The Samsung crowd is already preparing their mockery for Apple copying their feature...

The Samsung crowd are doing this for the following reason:

Wireless charging (QI), better battery, larger screen, OLED, higher resolution, 3.5mm jack, SD slot, IP68, Facial recognition, Iris scanner, better low light camera, lower price and the list goes on.....

So basically the iPhone sucks, but I guess we're addicted to IOS and the Apple ecosystem :D

My thoughts exactly. Plus being as old as I am my face is so puffy right after I wake up there won't be a chance to check my mails right away. I'll have to wake up slowly, make some coffee, take a shower, shave my face and wait a hour or two before I can open my phone? Sounds like a courageous move Apple might make!

One more time: facial recognition is usually about static head feature angles and distances. And that's more about your underlying skull shape, which does not change.

Your eyes don't change their distance apart no matter how puffy your face gets. Your nose doesn't shift closer to your forehead when you grow stubble overnight. And your ears don't move up and down between facial registrations.

Of course it would. If they remove Touch ID it has to work with face ID. It's the only way for Apple Pay to work without using an apples watch.

Good point, still not sure what safeguards would be in place to prevent others from pointing your phone at your face to unlock it? I am also not convinced Touch ID is being trashed.

Where has it been said that TouchID is being replaced?

Well, the guy who found all the stuff into the firmware said he didn't find anything about TouchID.
I hope it will stay there and eventually be put under the display, but I'm prepared for the worst case scenario: no touchID at all

Yes, that's the real question. But obviously if facial is being used, Apple will have thought of this as well. So instead of lazy griping, people should be thinking of ways Apple might be getting around it. Like requiring a special touch or a double blink or who knows what.

I am also not convinced Touch ID is being trashed.

Agreed. I still think they might put it on the power switch.

Alternatively, I wonder if they might combine facial and iris together.

Have you never seen any military or spy movies?

Cameras have been able to see in the dark for decades. Especially in this case, where our face would no doubt be illuminated with infrared.

The answer is no, darkness is not a problem at all.

What about a bright environmental, where the sun emits more infrared than the phone. The IR sensors will receive waaaay to many noise signals...

It's the same safeguards against someone grabbing your finger and mashing it on the TouchID sensor.

But let's think about this... if someone else is handling your phone... you've got bigger problems. :p

I think sometimes people forget that Apple has probably been working on this technology for many years and have thought of a number of different situations that could occur, they will also have tested many of these out in the real world. This isn't Apple's first gig, I'm sure they know what they are doing after all it was Apple who came up and made Touch ID popular.

This is a great point, no thief is going to point the phone at your face in order to unlock it, unless you are being robbed at knife or gun point but then they could just get you to put your finger on Touch ID so that logic is kind of out the window. I just hope the system isn't fooled as easily as it is with Samsung's version/latest offering where it can be fooled by a simple picture!

the touchID is a hit-or-miss for me anyway. I have sweaty hands. gonna miss it in a way though. not sure if I'm ready to give it up already

Same for me, my sweaty fingers mean I have to either keep wiping the button and my finger or just put in my passcode.

Will this will solve the problem that the Government had with Apple not providing the backdoor to the iPhone. Just place the dead criminal in front of the camera so they can get into the device.

Well, the guy who found all the stuff into the firmware said he didn't find anything about TouchID.

I'm still wondering why HomePod firmware has so much information about future iPhones. :p

But remember... there will be hundreds of millions of iPhones out in the world that will still have TouchID sensors... possibly including the iPhone 7S to be released this Fall.

I'm guessing TouchID will be supported until iOS 16 at the least.

So if there's no mention of TouchID hidden in the firmware now... there will be soon.

What if it's dark like paying in a bar or club?
What if it's Halloween?
What if your wearing your bike helmet?
What if you grow a beard?

This won't work for any turnstyles i.e., the tube contactless payments. I can imagine all the business peoples headbutting the contactless machine to get to the underground looking like idiots.

