CBW user - IPhone 2g with Google Voice - SUCCESS!

Hello all.... I have been a 2g iphone user with CBW for about a year..(Sounds like a support group here, lol). I have the 30/month data package, originally a blackberry data package, but this has no bearing on it... Everything works fine and dandy, edge is oookay, but not great, especially for how often I use data. Like the rest of you, I am about to get a 3g, as the prices have dropped and my buddy is throwing me his 3g to move on to the 3gs. I want the 3g to work, but who knows if CBW will get there **** together, or even if when they do, that it will operate on the same 3G band as the iphone!. Alas...google voice

Google voice was the biggest biotch ever to get working. I'd say I had to go through about 4 different tech support people to get it working. All you have to do is.

1. Call Cincinnati bell tech support

2. Tell them you want conditional call forwarding
(this means, that when you are busy(1), when your phone is off(2), or when you do not answer (3), your calls will be forwarded to your google voice number...instead of forwarding it, like it regularly does to your CBW voicemail.

3. Make sure the person you talk to knows what this means...if not, try talking to somone else.

4. Give the tech guy/girl your google voice number, and they must manually input into the system to sucessfully forward your call.

5. Enjoy free transcription and emailed voicemails :)

Keep me updated on CBW and 3G!, glad I found this thread

iphone cincybell

recent purchased an iphone and unlocked it to put on cincybell! No complaints so far, edge network is alittle slower compared to att when using 3g. Setup was fairly simply using blackra1n.
Had trouble connecting to wifi at first, and had it working for awhile. Setup the mms messaging THANKS to whoever posted the cincybell setup! Thats working fine, then fixed my wifi connection, read about dlink routers and had to update the router. After that everything is up and running GREAT!!!

Edge network will get the job done, although you may not need it much depending on where you are, can always connect to wifi! As for the plan Im using with cincybell, I have a corporate discount
500 min
Unlimited data &text...the 14.99 plan WORKS perfectly fine
$46/month....
it was either droid eris with verizon at $65/monthly...with discount or
att iphone at 62/month... then did some searching to find iphone works on cincybell and does so fairly well..

Have not bought an unlocked iphone...YET...

Will my current Cincinnati Bell SIM card in my Motorola Razor v3i work in the iPhone or do I need to get a 3G SIM card from Cincy Bell first? Please advise!

Will my current Cincinnati Bell SIM card in my Motorola Razor v3i work in the iPhone or do I need to get a 3G SIM card from Cincy Bell first? Please advise!

I have a similar question:

I currently have a Blackberry 8120 that I've had for about a year. I would like to upgrade to a jailbroken iPhone to use with my Cincinnati Bell account. Do I need to upgrade my SIM card to 3G?

Thanks in advance.

I am a Cincinnati Bell customer and very satisfied with their service. They have been great to me. I got a Blackberry Curve 8320 last year for free and it works well. I did have one problem for which CB gave me a new one to fix (ended up being a faulty 8gig card, so they really did lose money on that one). I have all of my business things on CBell and so I can't move.

However, I really lust after a 3GS. It has just about everything I could possibly want. They told me that it would work well with their set up. Bully! But, now I am faced with the problem of finding an undamaged 3GS which is running 3.1.2. Looking all over eBay and finding lots of great phones from good dealers but running 3.1.3. Alas. I am just here to ask if anyone knows of a better place to find a good 3GS for around $450? I can always go to some big box and get one for $1000, but that is scarcely sporting. Thanks for any ideas. I am prepared to hear that eBay is the best choice, but I thought I would ask.

Please Help!! Clarification Needed...pleeeease!

Never mind

I got it now (duuhh) Thanks all!

iphone/Cincy Bell retard here again needing help

I was able to configure the MMS as BestMistake33 said to do...however when I go to Settings/Messages it does not give me an MMS On/Off option.
I assume there is MMS on this thing since I was able to configure the settings.

Now what do I do???

I currently have t-mobile and i'm looking to purchase an iphone but keep seeing t-mobile's 3g wont work with the iphone. Does CBW 3g work with the iphone??

Wifi only?

I have cincinnati bell and was looking to buy an iphone but do not have a data plan, only unlimited text and talk. Would i be able to use the internet only with wifi, or would i need to have a data plan to do anything internet related?

Yes, you can still use Wi-Fi without a data plan. Just make sure not to accidently use data, as Cincinnati Bell charges out the ass for data.

3G bands?

Ok, so I keep reading that the iPhone 3G is not capable of using 3G on CBW's 3G network. However I have a question about that. From what I read, CBW's 3G bands are 1700/2100 MHz. According to Apple, the 3G uses 850/1900/2100 MHz. I see 2100 MHz in common there. So my question is do you need both bands, the 1700 AND the 2100 MHz bands to operate correctly? Or has CBW since added the 2100 MHz band since the last person posted this, and it is now compatible. If anyone would care to answer, that would be awesome:). If they are compatible, I want to switch to a 3G sim ASAP. Even though EDGE is considerably faster on the iPhone than it was on my BlackBerry, it still leaves a little to be desired.

EDIT: Also, CBW is advertising 3G support for the Nexus One which has two radio versions, one with 900/1700/2100 MHz, and the other is the same bands as the iPhone 3G with 850/1900/2100 MHz. I'm not sure which version CBW is supporting, though, but I also see 2100MHz in common on both.

