The iphone 6SSS with the same dinosaur design along with the same pathetic screens & rescaling is the new iphone 5C. It's positioned as a mid tier product. I'm sure some will buy them but they're for the mostly unwashed.

There is no iPhone 6SSS. Douchebag comment.

The screens have never been pathetic, and have always been highly praised.

It is not a "new iPhone 5C" - the internals match that of the iPhone X, just a different form factor. The iPhone 5C was a dressed-up iPhone 5 from the year prior.

I'm sure we will see sales figures over the next few weeks, a lot of people could be holding out for the iPhone X, that's the reason I didn't get the 8 Plus, why do that when for around £200 more you get:

OLED screen with HDR
Face ID
Telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture
Portrait Mode on the front camera
Portrait lighting on the front camera
Dual optical image stabilisation

Also the band around the iPhone X is made from stainless steel, obviously that's not a big thing but it is a difference from the 8 and 8 Plus. I don't think the 8 or 8 Plus is a bad phone but I do think a lot of people will be looking at the X, especially since that's the one that has had most of the headlines.

I suspect the X will follow the pattern of every iPhone launch, delays leading into next year.

Had the X not existed, people would have still Bought the 7S (8) and it would have sold out asap, the mentality with people these days is to have the newest.
The only reason people are calling the 8 a 7s is because the front looks the same. Had there been no. Then the 8 would have looked different from the front. No way Apple's only phone in 2017 would still have massive bezels.

The basic form factor of the smartphone is baked. What can you really change besides getting rid of bezels (which is what Apple did with the X) or introducing gimmicks like curved edges? What can Samsung do to make the Galaxy S9 look different than the S8?

Yup, the basic form factor is not going to change not that bezels are pretty much gone. The only major innovation left to figure out IMHO is batteries and power consumption. I would love a 2-3 day smartphone in a normal size form factor.

It certainly doesn't mean that it's a flop  but time will tell and we will see.

May be wrong but isn't Portrait mode and lighting also on the 8+ which you are saying is $200 more? What about the things you lose? Like a slightly bigger screen surface wise, and touch ID?

I ordered a 7plus when they dropped in price because the 8 is nothing crazy different and the X is more than I want to pay and I don't like no home button

Out of curiosity I checked the pre order page and was shocked at 7amEST in Canada I was able to order almost every colour and size variation for delivery on Sept 22

I’m personally waiting for triangle-shaped smartphones.

Seriously though, it does seem like a lot of people are calling for a “new design” and no one can really articulate what they actually want.

Can Face ID really be considered a feature when Touch ID is as good or better? And if security is a factor, then the best option is always a passcode, Face ID won't save you. Face ID just seems like a workaround due to the lack of physical button, but not an advancement.

Not on the front facing camera they are not thats only on iPhone X. As for losing that depends on your perspective, Touch ID is being replaced and I think Apple will eventually replace Touch ID all together with Face ID. Screen surface? The iPhone X is 5.8" display where as the iPhone 8 is 5.5" if that matters to you then yea you could consider it a loss.

Well it's 6:55 EST here and I can preorder an iPhone 8 plus, unlocked for delivery in a week or just over a week depending on color and capacity. That tells me everyone is going for the iPhone X in about a month.

Either people are holding on to the 6S's (me) and 7's. Or the iPhone X is going to be a monster hit.

The pre-orders are brisk for few reasons (my observations)
1. Several of us in US, used the carrier trade-in to get iPhone 7 or 7+ and are stuck for another 12 months.
2. Carrier discounts for iPhone 8 is awful - send your old phone, sign up for unlimited (verizon) and only get around $300 or less, which means more money
3. 7/7+ are almost identical to 8/8+ with slight improvements, so does not tickle a lot of people, unless you are an Apple fan boy
4. Most of them ready to jump are waiting for iPhone X.

The 5.5inch 8+ have more screen surface area than a 5.8inch X dude.

Just like a 9.7inch ipad have more area than a 10.1 inch android tablet.

I don't consider it a "loss" some people might tho, that's something to consider when making the decision for the iPhone X.

The 5.8" of the X includes the notch area. The X is also narrower so the screen is tall and skinny. They are about the same screen area, just with a different geometry.

I understood that although the 8 plus is a bigger phone overall, the actual screen area of the X is the same or slightly bigger than Iphone 8 plus. So you are getting the same screen real estate in a more compact package. Plus also the X has 2436x1125 458ppi resolution while the iphone 8 plus has 1920x1080 401ppi.

If this is true it sounds like while the X might be physically smaller you get more screen real estate, both actually and DPI wise.

So, I mean, if you are looking for an actual PHYSICAL bigness, sure, then the iphone 8 plus is bigger, but for what counts, sounds like the X is bigger. I mean, if we aren't working towards getting more in a smaller package, then why is technology even going forward?

Are these numbers inaccurate?

No, im pretty sure the screen area on X is slightly smaller. Not talking about the physical dimension at all of the phone.

People really need to get some perspective. Preorders began less than 5 hours ago, at a time when practically no one is awake, and people are now waking up to find that it's already impossible to get a launch day delivery, and this is with people knowing that a more premium phone is just 6 weeks away.

We also have no idea what the supply was like. It's ridiculous and irrational to think that any conclusions can be drawn right now. People are just letting their preconceptions and personal opinions influence their interpretation.

Is this your first time getting a phone? At 30 minutes past midnight last year, some folks were getting the deliver week of two weeks later or a month from actual release date.

Everyone who wanted a phone on the release date stays up and goes through the pain of Apple having server issues etc.

So yes, at the moment, this is actually showing signs that more folks are just waiting for the X or simply underwhelmed with what Apple is trying to feed us

I pulled the numbers from https://www.engadget.com/2017/09/12/iphonex-iphone8-comparison/ and they look right from Apple.com.

So, again, with the numbers correct, the X is functionally bigger where it counts, yes?

Edit: someone explained it to me in another thread:

The display on the X is slightly wider than the regular sized 6/7/8, but not as wide as the plus sized models. It's taller than the regular sized iPhones, but most of this screen area is lost due to the notch, rounded corners and the home button bar swipe-up indicator. According to app design guidelines released by Apple, apps will basically see the X as a regular sized 4.7" iPhone. If you have apps that make use of the extra screen real estate on the plus sized iPhone... well... you won't get that on the X. Also, landscape mode looks pretty horrible in some cases on the X because of the notch and home button bar.

So it's a bit confusing but for me, since im on the IUP, if i hate it i can upgrade in 6 months.

You mean what Apple is selling you? They're not feeding you anything.

You're free to not buy if the product is not acceptable to you.

Have you thought about the possibility that Apple had plenty of stock? They will sell more 8 and 8+ units than the X.

It's a symptom of postmodern life in dysfunctional Western society.

"I'm am sooooo bored with the looks of my phone. Though I keep it in a caaaase, I just don't care for the appearance of the aluminum baaaaack." [said is snarky vocal fry tone of voice]
