicely.

Apple has a death grip on the Devotees, it is a very impressive display of dominance. Deftly manipulating their minds with months of carefully leaked "rumors" Apple does what no other consumer electronics company can, they whip buyers into a frenzy ready to purchase anything that Apple puts in front of them.

Witness the extreme responses often seen here:
"Just Take My Money"
"My Body Is Ready"
And on and on.

It's a fascinating look at how Apple has convinced millions that the Cupertino Company knows what is best for them.

There was no evidence flash was on the decline when Apple decided to give it a kick. To many people laughed at Apple. Many tech companies advertised their products with "and it have a flash" just like we surely will be seeing "and it comes with 3.5mm audio jack" adverts. Where is flash now?
I truly don't get this, just because it is widely used, it doesn't mean it will be here forever! In the technology field stuff do age pretty quickly and changes are rapid. I'm quite amazed that 3.5mm jack have been around for this long.

It might be surprise to you. There are still tons of website still use flash.

You guys keep ignoring the fact that Apple is trying to replacing a standard port to non-standard ports.

You guys keep motioning about flash and CD, but you guys forgot that flash is being replaced by STANDARD HTLM5 and CD is replaced by streaming.

Now imaging Apple trying to replace flash with Apple standard. Nobody will give f about Apple.

Yes, if it ran iOS and had a a9 or a10 soc, and it was a little more subtle in bezel color, I would definitely buy one.

But it doesn' t have these things. So I won' t

This is already happening here in the Netherlands and I believe is happening in China as well. People wake up and want bang for their bucks. Even in the USA I believe the Galaxy s7 edge is outselling the iPhone 6s. Over here Aplle is slowly losing its cool and the youngsters of today won't buy them like they used to do. Only a matter of time now.

They may have the best marketing ever created and your summary is all too true. You have to admit, when they came out with their MacBook's unibody enclosure from a single block of aluminum it changed the way people thought of laptops. It made laptops thinner, stronger and more robust and definitely the best looking laptops still today. Now, all you see is other companies trying to make laptops thinner than the macbook's. Every comparison that any company makes is to Apple.

It appears that regardless of all the other improvements/changes coming to the iPhone 7, 95% of the posts here are perseverating on the loss of the 3.5 port. The same percentage that complained when Apple dropped the 5.4" floppy from the Apple I's and again at the 3.5" floppy... and further still when they stopped making portables with CD/DVD drives...

The 3.5 port is the oldest "technology" still in use in our modern smartphones, not because it's the best, but because it's cheap and safe. Hard to believe we have a "Star Trek" device that is using technology from the Model T era...

I've got too many pairs of wired headphones to be proud... But I own 2 pairs of BT headphones, 1 over the ear and 1 ear buds... lately, when I go to grab a pair, inevitably, it's the BT headphones... I like the convenience of not having wires streaming down my chest or getting caught on things - especially when doing yard work or mowing the lawn or working out. The battery life is an issue for me... but then it occurred to me, when was the last time I listened to anything with headphones for more than 10 hours straight? Never.

This too will pass... Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.

Yep and they leapfrogged Apple in thinnes, performance and price while Apple stood still counting profits.

Summed it up as if you were me. I have way too many wired headphones and they are all gathering dust. I now have three sets of bluetooth headphones/ear buds and they are all I use. Like dedicated Apple users, there are dedicated music users that want the wired. My Bluetooth from Bose has an optional wired if I want to use it... never will. Wires get in the way and now Bluetooth outsells wired. That gap will get bigger and bigger. People don't like change so they whine and whine but future doesn't stop moving. Instead of whining, don't upgrade to the new iPhone or switch to Samsung - it is as simple as that but too easy. It's more "fun" to go to a dedicated Apple website and whine and whine and whine.

Because beauty means a lot when you're choosing a platform to run ur business. iPhones are hands down the better phone for large businesses.

And there we go again. People that buy iPhones or other Apple products have to be hypnotized, stupid and ignorant.
Ever considered the possibility that Apple releases quite good products that people want to enjoy?

As an Apple Shareholder, I am very thankful of their profits and superior build and quality still today :) and everyone is fine to keep topping them on thinness and price because they run Windows or Linux. No thanks... Apple just makes superior quality products and by far the best eco-system which means the most to businesses and educated individuals who do not want to spend all day troubleshooting and rebooting.

The new feature list just shows how far behind Apple has slipped. I knew it would be downhill after Steve but didn't think it would happen this fast. Please prove me wrong Apple.

Nope, that would be battery and camera. Perhaps they can become accessory add-ons in the next iPhone(s)... sold separately too? The very same "antiquated" arguments could be applied to battery and/or camera with only minor wording changes. Are we going to do that should Apple feel emboldened to see if they can kick those out too. You may think that's a joke but the camera "wart" will only clash more and more with "thinner." And nothing will "thinner" a future iPhone faster than getting rid of the thing that makes up most of it's "fat" inside now.

Of course, we won't bash Apple for still using those even older technologies in this iPhone rather than boldly jettisoning those to spur on "the future" because those will still be built INSIDE of this next iPhone. Our only "antiquated" spin is associated with the one thing we pretty much know is getting jettisoned... and then all this is only spun here- with this one Apple product- because it's the only one that will be without a 3.5mm jack. None of us are over in Mac, iPad or iPod threads ripping into Apple for continuing to sell those products with the antiquated, outdated, inconvenient, "wires cause cancer", "I tripped over a headphone wire and fell down 2, no 20 no 200, no 2000 flights of stairs... yeah, that's the ticket", etc.

Instead, here- with just the one thing- 3.5mm is almost at "abomination" status. But do keep buying all those other Apple products that still have it because it's fine over there... until Apple gets rid of it there too.
