That's fine with me. I'll end up keeping it for 3 -4 years. I've had my iPhone 6 for two and a half years and it's fine. I expect to have my iP6 for about another 9-10 months because of the expected difficulty in acquiring the new phone at release.

$1k? Yikes. At least they're not offering 32GB anymore. That storage size is barely adequate in 2017.

Hmm? I only just upgraded from a 16GB iPhone 6 to a 32GB iPhone 7. 32GB is plenty for me and probably many others. I don't install a tonne of apps, don't have a lot of music kept on the device (use streaming services) and don't take a whole bunch of photos either.

Just checked and still have 19GB free in fact..

Oh no! Your iPhone is OLD....

I would hope people not purchase the devices at that price. It's insane for something that has an annual refresh cycle.

Unfortunately, people will eagerly go into debt or use the various carrier financing (lease / lease to-own / etc) options which will maintain Apple's pricing.

Current pricing for a Samsung S8 64GB (half the memory) is 829 and they release a new one every year?

You're right. The $650 will still be the iPhone 7. Take a look at how they jacked up the prices on the MPB and maintained entry price point by still selling the older model.

Maybe. They certainly can do that, but the iPhone 7 is already $650. I would expect at least a modest price drop on it then, or maybe a minor spec bump. iPhone 7s maybe?

Looking forward, I don't think the annual release cycle is sustainable for much longer. There just isn't that much more to evolve in a smartphone anymore. There is of course still room for improvement, but that improvement is more technologically complicated and nuanced. I think the pace will have to slow down.

For the past few years, Apple seems to have been ok with spreading iPhone models across two generations. Selling the iPhone C when the iPhone 5S was the flagship. Selling the iPhone 5S when the iPhone 6 was the flagship. Selling the iPhone 6 when the iPhone 6S was the flagship.

Recently they have moved to selling iPhone across three generations. Selling the iPhone SE and iPhone 6S when the iPhone 7 is the flagship. I expect this trend to continue, but slow down even more where there is a major new flagship announced every other year instead of every year.

Yep, and that is the super long version. My ex loves his.

Dear Apple, As long as you keep offering a 64GB iPhone SE for $350 my response to a $1000+ iPhone: "have at it Hoss!" View attachment 699496
I thought they were $500? $400 for the 32gb SE.

16Gb is crazy talk, ;-)

16GB user here and it works fine for me. People have different needs.
  • I have 94 applications installed. This is more than I need really; I don't use most of them.
  • With an unlimited data plan, music, podcasts, radio, and video media is streamed--streaming libraries contain far more than I could ever sync anyway. And frankly I don't really enjoy watching TV/movies on a tiny screen anyway.
  • Photos, videos, and data backups go to the 50GB iCloud for 99c a month. This is far cheaper than bumping up in iPhone size, it is an off-site backup which protects me from data loss, and it propagates to my iPads and Mac which is super convenient.
I have no idea what anyone would do with 256GB, but I don't declare that it's wasted space. Like I said, we all have different needs.

Carrier subsidies are never coming back. Now you pay for the phone over 18 months on a payment plan.

Never say never - once unlimited data plans went away, people thought the same, they're never coming back. And look, a resurgence of unlimited data plans!

Apparently not as they have predicted large sales numbers. Don't forget those who are on the Apple upgrade programme and those that pay a monthly bill will probably not notice an increase as much as those of us who buy our phones outright. Apple are also rumoured to be releasing a 7s and 7s Plus so those who don't want to pay the higher price tag can get one of those.

But Apples upgrade programme isn't popular really outside the US and I'm not even sure it's available in all markets? In the UK it's still a case of getting the phone on the carrier network, and those carriers either subsidise the cost back to Apple or charge a lot for contracts, which is usually the case.
You'll be looking at £40 to £50 monthly contracts for the phone because Apple will not allow its phones to be discounted.

They'll be no shortage of these $1000 phones in kid's hands... a massively complex and powerful device doing little more than displaying video and posts showing them what else they are missing in life.

I wouldn't be surprised.
The S8 64GB is 749, the S8+ is 849 so I can see Apple charging right at $1K for 128GB iPhone 8 as long as there is only one screen size and it's the bigger screen. Still $1K is a lot for a phone.

People will buy it though as long as the monthly payment stays between $40-50.

It's going to have to have some pretty good features for me to consider it or it's going to have to be a one off design only for the anniversary and then next year phone goes back to the same design as the current 6/7 line but I don't see that. I think next year the design will be the anniversary design for their whole line up.

This equals 1.149€ for the "entry" model. That is just redic.

Remember when Apple devices evolved naturally? Now they slap a "Pro" on it to charge more for something that was simply an yearly update in the past

I see carriers having you put a 200- 300 down payment then the usual 32 dollars a month. I can handle that. All of you whiners can go back to Androidcentral.com and join in that circle jerk, lol..,
Why would you have to put 200-300 down? Is that an Apple thing? I think I only paid the tax when I bought my iPhone 6+

I bought my son a S8+ yesterday and all I paid was the tax on the phone when I upgraded his line. Granted walmart had $150 off the S8 or S8+ so the plus was $699.

I thought they were $500? $400 for the 32gb SE.
If you buy them directly from a prepaid carrier they are $100 off and regularly run sales that drop the price lower than that. Granted, these are CDMA carriers and the device is locked to that particular network, but if one is pleased with the carrier then there is money to be saved.

My wife and I both have 64GB SE's. Her's is on VirginMobile, mine is on BoostMobile (both services use the Sprint network). We paid $350 each no contract, no additional fees.

BoostMobile currently has the 128GB SE on sale for $260.

I think phones are already hugely over-priced so this is just absurd.

Maybe if we still had carrier subsidization it would make more sense but apparently that wasn't good enough for the greedy wireless companies and Apple.
