I think you are overestimating the number of people who care about the bezel. I think the numbers are low because it is not a significant upgrade over the 6s or 7, tech wise.

Which I actually would argue it is... If you could look beyond the bezels for a second, pretty much everything else has been tweaked or updated... To me that's pretty damn good...

If I were to upgrade my iPhone this year I would go for an iPhone 8 Plus and not the X... The X is gorgeous but expensive, a lot of first gen stuff in it, and very hard to get... iPhone 8/8 Plus is as good as the X, just not as gorgeous and my phone is an extensive work horse, so 8 Plus is a great phone.

Why buy an inferior ancient looking product when a superior product is available just a few weeks later?
Where is this nonsense coming from? The internals are pretty much the same except OLED and bigger screen. FaceID doesn't seem that good compared to TouchID so iPhone 8 is pretty much the same as iPhone X.

The small cosmetic change won't compensate for the extra cost.

Personally I hope the iPhone X will not be so successful as otherwise we are to blame for Apple's hiking prices.

I also don't think that everyone is waiting for the X version. Apple simply priced a lot of people out so those people can no longer (or don't want to) afford it and therefore I hope it will show.
£1150 for a phone is just too much for a lot of people.

haha how come everyone is thinking like ''yeah, everyone is waiting for the iPhone X".

Do you all think the world is full of rich people?
You know in how many countries you have to work a full month (or nearly a month ;) ) to even be able to buy an iPhone X?

I see a lot of people here talking about the iPhone like its buying a supersized meal at McDonalds.

How exactly is this meaningful data? I remember when everyone was pushing this Slice Intelligence BS about poor Apple Watch sales because it fit the narrative they were pushing. Same thing will happen here.
My thoughts exactly ... are we even comparing apples to apples? Did we have the "opt in to analytics" button during setup when the 5S was new? Sales data or GTFO, we don't care what some analyst who just likes free press might think.

Oh come on, it isn't that difficult.

They may not be confused about the multiple models, but I know a lot of older customers will be confused about the lack of a home button and how its multiple functions are replaced. This may leave a lot of people on the sideline (if lack of stock doesn’t accomplish this).

I am not buying that limited supply marketing gimmick.

If you look at the roll out of new iPhone's across the world, they are usually staggered over several months primarily to address supply/demand issues. However, for the Iphone X it is being rolled out the same day across several countries.

I am sure Apple started to build X's at the same time as 8 and 8 plus but deliberately holding it out to prevent cannibalizing the 8/8 Plus sales. Highly doubt the X will sell out quickly and we have to wait for months like air-pods.

However, there was word going around that Apple hasn't gotten started manufacturing the X until October due to delays. Obviously, they're not afraid to cannibalize the 8 line, but it could bite them in the a$$. Releasing the 8 and the X on keynote, in my opinion, is probably the stupidest move Apple's ever made. Also, some competitor will come out with a phone that will do exactly what the iPhone X can do but with a cheaper price point which can affect the market and this, I believe, is what Apple doesn't want people to know with an all out media assault to 'distract' people away from that.

It's one reason why I have an SE because it does exactly what I want it to do. With iPhone X, people are paying for the glass, cameras, chip and storage space along with materials. iOS doesn't cost a dime because the updates are free. So buying a $1,000 phone that has the exact same OS 11 that's on my 1st gen iPad Pro is ridiculous. I still have iOS 10 on my SE but haven't updated it yet. I want to wait until they clear up the kinks.

I just finished reading the Jobs biography and there were some very enlightening anecdotes in it. Steve said that Cook was not a "products guy" to his admittance despite having to step down from being CEO. This is quite true of what we're seeing with the Cook era as "Sculley 2.0", to an extent. Because if Jeff Williams takes over after Cook one day, it could get worse. The closest thing they can get to the Apple spirit is Craig, even though he's not like Jobs when it comes to having a critical eye.

there's not a whole lot of difference between buying an $800 phone and a $1000 phone.

I agree, but I think there' a hurdle mentally by crossing into 4 digits for a phone. Heck, I think you can configure the iPhone 8/8+ and include taxes so that its over a grand as well.

My consternation is that the X represents a shift in the pricing model, or to put it another way, the new normal. If Apple is charging this much for the X in 2017, 2018 it will not be less expensive but more likely more expensive.

I really don't like what apple has turned into this year. It seems like money is their main concern now and not pleasing hardcore fans of the past

Apple is dead for Old hardcore fans. The simplicity of the design, coupled with devices built around user experience has been dying or years. Cook will sign off anything that brings in $$$ . Get ready for even more product line fragmentation and gimmicks to sell to the hip and cool youth. Tim "Ballmer" Cook, is doing to apple, what Ballmer did to Microsoft, both bringing in record profits.......

What do you expect when you announce a "new" phone then immediately announce it's replacement literally 15 minutes later. Also, who wants an iPhone 6? Because that's what the 8 is. Better components, yes. But what people truly care about is form.

heh, yeah..
if the X sells well, 4 figure phones will likely be the new norm for flagship phones (and likely not just phones from Apple)

This! That said it is going to impact over all iPhone sales because if people want the X over the 8 and the X is having technical/supply problems then sales results are going to suffer.

IMHO the Apple shine has lost its luster a bit. There is no Apple product right now I would love to have, including the X. The UI on X is just a put off for me. I like the home button UI and notification of the 8 and below. Heck I want slide to unlock back but that will never happen. When my iPhone 7 needs replacing I will seriously look at the Android One phones available on Google Fi when the time comes.

If this happens, or continues to progressively get worse, chances are they will have to boot Cook off his position. Apple needs to get back on course and the only way to do that is to put a new face on the CEO position. They need to change things up. Of the many companies that have freshened up their executive positions and strategies, Apple stayed too safe.

turn it round and when your boss deducts $200 from your pay check and says there is not a lot of difference, see how it feels then? /s
well, if your phone is financed, you're looking at maybe an $8/month deduction..

regardless, having $200 deducted from a paycheck is not an equal situation to spending $200 more on an item.. they are very different scenarios.

No question, not just from a higher profits perspective, but also from a brand perspective. If LG, or Samsung want to be considered luxury or premium brands, but are priced lower then apple that gives an appearance that they're an inferior phone. I remember in my Marketing class, way back in the day about artificially pricing a product high to give it the perception that its a luxury item.

Even if that is the case, customers will start to figure out Apple's scheme by next year and realize the jig is up. They're gonna go with something cheaper that does literally everything the X does. And when they do, Apple's $1,000 price argument will be an embarassment.

You seem to forget there are over 7 billion people in the world and out of that number having a luxury phone is important. Ultimately marketing is also a numbers game, how many will buy kind of thought.

Personally my straight 6 needs a new battery and I will buy the X when it comes out. I’m just hoping the new tech stuff will be good for 4 years like my 6 has been.

BTW, yes there are a whole bunch of us waiting for the X and are turning down the 8.

I wouldn't necessarily say it is "because" of customers waiting for the iPhone X. I'm a 7+ and going to wait for next year's "X" device.

I’m waiting for next year’s X too. Due to supply constraints, most people on here are going to enjoy about 8 months of novelty before the next X is introduced.

ok, well i hope so. i hope there are sub$1000 phones that do literally everything the the more expensive ones do as well as share equal build quality and whatnot.

unfortunately, i don't think that's going to happen but we'll see.
i do think we'll continue seeing feature and quality differences between top priced phones and the lower priced models.
