OK, now THIS is interesting. I just got this emailed to me from a .mac address:

um...

I zoomed in on the pic of the iPod and it had an invalid barcode.

I zoomed in on the pic of SJ & he has the international number 666 tattooed on his forehead.

... looks good to me :)

Oh dear... Lazy tiscali webmaster! Looks like he/she did a google search for 'Video iPod' and chose the one that leads to an iPodlounge mockup gallery.

Silly bugger!

Be interesting to see them giving it as a prize...

I see that the MR headline "iPod Video Photo - a Fake" has become "iPod Video Photo - a Fake?"

The fun was too good to end so easily :)

I am starting to think the video wasn't the creator of the original "fake" making a "behind the scenes" documentary of the methods he/she used. Why then go through so much clever editing to make it look like the video and the image were created at the same time? It was the presence of identical wrinkles of the packing foam behind the "iPod" that seemed to throw me. Why change the colors of the color bars in the original faked image if you already had swiped them from somewhere else? These things, along with all the other inconsistancies, suggest to me this video is someone trying to discredit the original image.

missing detail

there is a 7 missing form the sticker in the video vs the picture.

Wow that was, what? Does this cat think he's the meow? From day one, knew it was a fake, good part he skipped his Kanji lessons.

I guess my cynical question is whether or not we really need a small portable video device?
Well, we already have them. Portable DVD players (some of which have screens the size of iPods), PSPs, cell phones, and the 5G iPod. The question is whether Apple is going to take things a step further.

I'm unsure about the picture/video now, but I think it would be safe to say that, if/when Apple releases a full-face screen, it will be touch-sensitive, and therefore will also have PDA functionality. I don't think Apple will ever release an "Apple PDA", but I can easily see iPods with PDA functionality. Music will always come first with iPods, but why not add other stuff?

Here is just a silly question about the video, has anybody actually found the image that was used for the "LCD color test". According to the video, you just type lcd color test in Google and it would come up. I have tried and I can't seem to find that picture.

They need to remove the photo from the fake photo gallery. Macrumors even goes as far as to say the author of the original is the author of the video. That needs to be fixed... the original still cannot be proven as fake.

Oh no here I go again

I noticed that towards the end of the video when he's moving the black scribble in place there are 4 pieces of evidence that suggest the creator of the video was the creator of the original image.

1/ The scribble that is being moved is identical to that of the original image.
2/ The image in the video is higher resolution than the original image. So much so we make out that it is an 8 on the label.
3/ The label is in an identical position to the original image.
4/ The crinkle marks are identical to those in the final image.

Make of it what you will. Enclosed an attachment to illustrate my points.

The Great Apple Coverup

Step 1: ACTUAL photo of new 6gen iPod released on Flickr

Step 2: Apple realizes its cover is blown. Steve Jobs says, "Oh crap."

Step 3: Jobs puts his team at work to create video that makes it appear spy photo was photoshopped. Puts video on YouTube.

Step 4: 6gen iPod as seen on Flickr released Feb. 28.

Step 5: MacRumors realizes that it was duped by a "dupe".

I think this is just a brilliant idea from Apple.

Some guy actually did get a real picture of the new ipod, then Apple hired the best photoshopers around to create this video for them, so that we all think that the picture is a fake. And then on Tuesday everyone will be surprised when they actually do release this.

Killuminati... great minds think alike! ...except mine is faster. :p

If the next iPod looks just like this fake, then we will know how far Apple will go to squash rumors. If it is a fake, then we will know how far fans will go to make Apple news.

Fake Video

As I posted to the other thread:

mmmm....

compare the original with the last frame of the "movie".

they are different!

1) no international "7" on the barcode label of the movie

2) the part number in the original is a "B", in the movie it is an "8"

3) the sequence of the movie indicates that it was recreated from the original fake... wha?

... good job, tho!

Yeah, I believe this video is a fake too. It's a remake from the original photo. One big mismatch is the "B" and "8", as you pointed out. Another is the chinese character, if you look at the video carefully, the second chinese character the guy drew is different from the original photo (the right side is much more curved). And I highly doubt anyone can figure out adding one more dot on the second chinese character, without being a real chinese. (I am a chinese guy, so I know this.)

One other mismatch is the brush work at the end, the one used to erase date/time on the original picture. Look carefully in the video the brush pattern and compare with the original one. There are more space between the black spots in the original one.

Haha, whoops! I should have actually read the thread before posting. And I can't believe I missed that and it was just one post above me. :p

It would be funny if we were right, because then it would just show how far Apple is willing to go to squash rumours. ;) just kidding reyesmac

But:
  1. The scribble from the original fake can be copied with a touch of the wand tool.
  2. It's generic Zebra printer output, easy peasy to duplicate.
  3. That's the magic of Photoshop.
  4. That would be expected when working from the original image :)

Ain't this fun?

Great video. I kowtow to the PS deities once more, because I can't even make a good-looking circle in Photoshop after using it for ten years.

I think the shakiest argument is over the Chinese writing.

If it is as some say, that the creator of the fake picture just reenacted it for the video, he wouldn't have drawn it so differently. If the same person copies something he drew before, it should be similar (especially when having the photo as reference). These aren't that similar.

The scribble the guy actually drew is different from the original. He used the original scribble in the video afterwards.

In the originial image, it's an "B".

That's because the guy used the originial image in this video frame. (after photoshopped)

Thanks for the side-by-side analysis. The two do have remarkable similarities that would be implausible to create from scratch (the wrinkles on the tyvek).

There seem to be a lot of folks unwilling to give this one up. Truth is, have you ever known the original to be genuine? Does it really matter if the video is done by the same person who did the original mockup? Why the conspiracy theories, why? Because, it seems that the desire to believe in a MR forum is stronger than the desire to be rational. For all those for whom this image had given hopes of sugar plumbs dancing in their heads, knowing that st. jobs was soon to be there; close your eyes and go to sleep. Come Tuesday you'll see what's been left under the tree. And don't be a brat if you don't get what you really, really wanted.
