If the texture wasn’t so slippery, it wouldn’t need a case at this point. I’m only looking at cases because of how slick the things are. I have AC+ but don’t want the hassle.

I have been using my iPhones without any cases since the 4s (my first smartphone), because they just feel right in the hand, and I hate how even the thinnest case just makes it feel that intolerably thicker or bulkier. I don't think the phones are too big or slippery to handle (I am currently still on my 8+). Only thing is that yes, the absence of a case will invariably destroy its resale value from all the scuffs it picks up (mine has numerous marks arounds the camera housing), but since I plan to hold on to mine for another year at least, it doesn't bother me too much.

I agree with the caseless crowd for the most part.

However, the case also increases grip, and lets me do my thing without scratching up the camera.

Also, I have a Bellroy 3-card Phone Case (a wallet case without a front cover), and it allows me to live without a wallet. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Going caseless is worth it till the moment it slips out of your hands 🤪
Quite a few of us case haters have dropped our phones, noticed no damage and moved on with our lives. Not every drop damages things and not every drop destroys a phone.

That's just something that paranoid case users always think will happen and it motivates them to keep using a case as well as trying to warn others.

I couldn’t adopt that mindset personally. My iPhone was dropped twice yesterday, once when my daughter knocked it out of my hand while I was taking a photo and the second time when I elbowed it off the arm of my sofa. Both times it bounced on a solid oak floor. If I didn’t use a super thin but protective Caudabe Sheath case, my iPhone would be at the very least cracked by now. I think damage depends on the type of floor. If it’s hard wood, concrete, tarmac, stone etc, it’s highly likely the phone will be damaged to some degree. If the floor is carpeted or a vinyl, you’re more likely to get away with it.

I agree, it's generally the surface the phone impacts. Most of the damage my phones have taken is a result of being dropped on concrete or asphalt when getting in or out of the car.

That said, as a non-case user I try to minimize the chances of accidents. Here are the two places I usually am in the living room…and where my phone(s) goes when I'm there.

I am always operating with the assumption that someone or something is going to make a move that damages my phone. Hence I try and take steps to prevent that from happening before it happens. Accidents will always happen, that's just the nature of things (and people), but I can try and prevent it.

I just got my 12 pro max day before yesterday, I got a case with it and screen protector. I have not applied them yet as I am loving how this phone feels without. using a case for me may be one of those things I do based on where I may go or what I may be doing. I do not want to use a case all the time. I did get AC+ with theft and loss protection so I am not overly worried.

I don't like cases, but in some jobs and some events/places where you need to keep your phone with you it would be crazy not to have a case. At least for the duration.

That’s exactly right. It’s all a case by case basis for me. Home or visiting family I don’t need it. But going for a hike? Better believe I’ll have a case on this lol

I’ve always gone with a case on these slippery iPhones... Apple has made a fortune off folks with phones broken from 2 foot drops.

it’s like car mats in a brand new car during Canadian winters... worth it.

How many are you also using screen protectors in addition to cases? Torn about need one for my 12 Pro.... seemed before it would be more smudges, so not a huge fan...

From my experience the screen is better at resisting scratches than the 11 pro. But hey it’s only been 2 months

I typically just get a relatively inexpensive clear silicon case on Amazon so the phone color shows. It's nice and form-fitting, almost as good as case-less. Good drop protection; add a good screen protector. When the case starts to yellow in a year or so a new one isn't expensive.

I try not to put my phone in places where it could be damaged but life is busy and sometimes my priorities and attention is elsewhere. I don’t worry too much as I tend to use a well recommended case. The floors throughout the ground floor of my house are either oak or porcelain tiles, so hard and unforgiving.

I couldn’t work out from your pics what sort of floors you have?

It's all carpet. We moved in two and a half years ago, but the house before that was carpet too. Never owned, rented or lived in a home that has hardwood flooring.

Never used a case on my 6s and still looks pretty much new besides some very light scratches on the screen that don’t impact functionality or view. So I’m assuming the newer iPhones with their better materials would do perfectly fine.

I agree, the need for a case is not going to be the same for all users. I go caseless/ minimalistic case once in a while to enjoy the feel of the phone in places where I am sure a drop wouldnt be bad.
The other day I dropped my 12PM on tarmac when getting out of the car that shattered the tempered glass and caused 2 minor scratches on the rails despite a case. Such clumsy butter-fingery moments happen when I least expect and thats why I try to use some sort of protection.

Depends on you. For me no case is bad not because I’ll drop my phone. I will get micro scratches though and such and that will bother me.

I use a pitaka air and screen protector. You can’t even tell the screen protector is on and the case is thin enough for me.

We live in an odd world where a valid question is “Is going case-less a bad idea?” where the question should be: “is hiding the beautifully designed sleek iPhone in an ugly, bulky case a bad idea?”
