Next time I'll get two frigging cans with a string.

Quote of the week. :)

I agree entirely: anyone think that enough people badger them O2 might start to allow upgrades at Apple? It can't be that hard to do....

Sorry to say that Apple is penalizing the UK and totally screwing the dedicated people that got the 1st gen. We jumped in first and now we are screwed because we can not upgrade at the Apple stores (and they are keeping all the stock). I'm rather pissed off for the lack of loyalty to us morons that spread the word in the first place. Then again I'm an idiot for even caring about the stuff. Next time I'll get two frigging cans with a string.

Very true, didn't you read the iPhone 3G advert line "The Phone you have waited for" ... should rather say "The Phone you should have been waiting for in the first place you moron" :)

Went into my local CPW store in Oxford today to ask the usual questions.

As expected, no stock, don't know when stock might arrive and no white phones before Sep.

So I asked if they could call when some come in and the guy produced a book from under the counter, a book full of names and numbers, dozens of sad souls etched in blue biro, all chasing the apple slab.

"How many will you get, when they do come?" I asked.
"Perhaps a dozen."

Must be a deliberate stratagem to keep demand pent-up until Xmas...

You are right and then for the Xmas shopping OHHHHH we have plemti of phones now in every color and every prices !!!

Got my 16Go black on Friday at CPW in Clapham Junction (London) arrive there at 07H00 was the 1st in line, when next door the O2 store had about 50 people in queue LOL

Enter first in the shop at 08H02 they had only 3 16Go and Black only, waited for activation until 11H !!!!! (as their O2 upgrade system was down).

When I left the store the queue was over and ask the CPW people if they had any phone left they say yes 3 8Go so on the way to the bus went to see the people at the O2 store, they were screaming as they been queuing for hours to be told they didn't had any left.

Told them that I just came out of the CPW and they had 3 phone left they all looked at me like, who the **** are you and continue to scream at O2 security guard, so I just left telling my self what ever !!!!

Anyway, Once home and plugged the iPhone to iTunes another activation which I was lucky worked straight away.

Then add the problem of the yellow screen but after the update/restore it went back to normal.

That's so sad...we, the first gen people, who had to stand all the ridicule by the WinMob and Symbian people to buy an EDGE phone while they had their GPS-HDSPA-DivX-Overtuned-plastic-8M-camera-monsters, ridiculed for buying a cotract phone for £270 and more, we that spread the love of the iPhone by letting everybody put their finger prints on it, probably converting more people into potential buyers then any Apple PR campaign ever could, we that had been ridiculed as posers, apple fanboys, nerds, tossers, and what not for buying an :apple: Phone,

We now stand in the rain. We are like warriors who are forgotten after the war has been fought and won....

We should organize therapy meetings. "Hi I am Bob and a 1st Gen person and wanted to upgrade" "Hi Bob"

:)

I've sent an email to O2 asking if they will just cancel my old contract if I get a new contract from Apple under the same name as my old contract. If they can agree to do that, I can just mozy on into an Apple store, pick up the iPhone of my choice, and then cancel my old iPhone contract with O2 separately. Of course CS will say this can't be done, just like very O2 rep I've spoken to so far.

But I intend to keep at it till they give in. I think they should adopt this procedure widely. Anyone have an email address for Matthew Key (O2's CEO). He seems like a 'with-it' kind of guy and I think he would understand the situation a little bit better than your average O2 Customer Service Rep.

Oh and another thing - you guys have nice O2 stores, mine is saying it will take 3-4 weeks, which doesn't correlate to anything anyone else is saying so I'm not sure what game they are playing at my local store. I don't trust them at all anymore. Every other store I've called has gone the other way and said 'we don't know', which I prefer. At least I can call them every day to ask without being told that I should just wait 3-4 weeks.

Its worth noting that you need plenty of time. I had a crappy experience when visiting the Apple Store "flagship" London Store yesterday (14th July) Open 10am-9pm

1) Arrive 6pm

2) Someone is at the entrance all smiley - "Welcome to Apple store - how are you today" nice I thought..

3) We trench upstairs to see the 3G iPhone queue. A rude apple assistant (apparently called "Help" by name) tells us that the queue is closed today. 3 hours before closing time!

4) "no - we have loads of stock, but we cant sell them to you, we are closing in 3 hours" says Help.

5) Leave empty handed very disappointed with the whole thing.

Awesome post! I can imagine that as a cinematic-style voice over over slow motion black and white footage of first-gen iPhone owners... Apple should use that as the iPhone advert!

I encountered the exact same situation yesterday. I called the Regent Store several times that day and consistently got these answers (after sitting in a phone queue for 20-30 minutes each time)

Stock: Plenty
Wait time: 1 Hour

So I was not very happy when I arrived at the store at 6 pm like you and was told the queue was closed for the day.

This morning I arrived at the Regent Store at 8:15 AM and was 5th in a line of about 40 when the store opened 45 minutes later. I was in and out with my new black 16gb in exactly 1 hour and this was with a store clerk who had just got back from holiday and had not done any activiations yet.

