While waiting to get through I tried the same.... volume up, volume down and then press/hold side button.
All it does is keep rebooting.

what am I missing?

I called att and she forced an activation, meaning now my old phone is no longer activated and I can't get through with the X...
what a bummer!
While you wait, take the SIM from your iPhone X and it will work in your old phone.

Just got off the phone with AT&T and she said that she just got an e-mail that it's an "Apple issue", and to just try every 30 min until it goes through...

I was able to go onto AT&T's website, confirm the IMEI & ICCID numbers they had matched what's on my iPhone X's box, and activate the device on their website.

Unfortunately, it made no difference on the iPhone X. Restarting, auto-setup, manual-setup, iTunes setup... nothing works. Sometimes I get as far as it confirming my number. But eventually, I'm back at the "Could Not Activate iPhone" screen. Arrgh.

How long must I wait before I can animate poop to match my expressions?

I have to commend the guy that posted they wanted to give us the full anniversary experience from the original iPhone release lol.

So do we know yet if it's an Apple server thing or an ATT thing this time? Or both?

I believe that. AT&T said my phone shows activated on their end. I know my old one is deactivated. Think this is an Apple issue.

I was suspicious it might be an Apple issue. Especially, since I was able to quickly & easily activate the phone through AT&T's website.

I had a senior level Apple person on the line at the same time with a senior level ATT. ATT admitted they have a "known issue" and were trying to fix it. ATT said they would call me tomorrow.

Tomorrow?!?!?

There are 2 distinct "Activations" that have to happen: 1 with Apple and their Activation servers and 1 with AT&T to activate the new SIM and deactivate the old SIM.

If you have AT&T force the activation of your new iPhone X, it will deactivate your old SIM. If you are still waiting for Apple Activation, you can take your newly activated SIM and put it into your old phone and use that until the server loads drop.

Tomorrow?!?!? This better not take that long!

So has anybody who initially had trouble gotten through? Or is it either "I got through in 30 seconds" or "I can't get through"

Apple confirmed to me it was an Apple issue and recommended NOT having AT&T manually activate over the phone because this would cause my old iPhone 7 to deactivate but the new X not be able to properly activate on Apple servers and be usable.

I was told to wait and given a free case so I guess there's that

Funny how there's not continuity with different people at apple.

The guy I just spoke with at apple said for ATT it's just a server overload happening with all the activations and having ATT do a manual activate, shutting of your old phone will make no difference. It's just like preorder, when you get in, you will be activated.
They did say verizon was having serious issue with their system, but att is just overloaded with the influx of activations.

He said just keep trying, hit "try again" and occasionally reboot to get a new cell connection.

While on hold with apple I did a recovery mode software update, thanks to the help here. :)
At least I'll be ready for a restore from my mac once I get through to activate.

I also had a senior level person at Apple tell me that it's a known issue and that Apple will call me tomorrow as well. She didn't say if the issue was with AT&T or Apple though. This is totally ridiculous.
