According to the rumors, Apple couldn't get TouchID to work with the new iPhones. So, it looks like they might have just settled on the facial recognition instead. Hopefully they will get it to work right.

I have a feeling a lot of people are going to go back to typing in a passcode.

Lol, almost NOBODY used passcodes back then for the like 200+ times you unlock your phone each day... what a nuisance! People just used “slide to unlock”.
There was basically: pre 5S where the overwhelming majority had unsecure phones; and post 5S where almost everyone has an incredibly secure phone.

yes, but like watchOS it doesnt need a full blown ios11 right? i dont see in watchOS things about iphone

It’s expected to have similar specs to an iPhone 6, an A8 and 1gb of ram. It’s a lot closer to iPhone or iPad than an Apple Watch. According to these leaks/accidents it does indeed run a variant of iOS proper, obviously with irrelevant graphics and Touch APIs removed or disabled by release time. Apparently, this OS in its current state (for reasons that remains a mystery to me at least) has information on capabilities of other Apple devices stored as key pairs.

I can't wait to see people holding their phone up to their face to pay for stuff in stores. That's just going to be hilarious.

Sounds like "fingers will get cut" doubts before touch ID.
Anyways, I think you have not followed rumors on this. You don't need to hold it up to your face. It is meant to be 3D detection's and should work at any angle or position as long as you look at it (and I assume you will look at it before you make a payment since you want to know the amount you pay)

People already think we’re crazy for
using Apple Pay with Touch ID authentication. Just imagine what Pearl is going to bring... merchants are going to shut it off completely (hope not).

Also, get ready to hover over your phone while it lays on your desk to open it.

Everything you’re trolling about is contradicted by what we’ve learned so far. FaceID continuously authenticates your face at extreme angles and in the dark. So if your FaceID iPhone is lying on your desk, you’ve already authenticated it. It’s unlocked before you pick it up.

For store purchases it authenticates as you’re taking your phone out of your pocket. No need to look at the phone head on.

And before you whine about someone taking your authenticated phone and using it, FaceID will detect a non-owner is accessing the device and immediately lock them out. And no, it can’t be tricked by a photograph.

From everything we’ve learned so far FaceID is faster, easier, more secure, and more convenient than TouchID. Therefore there’s no reason to also include TouchID.

As far as your claim that you “hardly ever see people using Apple Pay” - anecdotal evidence means nothing. Apple Pay is already widely used as a matter of statistical fact, especially outside the US where POS tech is generally more advanced.

The more you know...

I like the idea of continuous authentication... ambient perpetual authentication where the phone is constantly gathering clues to prove that you are you. Sounds great! And convenient!

Phil Schiller will be introducing this. He has zero charisma. He's not funny even though he tries to be. He's awkward. For a marketing person, he's an embarrassment.

Will this affect the phone? Maybe. If people see through his BS. Has this ever happened before? No.

Eat yourself.

I have a feeling a lot of people are going to go back to typing in a passcode.

Apple has been rumored to be developing facial scanning technology for years, in addition to them buying multiple facial recognition companies like RealFace (2017), Emotient (2016), Faceshift (2015), and Polar Rose (2010). I'm sure this was something that has been on the road map for quite some time and I would be willing to bet TouchID under the display was actually the plan B, not the other way around. Secure facial recognition would be much harder to implement than a fingerprint sensor due to the advanced algorithms that would be needed, unlike the Galaxy S8's version that could be bypassed by a photo.

This was a common sense conclusion.

Traditional contactless credit cards already worked without any authentication.

Apple Pay currently works with an insecure 4 digit passcode.

Why would Apple Pay not work with enhanced facial recognition? Banks should be lining up to agree to Face ID.

If we talk about security I agree.
I unlock my watch with a 6 digit pin and unless I take it off I'm able to pay by just double tapping on the side.

If FaceID is implemented correctly, and I'm confident it will, I see no big security threats.
It should work like touchID, if it can't recognise the face correctly it fails and your only option is to enter the pin.
TouchID may be more convenient for paying since you can double tap on home button to open wallet, then rest your finger on the home button and you're done. With FaceID you'd have to look to your iPhone to get your face scanned, not so immediate but still better than using a plastic card.

My only concern is about everyday stuff. I usually leave my iPhone on the table and unlock it for a quick glance without pointing it directly to my eyes.
FaceID should work at a wide angle in order to be convenient in those cases

Poor attempt to spin this article on Phil Schiller and disparage at him over nothing, as if there is some correlation between facial recognition and him Not even mentioned in the article.

It will be an IRIS scanner so it will scan your eyes. You will be able to set it up with or without glasses and there will be a PINnumber as a backup.

There is nothing new here other OEM's have been offering this for years.

The Samsung crowd is already preparing their mockery for Apple copying their feature...

No Touch ID, no sale. Then again I got my iPhone 7 plus in February so I am not planning an upgrade for another year or two at least anyway. :D Most likely they will have sorted out any kinks and/or fixed the Touch ID under glass (if the latter was actually the case).

Obviously you never used Apple Pay in person, and have unfortunately got a wrong impression about how it works.

Nothing more satisfying than when someone who finds it necessary to start their posts with a demeaning "Obviously you...." then goes on to be wrong, wrong, wrong.

All these FaceID 'what if...' posts remind me of the run up to the launch of the iPhone 5S and TouchID.

Guys - it's Apple. It will all be fine.

I trust Apple with this kind of things.
TouchID on the 5s was something new though, you had the passcode before and nothing else.
Now they are replacing TouchID with FaceID, it ought to work as good as, or better than TouchID, which is great.

Oh C'mon mate. Don't spoil a perfectly stupid thread with a sensible and probable reply. The rest of you PLEASE continue with the "What if I cut myself shaving" and "I'm not going to put my face up to the card reader" type comments. They really do brighten up a relatively dull day. I've not laughed so much in ages...

From what you say, anyone picking up your phone and putting it anywhere near your face, will give them full access to the phone?
You are really saying and hoping for that?

So if I am doing winter sports, I am going to have to take off my face protection rather than just taking off a glove? And if it's anything like Touch ID, I will have to have a face profile for day, night, winter, summer, dry, humid, shave day, non-shave day, good mood, bad mood, sunglasses, no sunglasses, etc. Oh but wait, I'm sure we'll be limited to five profiles.

My thoughts exactly. Plus being as old as I am my face is so puffy right after I wake up there won't be a chance to check my mails right away. I'll have to wake up slowly, make some coffee, take a shower, shave my face and wait a hour or two before I can open my phone? Sounds like a courageous move Apple might make!

Too bad, I was getting ready for iPhone 8 after reading about the possibly increased battery life. Maybe I'd only have to charge it 2-3 times during the day. :/

You hold their phone up to your face when you text, browse, check emails etc
