What I don't understand about the X, is why the heck do they call it bezeless? It has pretty big bezels on the side and would have looked much better if the sides were bezeless like the Note 8. They are almost as big as the previous gen....

What is with the obsession for "bezel-less" phones? Is this in trend with the "infinity" look like with pools?

Yes, bezels do look ugly when they're huge but man, we've come a long way from having big bezels on our phones back in the early 2,000's to what it is now in the iPhone X.

Forget about the other phones' bezel-less designs at present. Pretty soon we'll be sick of looking at them and before you know it, bezels will make a comeback.

Why are people always using Samsung phones to compare with iPhones? Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 looks pretty good. No burger.

OTOH Apple's use of the dog ears is a design compromise, ...

Please tell me what the 'compromise' actually is. Seriously I'm interested in whether you really believe it represents a compromise because I just see that that instead of having a non displaying bezel across the top they have added extra screen, which can either mimic a bezel, or can extend background or can be used for other as yet undetermined functionality that can be developed in software. It doesn't compromise movies because 1:1.85 fills the depth without gong under the notch. So what is this mysterious 'compromise' of which you utter?

Because iPhone X will be the same design for at least 2-3 (if not 4) years. Apple has gotten so lazy in terms of doing design innovations it takes forever while Samsung comes up with more innovative designs about every year and improve on it.

Just look how long the iPhone 6 design has been around. 4 years now and they call it 'iPhone 8'.

Look at a Porsche from 30 years ago and look at a Porsche from today. Design doesn’t need to change for the sake of changing.

Front facing camera in the bottom corner of the phone. Haha. No thanks..

Look at the size of the notch on that phone.

That's a bug not a feature. They are so transfixed on copying superficiality that they can't get design right. In fact as I said at the time when they introduced their 'idea' for curving the side of the screen down, that it is not only bad design due to reflections, a screen needs to be flat, maybe a cinema screen needs to be concave. Now that they gone down this path what are they going to do next, they have to remove it completely, which they will.

I'd prefer that over the notch. At least it can flipped over when taking selfies.

And if you want dual cameras, there's the Vernee Mix 2 with a 6 inch QHD AMOLED display. It may not be an Android flagship but we are talking about displays and its only $193. So Apple is raping people with there "bezel-less" display when cheaper smartphone manufacturers can offer it at a much cheaper price range.

How is having a full width bezel better than having a notch?

Sorry to say...in terms of designs...Samsung did it Right......its no denying it. The iphone X looks like a hideous fisher price toy with a case already built in LOL. And yes I only compare the iPhone X to the S8 since they both have 5.8 inch displays while the Note 8 is in a league of its own.

A: that’s only your opinion, and not fact
B: are you even capable of making a post without including the word Samsung in it? Or is that in your contract with them to do so?

Its a fact by most people so its a fact. You guys were already comparing it to Samsung devices in earlier posts so I did too. Thanks....🙄

Sorry to say...I don't have to respect your opinion, but I have to respect your right to have an opinion. 😀

You are one person who wasn't wowed. For every one of you, there are ten who are impressed.
The OP is most certainly NOT the only one. I see nothing impressive about the iPhone X personally. I agree that the recent Samsungs are way ahead in the styling department. Regardless it says Apple so it will sell like hot cakes but not to me.

come on man.. do you truly believe your statement as fact and there's no denying it?

if you recognize what you're saying is an opinion then why add on all the hyperbole (or even lies at certain levels)?
i feel like you think it's making your statements stronger but it's actually doing the opposite (imo).. it makes people know that whatever you're about to read following this type of opening-- to take it with a grain of salt.

why not state the facts as facts.. and claim your opinions as opinions? or try to strengthen the position of your opinions by backing with facts.. etc... something along those lines ??

because you'll have a much (much!) better chance of convincing an opposing viewpoint to change their mind..
the way you do it now, nobody is going to change their mind.. not one i imagine .. changing somebody else's mind or viewpoint is the exact reasoning for arguing in the first place.

the people who agree with you are the people who already feel similarly.

Well I didn’t say they were the only one.

The iPhone X bezels go to the edges. The other phone’s do not.
The moment someone unveils a phone that is trully all screen on the front (no notch or bezel), is also the exact moment that phones will be considered a commodity.
If every phone produced is just 100% screen on one side and some variation of metal or glass on the back, then they lose a bit of unique character.
We have been seeing this with televisions for a decade now.

They should’ve made the bezels thick enough around the display to accommodate ‘the notch’. Symmetry is so so important in design. How Apple missed this is a mystery to me.

Its the first time they didn’t think about symmetry. That notch can’t be unseen.

Such a shame to ruin what could have been an edge to edge spacious and beautiful display. One look at the gorgeous display of the LG V30 is proof positive of what’s possible when you employ skilled designers. Apple blew it.

The notch in the screen looks terrible, very un-apple like. It’s hard to believe they released something that looks like this instead of making the screen straight across under the sensors.

I can’t get past the “devil horns” on the model X. How could they make such an obvious design mistake?

You’re not losing any screen with the notch, you’re actually gaining screen.

The ears that would otherwise just be a useless bezel are now a space for the status info. Moving that info away from the screen you would be stuck with had there been a full across bezel. Moving that info off the screen an app uses to show content.

They didn’t blow it. It was carefully thought out.

What did you EXPECT him to say???

"Uhhh, we really wanted to use Touch ID, but we couldn't figure out how to make it work under the screen in time to launch it this year so we're giving you the only alternative we could get to work in such a short time: Face ID"???

Of COURSE they are going to try and hype Face ID. They'd be idiotic not to. It's the security feature they had to use on their flagship phone.

And yes, they "had to". They didn't "want to" no matter how badly Mr. "I lost my ability to design somewhere around October of 2011" Ive wants to try and sell it. They wanted to integrate Touch ID under the OLED screen. That would have been cutting edge. That was (documented) what they wanted to do.

They failed.

Face ID will be fine, but the rhetoric that it was always their first choice is patently silly. Would you rather have Face ID (and all of it's potential issues, even if none of them come to pass) or Touch ID integrated under the screen? Taking up NONE of your front real estate and using technology that has been rock solid for years...

Anyone that says Face ID is being dishonest. It will work, and it'll probably be just as convenient, but it was a "last resort" and absolutely is the consolation prize we got so they could get the X to market this year.

And where did you get such solid information from? Your post sounds like your had a 1 to 1 with Johnny Ive over a pint.

Do you just look at your phone or pick it up and use it? If you do the latter, then you’ll realise what a horrendous and impractical design that is.

I will say this.. The Pixel 2 XL looks better than the iPhone X in silver and space gray. Don't feel too offended, Apple fans. A difference of trimming the upper glass trim, no camera hump, and no notch. Note8, V30, and Pixel 2 XL all look better than iPhone 6/6s/7/8/X in any color.

Apple hasn't made a beautiful iPhone since 2013. I will still wait on the iPhone X because I want November 3 to be an iPhone Xperience Day with Thor: Ragnarok as a bonus. Camp out and have fun out there.

Notice trimming the glass strip and no antenna lines actually makes it look cleaner and nicer.

iPhone X is nothing but iPhone 6 with bigger screen on front.
Absolutely same form factor and design.
I didnt like iPhone 6 and every next iPhone looked just same.
Thats why I stay with SE until they really change those slippery same looking iPhones.
