the reason they are removing the jack is simple. It allows them to force people into using a proprietary plug which allows them to charge a licensing fee which makes beats headphones more price competitive and they are hoping to sell more of them. They will include a dongle to satisfy customers but in the end people will lose their dongles or forget them enough times and just say screw it and buy new headphones which Apple will be able to cash in on
That's how they get you.

Q1: Lets assume lightning headphones are provided:

To use my existing headphones in the iphone 7 - I need an adaptor. Hopefully free, otherwise at least 20-30 bucks.

I cannot use my new bundled iphone 7 headphones with my ipad pro or older iphones? Also cannot use it with my macbook 12 - so another adaptor required. Another 20--30 bucks.

WOW!
Why would you not be able to use the Lightning headphones on other devices with Lightning ports?

Q2: Also, how come apple don't remove lightning completely, and use usb-c on their ios devices?
While it seems that USB-C is becoming a very widely used standard (not least because USB got smart enough that is doesn't need cables with two different plugs at each end to ensure you connected only devices that could communicate with each other), USB plugs used in phones have changed many times over the last 15 years: from USB Mini over USB Micro to now USB-C to name only the most common ones. On top of that many companies used their own variants (Sony and Panasonic come to mind).

Where the USB-C standard stands out compared to earlier USB versions is that (as mentioned above) it uses the same plug on the computer end. Since ports on computers tend to have a longer life than ports on peripherals or other devices, USB-C is likely to last longer based on this alone. Moreover, USB-C got smarter in that it can charge in either direction (eg, a computer can be charged via its USB-C port and can charger other devices via the same USB-C port), and it can include other protocols from analog audio to video signals.

For anyone that's been waiting a few years, I guess this sounds like a good upgrade. Pretty tame for Apple, though that's their MO lately. This will be the very first time I haven't gotten the new iPhone - just no good reason to this time around. Neither was the last one.

Because we can? But on a less snooty response, people like to have the latest and greatest. If they're able to have it, why not? Some people run businesses and their entire lives on their phones (I personally know 2 people who run their business from their phones 90% of the time) so why not make sure you have the most powerful device to be as efficient and able as possible.
This is why a lot of Americans are in debt. Everyone that "liked" this comment, how many of you have everything paid off? Like my 1.6 million home, 20 watches each costing $20,000 and up, just brought 2 BMW last month paid off. Yes I really could buy that $50,000,000 latest yacht but it's stupid cus i already got 1 already, yes it's 5 years old but it's paid off. I feel so bad for everyone just showing off that they can buy this phone but yet it's through monthly payments through your carrier. And yes the yacht cost more than the house but who cares. It's all paid off. Do I go show off and say, because we can. Only little kids do this.

I cracked it. They remove 3.5 mm jack just to add it back in 2017 year iPhone and boost sales.

Tim on stage: By popular demand...
I get it now by Steve Jobs going thermo nuclear on Android now by removing the Jack. So evolutionary. Lol

The 56K modem had a "truly" successor -> DSL, maybe you don't use the Ethernet port anymore, but look around in companies, even the latest iMacs and the Mac mini are equipped with this port.
I'd say on computers, Ethernet is the successor to the 56K modem port. And haven't used an Ethernet port in the office in five years on my laptop. Things are different for desktops, they stay in place and it thus doesn't matter much how many cables they are connected to. For stationary devices the same will be true for audio connections.

Because they shifted to other universal standards, not Apple Internet and Apple Wifi.
Is Bluetooth an Apple standard?

Will get it cheaper next year when the iPhone 8 launches. Sure, its a want I would love to have, but not one I need to have especially after spending nearly a thousand dollars on the 6s.
I agree. Getting the latest and greatest is a want not a need. Would I die if I don't get the latest? Prolly not and prolly not if I keep this same phone for 4 years. Lol

I imagine it will use the proximity sensor to disable speaker mode when too close. I hope so anyway!
Yeah i assume they will, let's just hope it doesn't malfunction because that could get painful ;)

Airpods maybe?

I've already got bluetooth headphones for the gym and theyre a pain remebering to charge them once a week. Maybe if theres no cables to plug in could have a stand on my desk and just a case of putting them onto the stand at night to charge.

Water resistant is going to be pretty dope. Cue all the YouTube swimming videos, and complaints from people who took it below one meter under water and break their phones, then sue.

Not enough to upgrade from Iphone 6 either if you ask me
Also not enough from 4s either. Haha
[doublepost=1473081995][/doublepost]
Exactly - anyone with 4/5/6 will be very happy with this upgrade - since a new case its what constitutes a new phone in this forum, folks will claim this is not a solid upgrade.

While I can afford it, I am skipping it - the lost of the head jack its not a feature to me.
Actually even from a 4s and still find no reason to upgrade...just my own opinion.

It does happen to me in occasions. My iPhone 6 is two years old and I have just had a new battery fitted.

On a separate note if anyone reading this takes their phone for repair and the person rubs the palm of their hand on the screen and hands it back to you.
Do not key in passcode. If you do wipe the screen before handing it back or better still walk out the shop.

What does this refer to?

Same here. I've just taken out a new 12 month SIM only contract on my iPhone 6 instead of getting a new one.

Not convenient, but I am sure there will be third party splitters and stands available to allow both.
In some cases the stands and splitters are MORE convenient. For those who use the 3.5mm jack to play audio in their car, but want to charge at the same time, a splitter with audio out and a passthrough lightning port means each time you get into or out of your car you only have to unplug one thing instead of two. A stand on the desk or bedside table also might be more convenient than a loose cable.

I guess iconic pics like this will be dead now.

What's the benefit of removing it? The chassis will be the same, so they could've fit a 3.5mm jack, and there are other waterproof phones out there with a headphone port.

Tell me 1 reason why removing a feature is a benefit.

Nuff Said.

To generate interest in wireless headphones and boost adoption of them.

Sometimes, the best way to predict the future is to invent it, and that seems to be precisely what Apple is doing - taking an active hand in shaping the way we consumers listen to our music.

Unless the iPhone 7 Plus offers a better camera than the S7, a higher resolution screen than the 6S Plus, 3 or more gigs of RAM, solid water resistance, and a bunch of new iOS 10 features, I don't think the asking price is going to be in my best interest.

And why do people need to upgrade their phone every year?
They don't! I think I will be on a 3 to 4 year cycle. Some folks view paying a monthly installment for the latest is like a car payment that you always have to satiate their desires for something they perceive to be sleek and awesome. For others the reality is settling in that small, incremental changes do not warrant a purchase every year. I think that is contributing to the decline of sales in mature markets. That is why Apple has their "iPhone Upgrade" program, to entice folks to get a new phone each year.
My iPhone 6 still works great so why change? My only incentive to change is not the technology or features but to get the larger screen of a Plus. Plus, I am unlikely to buy the iPhone 8 next year until whatever "clusterf-gate" issues are solved with a new product. (The same reason I won't immediately buy a new MacBook Pro this year when they released-something is always fubar).

I bought an SE last week. Not sure if I could do without the headphone jack. Also tired of carrying large phones. Am so happy with my smaller phone...Small is Beautiful!
