Its not a cop out, as a consumer I find the phone to be ho hum, especially compared to the the prior generation. Apple is charging premium prices and yet have not offered major features for some time. As a consumer I'm voicing my opinion (and voting with my wallet).
The pricing IS a bummer.

The 8 is a ho-humm update, especially for those on a 6s and up.

Lack of any wow features, is also a major factor - wireless charging has been around for so long, there's a long established standard, so Apple isn't really blazing any trails with the 8 compared to other competitors.
I think this comment misses the point. For those who don’t want to beta test FaceID or care about an edge-to-edge screen (my phone-holding fingertips are fine with bezels) the iPhone 8 brings a successful design up to speed regardless of inductive charging. It has the exact same processor as the X and runs iOS 11 like lightning, has an outstanding TrueTone display, films 4K video, and has the best mobile camera period according to DxO. The glass-on-aluminum design is gorgeous and rigid. This isn’t supposed to blaze any trails. Leave that to the X, if Apple can make enough of them. What non-bezel-free trailblazing competitor are you thinking of? The 8 is what a standard iPhone should be, and I’m loving mine. (The only problem with the lineup is why they still have the 6s or, arguably, even the 7. Kill the 6s and put the A10 processor in the SE.)

Edit: Forgot also to mention fast charging. It’s fantastic, especially in a pinch. I just took my 8 from 1% to 56% in 27 minutes. No other iPhone can do that right now.

I wouldn't necessarily say it is "because" of customers waiting for the iPhone X. I'm a 7+ and going to wait for next year's "X" device.

That's one of my points. I can get an iPhone 7 brand new for a lot less then the 8. Don't get me wrong, I think the all glass back is beautiful, but since I'm the type of person to put a case on the phone, there's little advantage - at least for me.

The interesting metric is the slower adoption of iOS11. Could it reflect that the 32bit app issue is having an impact?

Tbh, I'm unaware of the prior adoption rate, so I can't offer an opinion. I know for my usage, I wasn't impacted that much but then my needs are probably a lot more humble then others.

I think Apple really screwed this launch up.
People with recent iPhone see no reason to upgrade to the 8, and the hype of the iPhone X will die down drastically. The 1k price isn’t helping either.

Would I get this phone or wait for next year to see if it brings back Touch ID under the display?

I don’t feel like fighting with the rest over what will likely be limited supplies of the iPhone X.
The X definitely has features that are more exciting, but the price point is such that I'm probably going to hold off, especially since we've been hearing about how constrained the inventories will be.

For my usage, I'm not sure I can justify 1,000 and up for a phone, but that's just me.

I’d rather get the 8 if I could. It looks decent compared to the last three iterations. As for the X, I’ll take a chin over that horrid notch.
decent is not something worth so much money.
"Yea, I married her she's pretty decent" said nobody

Other than the Galaxy Note which has pen support what major new feature do other phones have that iPhone 8 doesn’t? I’m talking about a significant “wow” feature (not design) that would make the 8 not ho-hum. What is it?

The X factory must be going bonkers trying to make phones.

I want the X but the price is nuts, so I'll grab a cheap 7 Plus and let it mature.

Nope, Apple has asked suppliers to slow down parts delivery. Suppliers are only supplying about 40% of originally planned components.

Sure it’ll sell out, but NOT because Apple can’t make these devices fast enough.

Actually when you do a product comparison between the 8 Plus and the X besides the OLED display the only feature differences seem to be camera related. Other than that the phones are nearly identical.

Not interested in the iPhone 8. It is a glorified iPhone 7S. It will feel outdated come November 3rd.

If this graph shows a % of total iPhones in the US, well, selling the same number of iPhones as last year will result in a lower % as there are still new people getting on the iPhone, i.e. the total number of iPhone users goes up. Why don't they give absolute numbers?

Also I'm quite sure that some apps tracked are 32 bit only indeed.

Finally, the main takeaway of the chart is that the more expensive 8+ sells more than the 4.7". First year that it happens. That bodes well, indeed, for the X! Meaning people are ready to spend more money for the iPhone this year.

This comes at no one's surprise, tbh and this topic haas been done to death; there's really nothing more to say.
