Hi I paid in full for a iPhone 6s + AT&T on the Apple Store to ship. I did not know about the iPhone upgrade program at the time of purchase. Do you think it would be possible to return the iPhone at the Apple Store and buy the same iPhone I returned back on the iPhone upgrade plan? I am not sure the AT&T full price iPhone is the same as the unlocked that is offered with the iPhone upgrade program?

Yes you can do that. By the iPhone upgrade program total cost is more than At&t full price because it includes the apple care+ as well.

I got the impression this is an apple thing not a carrier thing cause the phone is unlocked

So you get the phone at Apple not a carrier

I've got similar deal with 02 carrier in UK. £64 a month for phone and 30gb data. In one year they will give you the next model for "free" if you return your old phone. The deal also includes insurance.

I have a Verizon iPhone 6, 128gb and I'm wondering how the upgrade program works for the new phones? I'm guessing I have to trade in my current phone to Apple to get the upgrade which is monthly. But what does that mean for like my 2 year contract with Verizon? Could someone shed some light on this for me?

You don't have to trade in your current phone as you are paying full price for the new phone (over 24 months). Everyone is so eager to give up their phones. Your contract should not have any effect on doing the upgrade program through Apple.
If you want to order your new phone from Verizon then they may have options where you can trade in your existing phone depending on what type of plan you are on.

Does anyone know what Social Security Number they will require? For me, I am on my Dad's AT&T account, but an authorized user. Will I need his social security number? My reservation email I received from apple under the Frequently Asked Questions section, says Authorized Users on the account can pick up the phone.

In my case the account is in my wife's name but I'm giving them my info since technically I'm buying the phone.

I believe it's the SSN of the primary account holder.

It has to be the SSN of the purchaser. Whoever is signing the loan agreement is the one who is responsible for this purchase.

Have you confirmed this with Apple? I know that's how a normal loan would work, but since this is tied to an account (AT&T), I don't want any surprises on Sept. 25th.

The iPhone UP is not tied to a carrier, it is simply assigned to a carrier for activation. You're technically buying the unlocked phone full price with AC+ and having it financed over 24 months interest free. Since the person buying the phone has to physically sign an agreement then only the person present at the store is authorized to do so.

Appreciate your insight!

I am coming into this late but read a few of the earlier posts. My math shows that that this plan is 0 apr for 2yrs with the option to start over every year with a new phone. So you have just paid around $400 to use the phone each year.

So the question is do the iPhones lose $400 in value each year.

They do not. A "mint" condition 64gb iPhone 6 can sell for $500-$550, that cost approx. $800 after taxes, so it lost $250-$300 in a year.

I don't imagine that they do at this point, but with all of these payment plans being implemented I can see the value dropping a bit over the next year. I paid $750 + tax for my 64GB 6, right now it seems like the going rate on Swappa is right around $500 which is roughly a $300 loss. The $400 price is certainly worth the peace of mind of knowing you have AppleCare+ and that you have a certain way to trade up to the iPhone 7 next year. No private sales involved!

May have answered my own question. My 6+ was $849 new now worth $550 is on eBay. So they are losing $300 in value but eBay fees cost near 12% so $550 x 12% = $66.00. So I lose $34 bucks. That is worth it not to have to deal with the eBay hassle.

Agreed!

Do we have a definitive answer on if we will have to pay the tax on the phone up front or at all when using the Upgrade Program?

Who actually sells on eBay. I know some people do, but I do not know these people haha. Swappa or craigslist!

I remember reading earlier in the thread that a credit check wouldn't be required, but just came across this on the Apple website.

"
Your personal information and credit card.
You will be asked to provide your Social Security number and date of birth for a credit check. You will also need a valid U.S. personal credit card. Debit cards and prepaid cards are not accepted."

I also spoke with s rep that told me that the only thing needed is a valid credit card with 3 months of installments. Everyone gives different information

I'm more inclined to believe that this will definitely be the case so it's best to take the payment times 3 and have that in your account on the 25th.
