Or many are taking the step to Pixel 2 or Galaxy 8 with Oled and very good specifications for cheaper

Im glad people are trying out new phones. I go through phones like underwear. I've tried the Pixel, the One Plus 5, the S8+, and a Note 8 all in the last coupld of months waiting for the X. All beautiful wonderful phones, but without software updates, having a million choices to control your texts, messages, everything needing permissions to everything, its terrible for those already invested in an Apple ecosystem. My group chats with iPhoners never work or go through. I cant not be able to talk to my wife and kids in our group chats so I stick with Apple. I feel people will find the same issues as I have and come back. A lot of people always do.

Just based on rumours we can guess one of two options. I'm by no means privy to information that we all don't have

for months rumours were that manufacturing couldn't keep up with demand and would be lower than expectations.
Suddenly, last week we see rumours "Manufacturers expected to meet X demand"

so we can predict one of two outcomes.

Manufacturing rumours were wrong, or manufacturers suddenly found production capabilities they didn't think they had.
or demand is low enough, that current production levels are adequate.

either case could be true right now.

Logical fallacy. How do you know there are only two possible choices?

Here’s another possibility: The rumors were all wrong and Apple is simply going about business as usual.

The iPhone 8 exists because they were unable to deliver on the X at the time of the "regular" announcement. That would have been a complete mess if they held the event with nothing to say but "we may be ably to deliver a limited number of new iPhones in November-ish..." They had to have a product to go with the event and the 8 fit that bill.

Now that they have better clarity on the ability to produce and deliver the X, the 8 is no longer necessary.

That 1.5% drop today is noise. The shares are up considerably more than that since the last iPhone event.

Once the X's start hitting the street this will all be forgotten.

FWIW
DLM
They would have post poned the event if they had nothing to release. 8 was always coming out.

They probably made the 8 so that people would say, “meh.. it’s the same old phone design that’s been around for years now, I’ll just fork out the extra 200 and get the X”
While I suspect the facial software may develop into something more compelling with time, right now it really isn’t functionally anything more than a means to entertain your friends at parties and signal your affluence.

Interesting times. I know of only 2 people that are planning to buy either the 8 or the X models. Most are are trying to decide between the 6s and the 7 models that each have a more compelling price to value ratio. I suspect Apple’s decision to carry this many lines an price points was strategically meant to draw in Android users. What they may have accomplished though is just rearranged the deck chairs and caused people like me with money and a 3 year old 6 to take a wait and see position from the sidelines.

Same here. Check above.

fair assesment. just as I said, what I know from rumours / sites so far. I'm an armchair analyst and could be talking out of my rear. but this is a Mac Rumors forum and I find it amusing to speculate

Because I wanted the 8?
And because, until a critical mass of X models hit the streets, there won’t be sufficient incentive to develop the software that will make its hardware innovations compelling. Until that software happens, and I suspect it will, there will be a new an improved model X to buy or an old model X to get at a discount. In the mean time, I Ha are a model 6 and a series 2 Apple Watch that do what I need and money invested that is earning a nice rate of return fo later.

Since few have used Face ID, your statement seems a bit extreme. I would hazard to guess that Apple tested the functionality ad nauseum and found it to be a superior user experience to Touch ID.

There was an article long ago that detailed one of the approaches of the design team: they’d have new designs sitting around for awhile beside those currently shipping. They’d never promote a new design until it made the old feel clunky and outdated.

Rumors say that 7 is outselling the 8. Makes sense to me, I don't get 8 existence at all if 7 is still being sold.

I can explain why I bought an 8+ over the 7+. In a nutshell, I wanted the best possible internals and longest possible OS support because I intend for this phone to last me for some years. So for longevity's sake, I'd rather pay more to get the current generation internals (the same ones in the X) than start out a generation behind.

For others, saving money is the priority.

That's why both the 7 and 8 are offered, and even the 6s and SE. This year Apple is offering a model for just about everyone, which means that probably no one model will be a record breaker, even the X. But here's the thing, as long as you buy ANY iPhone that's a win for Apple.

I've compared my 7 to my friend's 8 and only noticed that they've increased the breakable surface of the device and that the camera has better HDR.

Sure, I know that there are more changes.
But as long as the user doesn't notice them, they pretty much don't exist.

