I just joined this forum because of the issues with now my second iPhone x ,the speaker distorts and vibrates on speaker phone during calls from about 3/4 volume till max ,the earpiece speaker does the same thing ,this is my second phone and I think number 2 might be worst ,I've talked to 6-7 apple so called tech people ,only one of them has slightly any knowledge of this issue ,I also tested several iPhones at the Apple Store they all did it . my iPhone 6 had better sound quality ,I'm so aggravated I almost threw the phone out the window as I was driving . the speaker sound blown and or being used beyond its limits ,basically its a cheap speaker. 1100$ ,is should be crystal clear .

My earpiece speaker basically stopped working. It sounds super muffled and the crackle is still there. If i cover up the bottom speaker I cant really hear anything.

Yes absoluty all the iPhones x i tested have the issue... i think the solution will be the iphone XI...

I came to this thread day before yesterday, and ran all the test (by playing different suggested music and ringtones) mentioned by members.
At this point I am not sure weather my device really suffer from this issue, when I played trailers on youtube, they were very loud and clear and so were the advertisements. I played various songs in itunes and 95% of the time it was ok, until very high frequency is played.
I checked with "slow rise" ringtone, it was negligible, I really have to get in the room with pin drop silence and then listen to the sound to acknowledge any distortion.
I checked it on youtube by playing these tracks and here are my findings:-
Adele skyfall- Nothing noticeable, played perfectly
silence marshmello- only between 10-20 seconds it was evident, prolly because of high frequency, played same track on ipad and macbook air and they both crackled at the same above mentioned time.
bearson one step at a time- between 5-10 seconds, and then played perfectly
unfaithful rihanna- very slight hint of crackle nothing horrible, but I found same crackle on my ipad and macbook air. So it must be song, I guess.
slide calvin harris-starting 12 seconds, it was evident.

After doing all of this, I am not sure if my device has this particular problem or not?

I played around with different settings and tried to compare the bottom speaker with front speakers. We can do that by moving the balance bar to the extreme left and then played a song on itunes (silence marshmello) and guess what, the distortion was present and you can hear them crackle. After that I moved the balance to extreme right and played the same song again, it distorted but I guess since it's a front facing speaker, so the crackling comes more into notice maybe by 5% more than bottom speaker.
I did the same trick to watch trailers on youtube and advertisements and they sounded very loud and clear, no crackling whatsoever from any of the front facing or the bottom speaker.
I have found the link on youtube and even this reviewer has acknowledged this problem,

Start it from 5:25 and he mentioned it all.

Bottomline is this, this issue seems to be calibration or software related and it's more evident on certain frequencies had it been a hardware one then it should have been present everywhere from trailers to advertisements and not restricted to certain songs or frequencies which isn't the case from what i have tested.
8plus sounds less louder than X, because its better calibrated, and I guess they went little far with X which lead to distorted sound. By getting the volume level to 8plus, this issue can be rectified.

I hope this gives you some peace to you guys.

I was watching the video above. Is it really a calibration / software problem?
could be. If was a hardware problem, more or maybe all units have the issue. At this point its really hard to say where is the problem. Maybe the volume its to high, the calibration between the new stereo speakers is bad...

You are right, with iOS 11.3 and Moving a little the balance to the left the issue is completly solved....

Apple have to improve by software with the next beta this...

I'm doing some tests here and I noticed the following: Pressing lightly on the protection grid with the nail being careful not to muffle the sound with the finger, the crackling sound completely disappears.

Yesterday my earpiece speaker all of the sudden got super muffled couldn't hear much from it. This morning it started to work again..

I don't know if it already existed but if I listen to the earpiece speaker, then bottom firing speaker individually, the ear piece speaker sounds very slightly quieter and doesn't sound as 'clear' as if there was slight static or something. Hard to tell if you just listen to the earpiece but when you compare one after the other right away the bottom firing speaker sounds better.

Can anyone test this? Put your ear against the earpiece then bottom speaker and see if the bottom one sounds slightly better

Its a hardware issue that can be fixed by sofware.
If you ajust the balance a little to the left the crackling desappears, the problem is that if you do that it also affects to the ear-AirPods, and the left AirPod will sound higher

is the protection grid, not the speaker himself. Isnt a hardware for real. Not all units has been afected, and not happen with all songs/sounds. If was a hardware problem, more units, or probably all songs/sounds , probably sound like hell.

Okay guys I found a solution for my particular unit if you dont remember Im the one who posted couple of days ago about having a better replacement with an almost no crackling speaker but it was there, so what I did was pressing firmly on the speaker grid with my nail from left to right like dragging my nail on the grid and it's gone for good this time finally a flawless device, just do it at your own risk im sharing this as it helped me out, goodluck folks !

Make a YouTube video or something haha...how does just rubbing on the speaker grid with a nail make the problem disappear?

Not rubbing its pressing firmly with my nail not my finger on the grid, it solved the problem for me