Sometimes contactless machines are in arms reach away. Facial recognition won't work trying to line up angles of the camera sensing your face etc. This I'm sure will take massive amounts of processing as well as lightning neede to be instant as touch ID

Plus I miss slipping my arm out of my bed to unlock my phone because I can't open my eyes from the lack of sleep.

Halloween might be a problem if youre wearing a full facemask. The other scenarios wouldn’t. It would use an infrared laser or something similar so darkness or facial hair wouldnt be a problem. I doubt a bike helmet would either. A full motorcycle helmet might be though :)

But yeah, id rather this and just touchID on the back or the power button to cover more scenarios.

I can't wait to see people holding their phone up to their face to pay for stuff in stores. That's just going to be hilarious. Although I hardly ever really see people using Apple Pay so maybe it won't make a difference.

Also, get ready to hover over your phone while it lays on your desk to open it.
Actually, people look at their phone all the time.

They just introduced Touch ID into the MacBook line so why the hell would they be now trying to eliminate it?
True I didn't even realise this, even though right from the beginning of the rumours I've never liked the idea of Touch ID being removed. Lets just hope there will be Touch ID under the display...

I wonder how the rumoured facial recognition system going to work in dark places, with people wearing glasses of all sorts, etc-etc...
[doublepost=1501757507][/doublepost]
So if I am doing winter sports, I am going to have to take off my face protection rather than just taking off a glove? And if it's anything like Touch ID, I will have to have a face profile for day, night, winter, summer, dry, humid, shave day, non-shave day, good mood, bad mood, sunglasses, no sunglasses, etc. Oh but wait, I'm sure we'll be limited to five profiles.

And helmets too, and surgeon-style uniforms, and let’s not forget beekeepers, the list goes on!

You'll look pretty silly doing that, especially since it won't be necessary to use ApplePay with facial recognition.

Hopefully, Apple will release some how-to videos to keep people from trying to put their faces next to the credit card swipey thingy.

You are assuming that you need to place it next to your face...like a d*** a** I look at the phone every time I use apple pay to check is the fingerprint has been "accepted" so were is the difference with facial recognition if works well.

Same for people talking about beard or darkness... it's infrared... and it's a technology proved to work with glasses...

You people are so small minded, no wonder none of you guys are in the position to take calls like this one.

I find it funny, that no one, no website, no apple-community commentator - explores the angle and thoughts on "what if this leak is a hoax, a purposely planted misinformation from Apple"...? to throw us all off course... or throw the competition off course..?

I am inclined to agree with this. Apple is changing to a security future that can be easily defeated by holding up any picture of me to my phone, sounds like B.S. to me. Than again we are talking about the same company that decided to remove the 3.5mm, industry standard headphone jack, from iPhones.

In this thread: people who don’t understand how IR cameras work. Or maybe they don’t read.

They would need a fully 3D bust of your head to do it (if it’s only using VERY basic IR 3D scanning). As thousands of people keep saying, it’s IR facial recognition, it works in pitch black instantly and can’t be defeated by a photo, it has been in consumer products for years and works perfectly on the surface pro line.

People misidentify faces all the time. Fingerprints, not so much.... I still think this FaceID sounds like a poorly thought out idea.

I'm actually assuming the opposite of what you're accusing.

I wonder how many times this happens? The thief demanding you unlock your phone with your fingerprint before they steal it?

Because there's not much they can do with your phone once they are gone. They can use it for a while... but eventually they will be prompted to put in the passcode.

And that's if you haven't killed the phone remotely and/or told your carrier to block it.

Or... the thief gets you to unlock your phone with your fingerprint... AND gets your passcode... AND gets your AppleID and password so they can turn off Activation Lock... AND gets your recovery email password... AND... :p

Stealing an iPhone is a lot of work. Unless all they want is the parts.

Exactly my point! i don't know if you remember all the fuss that was made when Touch ID was announced, there was talk that people could have their fingers cut off and so on , this situation with facial recognition reminds me of it all over again  all we have to do is look to see how that turned out (with everyone loving Touch ID).
