By the time you have added apple care on top (absolutely necessary for a 1st gen folding phone) plus a case its in vision pro territory! (Ok, not quite but a similar problem for most people)

iPad mini is lot cheaper. For that price I can get an iPhone PM and iPad Pro. It will be niche device.
In due time, it will not be a niche device. The price needs to come down for greater adoption, but a larger screen that fits in your front pocket is going to be desired by the masses.

If it can replace an iPad Mini, with the same pencil support and battery life, then it can be worth the price. If it's just an expensive iPhone that costs as much as a MacBook Pro, that's a different story...

While not nearly as pocketable as iPhone Ultra, a $650 iPad mini w/ cellular could be interesting. 🤪
A quick show of hands: who here uses an iPad mini w/ cellular as their only "phone?"

Anyway, I would be shocked if iPhone Ultra didn't offer Pencil support. I would not be shocked if iPhone Ultra was only compatible with Pencil Ultra (staring at $199). If Ultra doesn't offer Pencil support in v1, it will likely do so in v2. They know early adopters will jump on v1, with or without Pencil support. Holding Pencil support back for Ultra v2, ensures they capture those who sat out v1, while also grabbing those v1 early adopters who were hoping for Pencil support. Apple Economics 101 is alive and well.

I'm ready! Not too worried about anything other than the aspect ratio when the device is opened. If I can get an iPad mini size/ratio in an iPhone foldable then I'm in.

I would not expect pencil support due to thin glass. Maybe in a future generation they'll figure it out, but launching with pencil support just adds one extra complexity to the situation.

Also, there would be no way to charge a pencil with this form factor.

What is the point of this device other than Apple wanting to create some premium tier where they can push iPhone prices up? Has Samsung or anyone else had a lot of success with these types of phones?

But, but...Apple told us that Face ID is so much more secure than Touch ID!
Face ID is not really an option for this form factor:
  • Either cram two set of Face ID HW inside the camera bump — one for the external screen, another for the internal screen. Thickness-wise that might fit as they were able to fit it inside iPhone Air. It would add weight (make camera bump wider) and force the internal Face ID cutout in a strange position that might be hard to accommodate in UI.
  • Or compromise UX by only having Face ID on the outside:
    • Requires you to wait for ID before unfolding the phone, and
    • Turn the phone around every time you need to authenticate while having the phone unfolded
Fingerprint reader is a simpler solution and probably a better UX.

I really want this device but without Face ID it’s a hard no. Maybe will wait for the second or third generation.

what about iPhone Air? a colossal failure.

pro max has a 6.9'' screen.isnt that big enough?
I am a photographer and 6.9" is still a little small for my preference to show clients my work. I wish for a little bigger but not iPad mini size... The iPhone Ultra might be the right one but I know the cameras are going to be limited.

if its a phone that is a phone, tablet, and if hooked to the right doc a mac running mac os it still wont be worth the money but its a must have especially when its used and prices come down to sane levels when you aren't paying apple directly. If all it does is become and ipad then its a joke and can go the way of the cube.

Time will tell but I'm not so sure it will become more mainstream. It's going to be thicker when closed than an iPhone pro and unfolding it to use will often be harder when moving about and certainly when driving with a phone mount to use the maps. Of course an extra screen on the outside helps with some of that but at the cost of yet more thickness. Some improved tech might help it thin up some but then that very same new tech will make the standard iPhone pro either thinner or have a better battery. I'm sure there's a market for this foldable phone but I doubt it will remotely rival the market for the iPhone pro.

At first glance, this wouldn't replace my iPad, let alone my MBA. So I'm not sure why I would pay a hefty premium for a device that's just the iPhone in a different form factor. Maybe Apple will make a compelling case when it's announced. I would need to see multiple examples of things that I can't do well or at all with a traditional form factor.

Sounds about right, $2,000.00, so the cost of a low end MacBook Pro. Definitely not for me. I dislike those dimensions and see no reason to move from the Pro series.

It was recently rumored that the foldable iPhone will be named iPhone Ultra. Apple already uses Ultra branding for the Apple Watch Ultra, CarPlay Ultra, and the M1 Ultra, M2 Ultra, and M3 Ultra series of chips for the Mac Studio.
No, not Ultra. There is absolutely no association of Ultra with what will be the most distinctive change in the iPhone lineup so far. Pixel Fold, Galaxy Fold, … iPhone Ultra? Huh?

“Neo mini”? No. Too bad but Neo is now reserved for “low cost” of which the Fold will be the exact opposite.

“Fold” was technically wrong anyway because the first thing you do when using it is not to fold it but the opposite. Should be the “iPhone Unfold”

People want bigger phones every year, meanwhile I want smaller phones and smaller iPads.

Double the cost of a Pro iPhone is crazy for a product that I'd argue is a worse user experience than a smaller phone, but what do I know. 😛
You can argue all you want about the supposedly worse experience of bigger devices, unfortunately for you and the crowd that like small devices, it is a niche opinion, notice no one has to defend the bigger devices, more people want them.

I think only 3 people in the US have bought an iPhone with 2TB of storage...
I have 256GB on my 17 Pro Max for $1199, and IF I run out of space, it goes in my 2TB iCloud for $10 a month...
This article make it look like the iPhone ultra will be too expensive and it's not realistic.
If you think that 90% of the population sees smart phones basically as an extension of their bodies, the price is not that expensive. People stop going out to dinner and movies or getting expensive clothes to own a flagship phone instead.
The high price is irrelevant.. People will pay anything to get one and it will shift the foldable market for all the others as well.
Unfortunately you are correct, but i do not agree the things people will miss just to get a top of the line phone, but i have seen it plenty of times.

Good luck with those sales globally… including taxes and exchange rate protections in many countries the price will be closer to $2700 USD and even over $3000 in several countries.
That has never stop them before, there is always people with money that "have to have the Latest", i don't think price will slow dawn the adoption, is not like the "Iglasses"

Either way, I will probably be buying one no matter how stupid expensive it's gonna be. I mean, I did pay over 4000 Euros for the Vision Pro when it came out in Germany.

For me this kind of bridges the gap between iPhone and iPad, since I'll be able to basically have the best of both worlds on the go. Absolutely a plus for me.

I currently have the iPhone Air, and I'm really struggling with battery life, and I got way too little storage (256GB), probably gonna with 1 or 2TB with the iPhone Ultra.
