How do you know that's the case?
Given the level of competence of British management, I can almost hear this conversation taking place one month ago:
Because:

I used to write a lot about mobile phone and wireless technologies I was also involved in a number of projects and events sponsored by companies, such as O2. Although Im not involved in that area, Ive kept a lot of contacts as I made a lot of friends and maintained links on a social level
plus, I never know when I might need them again!
As such, Im able to get people to talk off the record to me.
If you check my previous posts, I did warn out that UK stocks were lower than had been requested a week before the launch. I did this because I had been warned that stock was lower than requested.
In the week of launch came the bombshell
I started hearing the actual numbers. These came from a number of sources.
Before anyone asks, I will not post exact details it was given off the record and Im not going to break a professional confidence to impress strangers on a forum or to persuade them that Im telling the truth.
I did think people might be interested in the fact that they were not going to be a few dozen handsets per store and although I knew most people (myself included) were going to be disappointed, I thought some people who may have decided no biggie, Ill pop along late on Friday as I cant be bothered to queue in the morning would have liked a more accurate picture of the situation.

I used to freelance for a couple of Mac magazine and was a staff member on another. I would say I know Apple as a company pretty well although I met some lovely people, for every sound vice-president I interviewed, there was another that wasnt
in fact as executives go, I found more than a few at Apple to be amongst the most unpleasant and arrogant people Ive ever had had to deal with professionally. This view was pretty much echoed by most companies that had dealings or worked with Apple.
With some review kit, there was one unit to be shared amongst four different magazines and sometimes it was easier getting a reseller to loan you one. As for the press office, it was easier to get blood out of a stone than it was to get information
or even a no comment.
I love the products, but I sure as hell dont miss having to deal with the company.
If you dont believe me, thats cool we can always go with Tch shocking British management, isnt Apple perfect? line.
