Of course no-one wants a phone that's going to be considered dated in 2 months.

Not that I'll be buying the ugly X phone either though.

This exactly for me - I have sufficient disposable income to buy the iPhone X:

1. If I didn't consider it so ugly compared to *all* the previous models (the screen bump is a huge aesthetic flaw)
2. If I didn't consider the 1400 USD that it costs here including sales tax to be very poor value for money for a phone, compared to a laptop - especially as it won't provide that much more utility compared to my existing phone, it won't make me more productive (probably the opposite).

I think that this will be the worst year wrt iPhones in a while...

Apple is obviously not "doomed", but the luster is starting to wear thin, they've meeting resistance to a number of their directions (Touchbar, USB-C, Trashcan non-expandanable Mac Pro). I think the iMac pro is also a meh choice - what pro wants to tie their screen to a computer - especially considering the retina image-retention issues.

We'll have to wait for December 31 or even March 31 sales to determine if people are really waiting for the X. There is certainly a built-in market for some quantity of a $1,000 phone that looks just like a $725 Galaxy S8. The question is how many? Only when supply constraints are eliminated will we have a true picture of how well the X will sell.

Personally I think it is just as likely that a sizable number of iPhone users will simply say "the 8 isn't enough of an upgrade over what I've already got and I'm not spending $1,000 on a phone. I'll keep on using what I've already got."

Apple needs to sell more than 250 million phones on an annual basis to recover from the stagnation it has experienced since the release of the iPhone 6. I don't think it is going to happen and ultimately we'll see a year-over-year decline in units sold for at least FY 2017 and probably FY 2018 as well.

Gonna be a lot of disappointed people when the X sells out in 3 seconds, and will continue to be sold out through Christmas.

I am not buying that limited supply marketing gimmick.

If you look at the roll out of new iPhone's across the world, they are usually staggered over several months primarily to address supply/demand issues. However, for the Iphone X it is being rolled out the same day across several countries.

I am sure Apple started to build X's at the same time as 8 and 8 plus but deliberately holding it out to prevent cannibalizing the 8/8 Plus sales. Highly doubt the X will sell out quickly and we have to wait for months like air-pods.

It's hard to believe that the 7 Plus was only 0.2% after 1st weekend. I remember the 7 Plus being a huge demand phone, with the Jet Black color being in super-demand. Is the figure low because there was a shortage of 7 Plus phones at first? I didn't get my 7 Plus until about 3 weeks after release day due to demand (even though I ordered within hours of midnight, and was expected to be delivered on release day, the demand caught BB by surprise and they didn't get their shipments and 7 Plus was highly constrained).

Seems to me the 7 Plus had the largest demand, not the lowest.

The weird buzzing noise that's being reported coming from inside the iPhone 8 won't help sales either!

I'm sure same would happen (to lesser extent) even if there was no iPhone X.

There is NOTHING to get excited about with iPhone 8,it's a very outdated 4 years old design..when you got phones like Galaxy S8..in design department they simply KILL ancient giant bezel design of iPhone 8.

Honestly I felt stupid buying my iPhone 7 Plus few months ago since it already looked SO dated and outdate compared to high tech phones like S8 Plus..it is just my preference of iOS and the fact that I hate Android OS and have a Mac and Watch that led to buying iPhone again.and now there is iPhone 8 same thing!

no one wants that s***.lol and Apple has hiked the price also.they were over confident it seemed, and now iPhone 8 flopped.

iPhone X is there and will sell, but I'm concerned about the future iPhones, will there be 2 versions again? if not what will happen to pricing? $1000 become the norm?

I'm pretty sure that if they'd added a few colors to this phone, people would think it was exciting, even with the bezels.

It's funny what people consider to be an upgrade, because the wireless charging, camera update, and speed bump are enough reasons for people on the 6, 6s to upgrade to the 8. But, people think of "innovation" as "looks different." So, I say that if they'd had one that was blue, one that was purple, kept the red, etc... people would be excited.

I think the 8 would have done better had it been more reasonably priced. I am in the boat of people who don't care for the changes in the X. The only thing that would make me upgrade my 6s at this point is better reception. My wife gets a signal on her 7 in places I cannot on my 6s for whatever reason.

I personally think the hardware was fine. It's the 10 year old iOS that is dated and boring.

This is what happens when you introduce a new product, then introduce another new product to replace the product just announced. Bad idea, Apple.

Agreed. I think they should have released the X, and called the 8/8 plus the 7s/7s plus. People are usually onboard with a change that doesn't affect appearance much on the 's' cycle of the phone.

All 3 of these phones should have come out at the same time, leaving people in stores, testing out all 3 of them, and deciding which one they wanted.

I'm not buying into the "everybody is waiting for the iPhone X" excuse.
Exactly. At this point, any prognostications about the iPhone X are pure speculation. I don't know what saddens me more: Apple pricing themselves out of the market (and the folks who will pay it), or the people who take idle speculation as gospel truth.

Critical thinking – (noun) 1. disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded, and informed by evidence.

iOS isn't 10 years old. There have been changes since the original. No, they didn't take all the icons and make it so you could Android them into weird configurations on your home screen, but that's what I think most people would probably call an innovation and it's just an icon appearance. ;)

Got the 8 over the weekend. It’s a nice upgrade from the 6S, but nothing mind-blowing. Seriously considering returning it and waiting for the next version of the X.

I don’t think it’s has black and white as people are waiting to buy the iPhone X instead and not even thinking about the 8/8+.

I actually know people who are on the fence and waiting to get a physical iPhone X in their hands to demo, see, and compare to see if it will be worth it to buy over the 8/8+. They may end up with the 8/8+ after all.