Let us know if 3G on CBW Works for your iPhone. This is an option i would love to get if possible!

I just got off the phone with CBW tech support asking the same question about the 3G network with the 3GS phone. Here is the answer. If you have an Apple 3GS and you want to use it on the Cincinnati Bell network, it will run like 2G (I.E. slow) UNLESS you have an unlocked T Mobile phone. The reason is that CBW works on 1700-2100 band and so does the T Mobile phone. So, the T Mobile unlocked phone will work as a 3GS phone on the CBW network.

I hope that made sense. The guy suggested I look at the box the phone came in to see what the band rating is. Best plan is to ask for a try before you buy use of the phone, put in your sim card and set it up to go on CBW.

Otherwise, the guy suggested that you can use your iPhone with the WiFi only. Hope that helps.

Oh, and I am paying $20/mo for the CBW data plan. The do have a bundle for that and so ask about it. They won't beg you to take it, you know.

Alright, well I just got back from my nearest CBW store, since I was by it anyway. Their answer was that it wouldn't work, but their explanation didn't seem to make sense, and sounded more like a "we're not supposed to support that phone" kind of answer. They did say that their 3G network supports both 1700 and 2100 MHz, and you do not need both of them to work. So theoretically, this is possible unless I am missing something. Their explanation for it not working was that "when you unlock a phone, it is not completely unlocked. There is a 50/50 chance that the internet is going to work at all on it, and 3G on the iPhone on our network isn't going to happen." The last part of that is what made me think that she just didn't want to give a straight answer. I'm going to call CBW support and see where we get with that.

Well, I have a real good relationship with the guys at my CBW store and I think we can talk more frankly than with someone they didn't know well. I was also given a boogie woogie answer from a new guy who did not know me so I think people are getting a bit hinkier than they used to be.

I think the phone when unlocked is unlocked, but I believe it is the frequency of the individual phone vs. the frequency that they run on at CBW is the problem. BUT I am not an electrical engineer and could actually be wrong (imagine that).

You might want to take a look at some local forums, people are pretty stratightforward on them. I was just talking to a guy who is using an iPhone on CBW and loves the phone but says that it's a tap slow on his usual cell mode, he runs off wi-fi as often as possible and is very pleased with that.

There are a couple of good Cincinnati/Ohio forums out there, www.urbanohio.com and one with www.city-data.com are two I like. I asked about the iPhone and they were very open with me.

Great work you two! I am happy with the Edge speed, it works pretty well. But who wouldnt like to get 3G speed? I will have to get myself a 3G sim card and see if it works. Keep those updates coming!

ok i'm just double checking that I am going to be doing this correctly.(i could be completely wrong) I have my iphone 3g on 3.1.2 firmware from what I understand I would be able to download blackra1n and unlock the phone simply drop in a cincinnati bell sim card and poof iphone on cincinnati bell. Of course after configuring the MMS that will work too. Now I did find all this info http://www.modmyi.com/wiki/index.php?title=Carrier_APN_Settings&oldid=12241#Cincinnati_Bell_Wireless in regards to settings for the phone. Do i need to do that or will the sim card for cinbell configure it all automatically minus the MMS.

Thanks in advance guys.

Download Blackra1n. Jailbreak your phone, and then add the source “http://blackra1n.com” (minus the quotes) in Cydia to get Blacksn0w. Then your phone will be able to work with Cincinnati Bell.
Then add the APN settings from the site you linked to.

So i was able to successfully jailbreak and unlock my 3g with the firmware 3.1.2. The current plan my friend is on (who is getting the phone) is a blackberry data plan. I'm able to get the phone into mms to try to send the picture but it never completely sends the picture, nor is it able to connect to the internet without wifi. Are these problems a result of the blackberry date plan or am I doing something wrong?

Please help the future of my iphone 4 depends on it.
Thanks again

iphone and out of town

I've read and been told that the unlocked iphone wont work unless it is in cincinnati bell's local network, as in it wont work on cinbell USA or where the phone would be roaming. I go to school outside of Cincinnati bell's local network and I don't want to buy the iphone if it wont work at my school. Does anyone know if this is still true since cincinnati bell is now 3g and has an android phone out now?

I know from personal experience that the iPhone 3G and 3GS both work on CinBell USA and Roam. I live in Indianapolis and am well out of Cincy Local. I cannot comment on the actual 3G data b/c i dont have the 3G simcard, but Edge Data works just fine.

coverage area

Thanks for the insight, but Indinapolis is still considered in cincy bell's 3g local area if you look at the coverage map on their website. Has anyone used their i-phone in lexington or eastern ky where its only 2g national coverage. If so, have you had any problems?

Yes, Cincinnati works in out of state area's. In Nebraska it works. So i do not think you will have a problem. I do not know if the 3g network will work as i do not have the 3g sim card.
Works great on Edge as most of the state here is edge anyway. :D

PS it show Cincinnati Bell USA in Network.

Phone is 3.1.3 with modem 5.12.01.

Update

I just got my 3G SIM card, and put it in my 3GS. When I turn on 3G first time, it killed my service = No Service. I kept 3G enabled and shut off phone, restart to find I have service again, edge is present an working but still no 3G connection.
Where to go from here?

3GS on 3.1.3 jailbroken via spirit unlocked with ultrasn0w.