Another note: if you are already an o2 contract customer you can start a new contract at the Apple store but Apple won't touch anything on your current one. So you will still have to keep your current contract going unless you cancel it with o2 and then you will have to pay the rest of it off anyway.

Isn't the ceo now Ronan Dunn?

I can see why they're doing it as they'll make more money out of new contracts than they will out of pre-existing ones (if you divide the preice of the handset over the duration of the contract).

but it still sucks. I can't upgrade just beacuse they keep the phones in the apple stores and out of O2 and CPW.

big :( to :apple:

Indeed he is... Anyone got an email for him. Its almost like writing to steve and his email address seems to be widely published. But this is purely an O2 matter, not Apple.

Fireplace - I don't think the value of the contract is a big point for O2 to worry about. They've said they'd upgrade us, so if I upgrade in an O2 store or Apple Store, it really shouldn't make a difference.

Does this sound right - o2

Did a quick search but couldn't find the answer so thought i would see if this sounds right?

Queued up on friday with a friend, numbers 2 and 3 in queue. Around 8am Sales guy puts my 16gb upgrade through in 5 minutes, i have a new iPhone.

Another sales guy goes to put my friends 16gb upgrade through seconds later, system crashed, then we found out no more upgrades today. They subsequently put his 16gb aside for him and said they will process asap.

It is now tuesday and they are saying that they still cannot upgrade him due to the systems still being down and they don't know when they will be able too.

Does this sound right or have the shop sold his phone and they are waiting for more stock to arrive before fulfilling his order. He has spoken to o2 cust serv and they said that there is no reason that they couldn't upgrade him now.

Lots of misinformation around and if new stock is arriving in the next couple of days and people still cannot upgrade, it's going to turn into even more of a nightmare for everyone.

Any info greatly appreciated as I do feel for my friend considering he was actually before me in the queue, it's just my sales guy put it through quicker!

Thanks

O2 Online Back in Stock - but maybe not publicly

A friend of mine got an email to say his iPhone 3G (ordered last Monday) has been shipped today, with tracking details etc. Prior to that, he received an email saying the estimated delivery date would be Friday 18th.
That means O2 Online have them back in stock and are prioritising orders to those who managed to order online last Monday.
O2 stores would be expected to receive stock either tomorrow or Friday according to someone I know at O2, although that is the unofficial eta.

actually you shouldn't be able to upgrade until next may as you signed an 18 month contract. SO they are doing you a favour. install 2.0 software and enjoy - wait until things calm down, walk in and get an upgrade. whats the hurry.

actually o2's systems are the main problem
they have been crap for years - i remember it taking me 3 weeks to cancel a contract with them because 'their system was down' every time i went in.

O2's computer says NOOOOO.

I'm with you on this one. Us early adopters have been allowed to upgrade early and the wait of a few weeks is really of no consequence. I tried to get a phone on the Friday and despite queuing twice (and being at the front of one queue), I went home empty handed. However, the version 2 firmware has given my phone a new lease of life and am almost tempted to hang on to it... almost.

Suggest people try the Comic Touch application. Costs 2.99, will happily download over EDGE and is great fun.

If nothing else it will pass the time until the phones come in stock!

For folks in Scotland, Glasgow Braehead, Glasgow Fort, Paisley, Clydebank and Falkirk stores all sold out. Paisley said a week on Friday but the rest all expect delivieries soon, answer was always call back tomorrow.

just received my tracking number so they must have them back in stock, does anyone know whether it is always next day or just when they feel like it?

O2 stores now have (limited) stock

Good luck folks.

O2 retail stock update

Thank you for your interest in iPhone 3G. We are experiencing unprecedented demand for the device and whilst we are confident that all customers who want iPhone 3G will get one by the end of this summer, initial supply is limited and will be for some weeks. Here is what you need to know:

We are working closely with Apple to get additional iPhone 3Gs. These will be coming in on a weekly basis. We'll keep you posted on specific details by updating this web page daily.

We are currently out of stock of iPhone 3Gs via our on-line store, customer services but have limited availability in O2 retail stores as at opening time Wednesday 16th July.

The list below shows all the O2 stores that have Apple iPhone 3G stock as at opening time Wednesday 16th July.

This list will be updated daily.

The amount of 8GB stock these stores have is still very limited and will therefore sell out quickly.

There is no stock of 16GB version.

We are expecting considerably more stock from Friday 25th July onwards, including a limited amount of 16GB stock.

Soon after this date we are hoping to open our online upgrade shop for existing customers and online shop for new customers.

No 16gb iPhone 3G from O2 in the UK until 25th of July

Bad news everyone, O2 have failed to secure a shipment of any 16gb 3G iPhone's until as late as the 25th of July, and even then numbers will be only limited.

http://shop.o2.co.uk/info/?cm_re=HeroBanner-_-Shop-_-iphone3GLaunch

There is no stock of 16GB version.

...

We are expecting considerably more stock from Friday 25th July onwards, including a limited amount of 16GB stock.

Thanks to O2, in the UK at least, this has been the single worst launch of an Apple product ever.
