iPhone 8 flopping already...

Well it's 6:55 EST here and I can preorder an iPhone 8 plus, unlocked for delivery in a week or just over a week depending on color and capacity. That tells me everyone is going for the iPhone X in about a month.
Fine with me. Just means I'll get my 8+ on release day. Pre-orders was a breeze this year. Let them all go for the X. I'd hate to be one of those people for the X Pre-order. It's gonna be a blood bath with probably shipping dates exceeding into 2018 with 20 minutes of preorders going live.

And as much as I love this forum that's exactly why this place can be really, really trying place to be around the time of a product launch.

There's so many posts like the original one I don't know if people are looking to push their point of view or genuinely don't know how retail works, let alone retail companies the size of Apple.

I've been here for multiple launches and I swear this one has been the worst in terms of ridiculous threads, complaints, and unreasonable claims. This year's iPhone lineup is very controversial.

What is fragmented about the SE? Just Apple giving choices and the people I know with the SE love it to death.
Nothing particular. Except it's a legacy screen that is still hanging around. There are 4 screen sizes with varying aspect ratios for devs to deal with now. Just keeps growing!

The 8 fragments the ecosystem further by not further deprecated the 6/6s/7 plus screen sizes to yesteryear to be replaced by the X.

I'm glad that it didn't sell out fast. I'm moving from Android back to an iPhone (last was a 6+) and after comparing the 8 to the X... and coming from the standpoint of the Galaxy series which is way more "edge to edge" than the X... I see no real compelling reason for the X that outweighs the huge flaws. I ordered an 8+ 256 at 10am and only have a 1-2 week ship window.

I hope the X bombs in the end once people see the issues I'm outlining below because the design was horrible. People made fun of the essential phone for having a notch as well, and theirs was in the end more elegantly done, even if the phone is pretty bad otherwise. At least with the Essential it doesn't have the horrible developer "safe area" space that the X has, leading it to actually have the smallest screen of the 3 phones in terms of usable space.

Pros of of the X:
  1. oled (this I will miss)
  2. stabilized cameras
  3. obvious front-facing camera trickery for selfies that could've been done on the 8 if Apple didn't want to force X.
Cons of the X:
  1. That notch is ugly and places un-usable "ears" on the top for most apps. Will cut into videos if you want a full screen experience, otherwise videos are in a smaller than iPhone 8 screen area.
  2. The "almost" edge to edge gives very little space for grip. See complaints about the Galaxy series, especially now that "edge to edge" for the sides is on all Galaxy phones, on how easy it is for the phone to break or slip or the edges to get in the way of doing things.
  3. The camera enhancements had no reason not being on the 8 as well; Apple did it just to force those wanting the best camera to upgrade to the badly designed X phone.
  4. The design is ugly, not user friendly nor developer friendly. Developers are not going to be able to make use of those safe areas very easily, which is going to amount to letter-boxing on a lot of applications.
  5. Viewable area is a lie. See that safe area? Anything not in that blue area is off-limits for most apps.View attachment 718006
It's not going to bomb!
Not sure why anyone would even hope it does really stupid thing to say.
You people complain about the prices when what do you use every wakeing minute of your life YOUR PHONE is used more then anything you own.
And no one can deny that.
So dropping 1,000 on something I use all day every day is worth it to me.
And I hope they sell more then any other phone made.
And I would bet money on it they do!

People really need to get some perspective. Preorders began less than 5 hours ago, at a time when practically no one is awake, and people are now waking up to find that it's already impossible to get a launch day delivery, and this is with people knowing that a more premium phone is just 6 weeks away.

We also have no idea what the supply was like. It's ridiculous and irrational to think that any conclusions can be drawn right now. People are just letting their preconceptions and personal opinions influence their interpretation.

I have never seen pre order status 12 hours later still showing launch day delivery dates.

I didn't say a single thing about price. I'm just saying the design is very bad from a usability perspective and from a developer perspective. I can say both matter to me, being a developer of a very popular app that exists on both the iOS and Android ecosystem. :) The guidelines for what can be done for the X are annoying, are going to lead to bad looking apps as smaller teams have to contend with screen areas they aren't supposed to deal with, and customers are going to think they're getting a nice, large screen on a relatively small device but the truth of the matter is the usable area is actually smaller than an iPhone 8.

The iPhone X's only real advantages are in the camera system, which is entirely artificial. They could've put the same thing on the iPhone 8, but Apple needed enough differentiators to make people think they should upgrade to the iPhone X despite the numerous flaws.

There are so many ways they could have approached going "edge to edge" and just about every competitor that has attempted has done better both big and small; Galaxy edge devices (and S8/newer), Essential Phone, the Mi Miix, etc. There are a lot of examples of what could've been done, but Apple had a strong insistence in not placing the Touch ID on the back or onto the power button (as one rumor gave), went with an ugly notch that led to some very real, very bad UX issues for app developers to deal with, and some pretty big letter boxing that includes 3 sides if you go landscape.

So yes, I hope the iPhone X flops and causes Apple to go back to the drawing board. They have the best hardware (performance speaking), best app ecosystem which is slowly becoming not enough. I want to see them succeed (apps on two platforms, competition! and I personally like iOS/ecosystem, even if I question their design choices lately).

After 4 years of releasing the same phone, there should be no production issues.

I'm not convinced that Apple could get the same camera setup on the X on the 8+. The X is a thicker phone and the camera bump also appears to be thicker (and a larger area overall). It's probably a big reason why the X has OIS on the Telephoto lens when the 8+ doesn't.

Please go back and read through the pre-order launch-day threads for the 6, 6s and 7. They are full of people complaining about how Apple needs to get its act together and have enough supply to meet demand. Now that supply is close enough to demand to avoid massive backlogs, the chicken littles think that it's evidence of lack of demand. There's simply no way to know until Apple starts releasing actual numbers.

iphone X is going to look like a UUUGE success because apple is pulling the same stunt it did with airpods.

1.Step one create hysteria around yield, short supply, domesday upon us [Done? check]
2. F,u.ck with peoples minds by changing the availability to weeks out within minutes of preorder
3. CONTROL the flow of availability, choke it even more to cause panic buys

Dont buy the short supply non sense from apple. Buy it if you really want it not because of games apple plays.

I for one am happy with the supply/ demand ratio. Why would people want demand to grossly outpace supply. Last year I just gave up and waited 2 months to get my iPhone and this year I just went to T-Mobile and ordered it no problem. People should be able to get the products they want when they want. Supply constrains wether real or business strategy are horrible for consumers.

I know others have stated this but just to point out: people buying new iPhones on the day of launch will be their hardcore loyalist fans. Those people lean towards the perceived higher end phones (i.e. the Plus models typically) this year there is a new higher end phone which is the X; since those users would want the best Apple has to offer they are most likely waiting for the X to release which is later. As a result the 8/8+ demand is lower because the people who make up the demand are still waiting for the device they really want.

That isn't to say it's a flop; I am sure the 8/8+ will sell a ton of phones but the enthusiasm is likely directed towards a different device this year which isn't out yet. At least from the crowds who typically buy day 1.

It isn't helped by the fact the X appeals to people who like smaller phones or people who like bigger screens. Its design meets both those markets demands: A larger screen in a smaller form factor.

Just curious... To all of the people who say Apple intentionally restricts supply just to create demand... Why aren't they doing that today?

Maybe they know you're on to them.

The 8 is mostly here because Apple couldn't deliver X. Keynote would have been another announced product not to be seen anytime soon and what it's position will be with against other oled smart phones. Stock market would not be happy. Even with October launch who knows when will get.
