I got the pixel 2 XL it is normally 850 but target had a $250 GC so i paid close to $900 tax included upfront but i can take the phone to any network.
so its 850-250= 600 +tax i saw alot of apple fans jumped on this deal it was there for only 2 weeks. i can never reward a company for overcharging and i wasnt prepared to spend 850 phones shouldnt cost more then laptops period

The pixel has some really nice things like potrait mode but this is not just a software thing . they use dual pixels in both the front and back cam. Pixel is the only phone to have a potrait mode for selfie cam.

VR is so damn awesome. its been there since 2016 but i didnt have the phone to use it. street view lets you to go to all the famous vacation destinations and use the VR. you can also do VR on ur own address super cool. games r so damn cool but that is to be expected

ARcores- so damn good although u have AR on snapchat and other apps the level of detail isnt very good but with AR in the CAM u can such perfect starwars they look so real its almost not beleiveable.

there is also voice authentication you can log into ur phone with ur voice so super cool

its totally rock solid phone with 2 yrs warranty rock solid battery everything u can ask for . updates for 3yrs . photo in full res on google cloud u cant really ask for more .

There were several deals on them throughout the festive period. Even Google themselves knocked 100-200 off retail at one point IIRC.

Really, the only real reason to buy a new iPhone is brand loyalty or heavy investment in the ecosystem.

I will be so happy when they don’t lower the price for the top tier model. They need to keep their margins in tact and if folks have an issue with the cost.

Pretty much a personal problem and not an Apple issue.

So that should apply to other areas as well? HomePods should be something not many can afford? You'll be happy to pay more for a "top tier model?"

So it's okay for newer smartphones to become marginalized upgrades while flagship smartphone prices continue to increase? Just because you're "happy" to pay to see higher price tags and could fork over cash for it does not mean everyone else will be.

I blame ending subsidized phones. Back in the day any flagship from any OEM only cost you $200. Today you have many pricing scenes from many carries, High out of pocket cost AND still have to pay installments.

What? You pay the taxes and the upgrade fee out of pocket, which depending on the phone is typically under $100. Do you really still think that the phone back in the subsidized days only cost you $200? Even if it did, that was for 16 gig model.

I don’t answer to you. Find someone who does.

Fiscal year in what country? Fiscal year begins on July 1. October 1 is the second quarter of the fiscal year, not the first.

Countries aren't at issue. Corporations can adopt whatever fiscal year they wish. Apple's fiscal year begins October 1. They are are currently operating in the second quarter of FY2018. MR's reporting constantly fails to make this very important distinction, so no wonder so many are confused by this most basic concept.

Of course it’s okay. It’s absolutely okay. You might not like it because their stuff costs a lot, but that’s how the market works. Luxury car makers continue to charge high prices too. Those who think it’s worth it will buy them. Those who don’t won’t. If Apple is happy with their targets at this price point, they won’t change a thing. If they’re not, driven by us, then they will. Basic economics. Where is it written that Apple must price to sell a zillion home pods??

The price is outrageous. I don't know how anyone can justify spending that much on a phone.

Even if you are wealthy, that money would be much better off invested in Bitcoin or stocks.

Just because you find it outrageous, doesn't means it is outrageous...

Ah, I see. You'd prefer they charge $2,500 for the iPhone X then? That would really help keep their per unit margins "in tact". But wait, if they don't sell very many then their total profit is lower. Hmm... maybe the sales numbers and market pricing does matter! Perhaps overcharging the value of something isn't a great business strategy.

If your wealthy enough, the price becomes a non issue.
You may not be able to see/feel that because you may not be in that position.

I wonder if some folks like myself are contributing to this phenomenon...

Normally I upgrade my wife's and my iPhones every two years ...5s, 6s. This year was our year to upgrade. However, for the first time in quite a while I wasn't interested at all in either the newest (X) or the iterative (8) because of:

1) cost
2) useless/janky/missing features (IMO, not here to debate features)
3) highly questionable/vexing design compromises (IMO, not here to debate design choices)
4) and most importantly, our 6s' seem to be getting the job done just fine

I also have been going down the “S” line since the iPhone 4S, after buying my first iPhone, a 4, which was a disaster. Like you I wasn’t going to upgrade this year, but after seeing the results from the camera on my son’s iPhone 7 I decided to upgrade. The X was never an option, not interested in a buggy new model and face time is a reason not to buy for me. So I was going to buy an iPhone 7 until I spotted that the iPhone 8 costs the same as a 256Mb iPhone 7. I need 128Mb so could get a base 8 over the bigger 7. Unless something significant happens I can’t see any reason to upgrade my iPhone for years now.

A market can work, but it won't work optimally if people are being priced out of the discussion for services and consumer products. If Apple wants to dominate China, it needs to readjust its pricing strategy as well. Oppo and Huawei can beat Apple because of price and higher specs.

Oh well

I bought the 256GB X on day 1 and don’t regret it. Amazing phone.

It’s not for everyone and there are other iPhones priced lower for people who don’t wonna spend so much
I will agree with that. If you are the least bit strapped for cash then don’t bother with the iPhone X. I really like it but it’s not a blockbuster.

Best iPhone under Steve Jobs started at $599. Now, under Tim Cook it is $999. A 67% price increase!!!

even worse overseas. iphone 4 - which was considered overpriced by some and pretty expensive by most in it’s time - started at €629. iphone X starts at €1149 - that‘s a price increase of ~83% in 7 years for apple’s top phone.

Pricing people out is exactly one way the market does work. The only “discussion” a consumer has to offer (unless there are other things like ethical/legal/environmental issues) is whether or not to purchase. Just because I can’t buy a Lamborghini doesn’t mean the market isn’t working.

If you want to change the subject to China, there’s an example of the market not working normally because of the State’s protectionist policies, market favoritism, and disregard of international patent law. And even so, you’re talking about competition based on price and “higher specs” (whatever that is). If consumers like what Oppo and Huawei and Xiaomi are offering, they’ll let them know by buying them. And then Apple will have some thinking different to do. That is the market working (unless it’s being controlled by a government).
