Notice that since the X has a narrower screen, although it looks like there is a lot more screen, you still have the same amount of content displayed since you can fit more text per line on the Plus due to the wider screen.

I think the bolded part will be key to most to people.

You can get the same (or at least similar enough) visual area of websites, Facebook and Twitter in the iPhone X... but in a smaller body than the Plus.

I'm a Plus user since I wanted the larger screen. But the tradeoff was it had to be in a physically giant phone.

I've been fine with it... but maybe I'd enjoy the smaller body of the Plus if the experience will be similar. I can't wait to get my hands on it in store to find out.

You also get a lot bigger video in landscape if using a standard 16x9 ratio on the Plus.

Yep... that's a situation where the Plus excels... 16x9 video content will still be larger on a Plus model.

If that's what matters the most... you need a Plus.

But the downside is that the Plus models are much bigger in the hand.

So basically... if you want the maximum amount of 16x9 video content on an iPhone... you need a Plus.

But if you are fine with a similar amount of everything else... you can get all that with a smaller body in the X.

It is all about tradeoffs. For me a smaller device is worth it (to be honest I largely bought the plus as the standard was not as fully featured). I am happy to have a smaller phone with similar usable screen space. If I need a bigger screen I have an iPad 10.5 for that.

Personally , I’m excited about the bigger screen in a smaller form factor. Some things will take some getting used to (keyboard, for instance), but best of both worlds, IMO.

It’s not a downgrade. It’s just a new phone. And the decision was made to go with a screen that is taller but a tad narrower than the plus. But it wasn’t made to compete and beat all other iPhones when it comes to the screen size. This is the new iPhone X. You like it and want it, buy it. You don’t like it and don’t want it, don’t but it. The phone is made like this and it is what it is. It’s a tad narrower than the plus. Ok. Cool. Awesome. That’s great. Am I buying this phone basing it on it beating the plus on size screen, no. I’m basing it if I like the phone for how it was made and the features. That’s all. And that’s why i bought 2.

Got my tempered glass edge to edge screen protector yesterday and compared to my 7 Plus it’s a bit more narrow as I already knew.

I’m happy to move to the X though and yes I initially hated it. Evaluating what I care about in a phone. The X is the best option Apple has for me.

I agree I have never had a plus model. I figure the X is in he the middle and give me a little bit of an 8 size and an 8 plus. The OLED is the most important I can’t deny the Samsung Galaxy screens have looked impressive for years with their screens.

And also doesn't account for Apple UI restrictions for both rounded ends of the screen, so useable screen size is more in between the 8 and 8+.

Kinda funny how that UI Guidelines video specifically says not to position controls near the corners/notch so that they appear "cut-off". Yet, during the keynote, they demoed a game that very clearly had one of the main controls cut off by the notch.

I calculated my areas form the spec pixel dimensions to get an accurate aspect ratio, then used Pythagoras to calculate the width and height from the quoted diagonals 4.7", 5.5" and 5.8".

Standard: 2.304 x 4.097 = 9.44 sq ins
X: 2.432 x 5.265 = 12.80 sq ins
Plus: 2.69 x 4.783 = 12.86 sq ins

That’s wrong because you won’t have allowed for the notch cutting into the X screen unless you count the pixels from the notch down.
I think some will come to dislike the notch and sell their X for a Plus or regular model.

My one concern is the screen size. I’ve been a plus user since the 6 plus came out. The thing is, I don’t think it will be significant enough to make a huge difference. After a week I’ll get used to it and it’ll be natural.

It’s all about perception, the phone won’t feel big or small after extended use. It will be what it is. I for one wanted to hate the X. I tried to find the faults, but in the end I think the smaller form factor and OLED screen will be a positive trade off for a slightly slimmer, yet taller display. The trend in smartphones is to go narrow and tall, it’s something we will have to get used to. I could see the X plus moving in that direction.

Isn’t it the same brightness as the iPhone 7 and 8?

This phone is the equivalent to the regular 8.. a ‘plus size’ X will come out next year..

i'd love to know the percentage of how much bigger the plus screen is. someone who calculated the edges and notch.

First of All iPhone X has DIFFERENT ASPECT RATIO. But In terms of Square inch it's just slightly bigger than iPhone 8 Plus for 4 reasons:
1. iPhone 5/5S/6/6S/7/8 and Plus Models has 16:9 Aspect Ratio
2. iPhone X has 1.95:1 aspect ratio (from top to bottom)
3. iPhone X has a total of 5.16" Tall X 2.64" Wide with a total of 13.62 Square Inch
4. iPhone 8 Plus May look bigger, because it has 4.79" Tall X 2.70" Wide, along with bigger bezels but only 12.91 SQI

did you even read other posts here? Because of the rounded corners and the notch, the X has a 1% smaller display then the plus.

The X actually has more screen area than the Plus, just without the huge bezels / chins.
yeah, without the notch and rounded corners it would have more screen then the plus. But it has the notch and rounded corners, so the X screen is smaller then the plus.

Yes, the diagonal size seems bigger (5.8" vs 5.5"), but looking at the pictures, the iPhone Plus screen is wider. I've been trying to find the screen size (width x height) for both iPhone X and Plus but couldn't find it. Official pages only show width and height of the phone, but not the screen.

Area = width * height

So I'm just trying to see which phone contains more screen real state ignoring the diagonal size.

Any ideas?

Its 5.8" minus the black top area so its not a real 5.8" the iPhone 8+ its just a bigger iPhone

Not according to math.

Screen Area Calculations

X
135.75mm x 63.12mm (Screen without cut out
8568.54 mm sq
34 x 4.99 (Area of cut out)
169.66 mm sq
8399 mm sq (Actual screen area)
13.02 Square Inches

8 Plus
121.54mm x 68.36mm
8308.5 mm sq
12.88 Square Inches

8
104.05mm x 58.5mm
6087 mm Sq
9.44 Square Inches

This makes the screen area of the X 1.09% larger than the 8 Plus and 37.92% larger than the 8.

I dont see that your math deduct the black area and if you notice in some APPS the edges on both side of the black is blacked out now you should measure the screen
