Oh brilliant! Thanks for that, gives me confidence they'll have it when i arrive tomorrow (about 11am!). Did they give the option to just take the box and activate at home? I guess not, because the price varies on the plan, so they probably want to set you up there, but it would be awesome to do it myself.

It's all done in store - you choose a price plan, they sign you up for the contract, activate, etc. Once you're at the front of the queue they take you to a computer and do it for you. This takes a while because they need to run all the credit checks. If I were you, I'd have an idea about what price plan you need beforehand, since you're a bit 'on the spot' otherwise. You walk out with a phone that is fully functional (ie, no need to even sync it with iTunes ever - unless you want music on it or something :p).

(for the geeks out there, the Macs were running VMWare Fusion, since the O2 activation website isn't Safari compatible!)

Also, I think the Apple people have been told that customers must open their own phones (since we get pleasure from the unboxing experience?). Mine started to open it, and then realised and passed it to me. She even asked me to pop open the SIM slot!

Mine was from O2 and I walked out with it still shrink wrapped in the box. Why are Apple opening them? :(

I got a 16GB White from my local Apple shop yesterday. They opened it so that it could be activated and I could leave the shop with a working phone.

The whole process took about 20 mins - no queuing at all.

I had a very good experience at the Apple shop.

So I'm still not clear on the difference between Apple retail stores and O2 stores...

Why does the retail store have to open the box up, but the O2 stores don't?

Is that actually what happens?

I'm thinking of going tomorrow morning to regent street, would any of you suggest I get there for 9 or would a bit later be ok?

Anyone been to an O2 shop today?

They haven't updated their stock list this morning and today is pretty much the last day I can make an effort to buy one before I go away (and quite possibly before I decide I might as well wait for a 32GB version or buy a Wii or generally do something else with my spare cash...)

The apple store in trafford centre have got LOADSSSSS in.

I have seen many people with O2 bags with iphone in them. Not sure if they got any in now though.

Why dont you just phone the store? I phoned my local 02 store every day and finaly they said they had stock.. then i got one.

For those still waiting and can't afford to waste any more time rushing to O2 stores (!), stick two fingers up to O2's sales figures and just give Carphone Whorehouse a call - they will deliver it to you and save you the hassle.

P.S. I don't work for CPW, I've just had a couple of their sales staff call me back yesterday saying "we're ready to take orders for 16GBs now".

My local O2 store decided to close a couple of days after the initial launch - so I no longer pass one on the way to work. I could go to a store near the office, but there are quite a few to choose from and it would take too long to visit or even call them all, and my boss would be "unhappy".

I thought there ought to be enough people on here that someone would know whether or not there was any new stock today... if there is, I'll make the effort to check local stores, if not, no problem...

Phoning the store is much quicker than visiting them, why dont you just do that? Im sure your boss will not mind if you phone them on your break.. or just phone them when there not looking.

From what I have heard CPW have a reputation of messing people around which is why I avoided them.

Yeah I called the local store, they just had delivery, shot down and was in and out of the store in under 20 minutes.

Well quite alot of the stores seem to have stock. i might not even bother. ive visited the speke store on several occassions now and always get the same answer while they are wandering around there own store with a blank expression on there face, ignoring the phone ringing in the background :(.....

Did the O2 re-stock today include any 16Gb's? The website seems to suggest not.

No 16GB stock in the London stores that I just tried...

Could easily have walked with an 8GB one though - minimal or no queues in the Oxford street branches (and the one queue I did see dissipated as soon as a customer informed them that there were no 16's - which the staff were too busy to do).

Lol, that O2 store is awful, because its quite large you might be forgiven that it might have loads of stock, but it doesnt. Not worth the hassle, at the moment I have seen during the week that O2 and CPW are supposed to be getting a big shipment tommorow as I have seen this mentioned on their websites, but O2 took it off within a day of showing it.

I notice how the bit about the online store being open "soon after" the July 25th delivery has been removed from the O2 page. It now just says "we'll let you know" re the online store. Does this mean the delivery on the 25th isn't going to be as big as they thought?

big batch of iphones seems to have made its way to the UK today. The O2 stock/store list is fairly long, and the CPW I went to just now had lots of 8GB and a few 16's. Picked up a black 16gb after waiting since launch, but the CPW staff are really pushy re. their insurance. Just stay firm and say no.

In and out of my local O2 store in East Grinstead in about 30 mins with my black 16GB one. The process took a long time as their systems were very slow. The sales assistant said that many stores had received substantial stock today (I assume the stock that was supposed to come in on Friday - it came a day early) and that a lot of people must be using the purchasing system.

There was no queue and this particular store hasn't had stock since launch day!

Had to wait almost 2 weeks but it was no hassle at all so I managed to avoid the mayhem.

I ordered from Carphone warehouse.

It's been a while, so I phoned them this morning because nothing was happening. Then they told me something went wrong with the order due to their system, and they had to cancel it. They didn't even bother to tell me.

Very annoying. I think I will just sit back and wait. I'm fed up with phoning 5 different stores every morning. I don't have time to wait first in line at 8am in the morning. I will just wait for 02 to get some in and order online. wow, I'm so bitter.

Just got back from my local (King's Lynn) O2 store with a shiny new 16GB iPhone - last one in the shop. FWIW, they said they had 5 16GBs delivered today, and "more" 8GBs. That was their first delivery of iPhones since they ran out on launch day.

My local O2 (Bridlington) is listed as having stock today, but when I rang they said they haven't received any :(

I think some stores get deliveries in the early afternoon. Also, they have to do some process to put the stock into their system, which can take a while and while that's going on, they claim not to have stock. So call them again. I had the same earlier this week with Tunbridge Wells O2 store. They said they had no stock despite their store being on the list. That was at around 10:30am. I called again just before 11 and they told me they had just gotten their stock in. By the time I got there at 11:45, they were sold out!

And my friend just went to my local store (where I got my 16GB at lunch time) and they've also just sold out.