The sticker shock is real. The desire for the latest and greatest is real. Smart money is also real. This year introduced a choice of phones and the temptation of a new design/tech. Those who don’t upgrade every and aren’t desperate for a new phone right away are waiting to see which will make the most sense to them.

Not difficult?

"Hi welcome to the Apple Store. How can I help you?"
"I'd like an iPhone"
"Great, would you like the iPhone SE - it's available in 4 colours and in either 32GB or 128GB and starts at $469. We also have the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, they come in 4 colours and in either 32GB or 128GB and starts at $739. If you don't like either of those we have the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, they come in 5 different colours and in either 32 or 128GB and starts at $899, then we also have the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, they come in 64GB or 256GB and starts at $1059. We also have the iPhone X that is coming later and cannot be preordered yet, but will starts at $1319. Each one of these phones comes with a different processor and has different levels of performance. Also, each has a different camera and capabilities. Which would you like?"

"Great, what kind of price range are you looking to stay within?”
“About $400-$500” (hypothetical)
“Okay, great we have the iPhone 6s in that price range and if you wanted to spend just a bit more we also have the 7” (insert explanation of the difference between these models).

This isn’t rocket science, just basic sales.

That would have been a horrible sales person. Two or three questions upfront (budget, what you gonna use it mainly, current phone) snd the choice is down considerbly

Played with the X recently, didn't care for it at all. It's too small! I knew that before even holding it but it's not the same size as my Plus. And I like the screen size on the Plus models, even with the bezels which I honestly don't care about. It really reconfirmed to me that I should wait a year or two to buy a new phone from Apple. Nothing has really changed, it's all pretty much the same. 8 Plus and X essentially the same phone with a few minor differences and different form factors... completely different prices. OLED screen is nice but the 8 Plus screen is pretty amazing too.

Wish I could come up with a couple of new features that I really need.

When viewing my current phone, my fingers curve around and occlude the display, so going to no-bezels is not a feature, and would likely be an anti-feature.

"Wireless" charging doesn't excite me at the present because the charge-rate is dramatically slower than wired charging.

Improved sound in the 8 is welcome, as is the faster processor and better rear-camera, both of which are the same in the X.

The X's 3D camera is pretty cool, but until there's a rear-facing 3D camera, AR's true potential will be delayed. With respect to AR, the front 3D camera will be useful for things (other than phone unlocking) like "trying on" makeup, hair color, glasses, hats, etc - i.e., stuff having to do with your face.

Genuinely curious as to what "innovative" features people are looking for? Quadrophonic sound? A folding/flip smsartphone? Or maybe a mechanical keyboard?

Call me crazy, but I prefer the classic iPhone 8 design. All these bezel free phones have compromises, awkward fingerprint scanner placement, hard to fit cases and screen protectors, no front facing speakers, accidental touches when holding the phone etc..

I agree. I'm not ready to give up my home button either, and that notch is so horrid. I know Apple is trying to embrace it as a marketing ploy, but man it is ugly.

Dumb comment.
Yes, everyone waits for iPhone X!

Dumb move. They wait for the X and chances are they will sell out, leaving other consumers in the dust only to wait for another 3-6 months. This can have an adverse effect on the 8 lineup.

If people think that Face ID for the X is worth $1,000, they're sadly mistaken. A phone with that feature should be around $700. It's a BS excuse for Apple to price the X lineup with $1,000 every year, if that's what they're planning, when the iPad Pro costs nearly that much or more.

Facial recognition. Currently you may think of animojis, but we're going to see amazing apps built with the technology.

On another note, why can the 8 do that the se can't? Why pay extra hundreds of dollars for the 8? This is the same thing for the 8 vs x.

Ok, facial recognition. Myself, I prefer the home button.

Over the SE, the 8 has wireless charging, force touch, water resistance, stereo speakers to name a few. Thats not including upgrades like Bluetooth 5.0 / True Tone etc.

I wouldn’t pay $699 for the X.

I'm not buying into the "everybody is waiting for the iPhone X" excuse.
my "Apple Upgrade Program" is up in February and I will be purchasing a new X at that time. There are many people on this program and everyone started at a different time.
So yes, There are many whom will choose X, but not until the upgrade contract allows them to.

Gonna be a lot of disappointed people when the X sells out in 3 seconds, and will continue to be sold out through Christmas.

This! That said it is going to impact over all iPhone sales because if people want the X over the 8 and the X is having technical/supply problems then sales results are going to suffer.

IMHO the Apple shine has lost its luster a bit. There is no Apple product right now I would love to have, including the X. The UI on X is just a put off for me. I like the home button UI and notification of the 8 and below. Heck I want slide to unlock back but that will never happen. When my iPhone 7 needs replacing I will seriously look at the Android One phones available on Google Fi when the time comes.

7 e 7 plus related to 2017 are better phones than the previous ones were in their years. No need to jump on every upgrade when you have a good value in your pocket. Not for the masses, at least.

I will throw to the ring my 2 cents.

As we pay for our devices in cash, my lovely wife upon seeing the over-the-air reports on the new "$1,000" X, had the following reaction: "Is Apple out of its mind? With $1,000+ we can easily pay for one round-trip ticket to Europe!"
  1. We both have the SEs, and we are entirely happy with them. We love their size and build!
  2. IOS 11 runs great on our SEs:
    1. improved the responsiveness of its first-gen TouchID, which was balky before the update.
    2. adds a scanner under Notes, which will prove useful to small-receipt tracking.
  3. Conclusion: No upgrade of either 8/8+/X for us.
[On an aside, irrespective of this launch, we are sick of the torrent of hyperbole coming from Apple these days -- Cook in particular.]
