Whatever floats the buyers boat I say. I’ve got a Caudabe Sheath and prefer the look of the iPhone with it on than the bare iPhone on its own. Others may think differently but as long as the owner is happy, it’s irrelevant.

Couldn’t agree with you more.
IIRC, this protection habits were getting stronger around iPhone4.
I remember a phone full of scratch with 3GS, what we are saying as building character.

Fast forward and with habit of changing new phone every 2,3 years, this mindset of protection is seeded subconsciously, at least for me. Resale or trade-in price is getting better with pristine condition.

It's getting harder to find a good drop proof case with grip that doesn't have some issue.
UAGs have served me very well- good grip with one of the best drop protection. They last at least 2 years before any sort of wear starts to show up.

Not really, pathfinder is bar of soap, civilian not much better, monarch has good grip but has sag problems.

Dropped my phone already, when it literally slipped out of my hand. No damage at all, I still plan on keeping it careless. I have Apple Care should anything major arise, but knock on wood, I would never need to use it.

If you can't afford to pay to have possible damage repaired, get the best case you can afford and exercise common sense.

The question isn't a serious one that requires a lot of introspection and rumination. It doesn't matter what other people do. Other people aren't paying your bills. Make an adult decision and be done with it.