We've reached the point where a better performing SoC isn't noticeable during real life usage anymore.
It's the same that happened to PCs years ago. Some cheap SATA SSD and some Intel 2,5+ GHz dual core is as good as it gets for 90% of people. You could have a 4,3 GHz octa core and a PCIe SSD with 7 times the bandwidth, your browsing and office experience won't get better anyway.

That's the point where lots of MacRumors users and I differ from most people.
We actually need more performance on our PCs because we perform processor, IO and in some cases GPU intensive tasks with it.

That's all stuff I don't do on my phone. I do mails, browsing, messaging, calls, navigation and some photo and video.

No, that's not why Apple made the iPhone 8. You're not considering the amount of iPhone users were are not interested in the iPhone X and might be upgrading from an older model iPhone under the 7. The iPhone 8 Offers t similar functionality that iPhone X has, and it's at a cheaper price point. Not to mention, it retains touch ID for those who don't prefer Face ID.

No problem.
Will rise prices to (market decline + 25%) excl. AppleTax

1) they didn’t release the same phone four years in a row. 7 wasn’t the 6 design and 8 wasn’t the 7 design. It’s pretty blind to think they’re the same.
2) many people don’t care about having the most unique, newest design. If they like the design and love the internals, their phone does well.
Whaha !
Guess the iPhone 9 will be the 8 with new emojies and 2 new wallpapers - to further diversify looks
(otherwise it would cannibalize the X...)
Man, people will celebrate a dozen Bezel years bigtime !

It's really too bad that this is the case because the 8/8 Plus are great phones...but I totally understand why demand is down. X is coming out, and the design is largely unchanged since 2014. This is the most mature iteration of the design to be sure (glass back is several steps forward) but that alone won't do it for most people.

Phil Schiller must be disappointed by this news...
...as could be seen in his presentation of the iPhone 8.

I just got iPhone 7 after Apple announced Turkey price. $1400 Ok for me for iPhone X but price is starting $1665 for 64GB iPhone X in Turkey. I just give up. I can't never pay up to $1400 for any phone which I didn't.
Apple Marketeers seem to ignore that we need to keep at least 1 kidney.

The iPhone 8 should never have existed. Its sole reason for being is to provide a price buffer between last year's 7 and the new X. It would have looked bad for Apple to have a $549 iPhone 7 and a $1,000 iPhone X as the current product line. The price increase would have really stood out.

The X is the natural replacement for the 7 as current technology in blended into new products. However, Apple doesn't want that comparison in the media. By giving consumers the 8 as a "flagship" they are able to deflect a lot of the criticism over the $350 increase in price from the 7 to the "luxury" iPhone X.

Hmm, let's see... 8 Plus vs. 7 Plus. $130 more expensive. Twice the storage. Far superior processor and graphics. Significant camera upgrades. True Tone display. Bluetooth 5.0. Wireless charging. Fast charging.

You're right, I don't see any difference. I'd rather have the slower phone with fewer features off the bat that also goes obsolete a whole year earlier and save the $130! /s

I've yet to see any speed test that blew me away. "Significant camera upgrades" obviously isn't fooling anyone. True Tone Display? Seriously, that's so important? And finally, it's a proven fact that wireless charging only degrades the battery faster, hence shorter lifespan.

And #1, I can get a refurbished iPhone 7 in pristine condition much cheaper than your $130 discount and with more storage.

Keep selling it for Timmy Boy. You must not have worked in sales very long nor him.

OH, one last thing, IOS 11 means I lose all my free games too or as Steve Jobs once said, "Bag O' Hurt"! :D

This reminds me of that time the WSJ ran a front page headline claiming iPhone 5S production was being cut way back. Of course the stock tanked on the day and everyone was OMG this proves Apple is doomed. Of course from all we know the story was bogus but it doesn’t matter as people believe what they want to believe. And the press always believes Apple is doomed. This quarter might be good but next quarter will be bad. And if next quarter is good then it’s the quarter after that that will be bad. Just perpetual doom.

Apple isn't doomed. iPhone 8 is.

So there will be plenty of iPhone Xs then.
Otherwise why would Apple cut 8 production?

It could be iP8 sales are way below estimates so Apple is stockpiling too many.

You think people are buying 8's in mass quantity this month just because it's the latest and all the demand will then switch to the X as soon as it comes out?

Releasing 2 phones 6 weeks apart was a huge mistake.

The point is we just don't know and can't infer from this.
