I'm far from being a total Apple fanboy, but that is the funniest thing I've read all week. If that insider actually exists they should be writing a sitcom for their bosses instead of saying stuff like that to the press.

But seriously, we don't even know if Apple want to call it iTV yet. "Reportedly 'Furious' Over Rumoured" anything makes for a funny headline too.

If I were Apple I'd leverage the iPod name instead. iPod nano, iPod Touch... iPod TV. It's basically what the current AppleTV is anyway, an iPod for the TV.

I doubt any serious 'insider' made those comments. When any tabloid uses those unnamed source quotes, you should discard them immediately. It's just the gutter press and blogtards getting all excited about SEO juice as usual.

is it just me or is the quality of macrumors front page stories greatly improving each week? we already have the amazing story about eneloops masquerading as apple batteries. now, a story about some two bit exec from a tabloid tv station being furious over what is still a rumor. i'm blown away.

Just for a little fun and for those that have mentioned it...

ITV plc currently has a market capitalisation of around £2billion. Which is roughly $3billion.

However, due to the actually value of the broadcast slots/rights they own, and the need to pay a little extra to shareholders, it would probably set Apple back around $5-6billion to buy ITV.

Now I know Apple has some major cheddar.. but even they aren't silly enough to waste that sort of money on a brand name!

You see, I wanted Apple to make a competitor the the Xbox, not a TV set box...

Instead of an XBox, can we get an iBox? I've already seen commercials of it!

iPod TV sounds like a perfect name.

My insider sources says iTV executives are dung throwing monkeys, and their staff are furious on how stupid the iTV executives are. =p

I much prefer the name Apple TV.

ITV are very keen talk about their brand (ever since the regional commercial TV companies lost their identities and just became ITV) and particularly so now that they are launching pay to view stations. In the circumstances, it wouldn't surprise me if they cooked up this story and took it to the Mirror so they could talk about their "strong brand" in an article people will actually read because it is associated with today's hot ticket, Apple.

Dear ITV: Calm down dears, it's just a rumour!
Oh wait, it's the Mirror, so the whole thing is a rumour...

Yeah I can see it being a problem here.. we all know that as nice as Apple products are the company isn't shy about stealing trademarks/ideas, bullying or generally making enemies. But as Microsoft know, countries outside the US aren't quite as tolerant towards badly behaved companies regardless of their size. Apple need to be careful. Still, it's only a rumour so there's no point jumping to conclusions.

Hm let's see, the Mac Mini is very small and it's a Bloomin' Brilliant Contraption. Looking forward to the newly renamed BBC Microcomputer :D

(Also yes, Apple's brand has certainly been damaged by the way they handled the iPhone 4 issues. IME it's become extremely uncool to own their phone now, to the point where I'm very discreet with mine as people take the piss non stop!)

actually, to solve all this harumph! we could just give the device an appropriate name then everyone's happy...

how about, "Expensive Useless Box?"

1. Calm down.

2. I agree that description is not exclusive to the Daily Mirror. However their track record in the High Court and with the PCC is particularly poor, even when compared to other British tabloids.

3. I'm writing this on a PC. The "fanboy" knee-jerk reaction stopped being an argument around 1998.

1. Idiots on the internet annoy me. I have realised the cure is to stop reading forums as they're almost all ruled over by argumentative egotistic idiots who can't have a discussion but must instead argue and abuse their way to the top of the pile, which will never ever happen hence endless arguments. I'm working on stepping away from the keyboard - seriously, I am, it's got to stop because most forum users (the ones that argue as opposed to actually 'talking' calmly) make me very angry.

2. The Mirror is no worse or better than any other tabloid around the world for attracting lawsuits and it's absolutely no reason not to take the basis of the story at face value: someone at ITV is investigating what Apple plans to call their new iteration of Apple TV. That's all.

3. Fair enough :)

Gold dust??!!

Ha! As if anything ITV ever produced was gold dust! Dross, more like. ITV are absolute masters at lowbrow, knuckle-dragging tabloid TV and very little else.

They are mad at Apple until the armored truck of cash apears at the ITV headquarters... then they will be in love with Apple....

I suggest an Apple press release "we were thinking about offering ITV $100,000,000 for the rights to use the name iTV, but it seems they don't want that money". Then heads would be rolling.

Oh, ITV network... Don't get all in a huff just yet. Global bans? Cheap shots at the iPhone antenna? Calm thyselves.

Besides, Apple and England are pretty cozy. Seems like just about all of Apple's in-house designers are Brits. I'm sure this won't come to much.

All Apple would have to do is say, "OK, then we won't offer it in England." Riots in the streets ensue.

Can't argue with that. Not sure how it's relevant in the slightest, but can't argue with it :)

ITV's policy generally is this:

EXEC 1: what's popular on the other channels right now?
EXEC 2: (names something good on BBC or Channel 4, or even from the USA, believe it or not)
EXEC 1: Great, let's copy it.

Except that the iPhone 4 is gold dust.

How many units sold now?

Too funny how a small TV channel slams one of the biggest companies in the world.

Remember that the name iPhone was taken before. All it takes is money, and our favourite company doesn't have a shortage of it...

I feel that this is why the story ended up in the Mirror's pages - leaked to them from someone at ITV wanting to get UK citizens to think of ITV as the victim under attack from Apple and how dare they challenge our TV networks!

But I guarantee that at the root of the story is someone at ITV reading the iTV rumour and calling up their trademark lawyers to check.

It's a MASSIVE television channel over here. One of the longest running in the world, in fact. Small-minded Americans, eh? The irony is jaw-dropping.

Also, the iPhone name thing was completely different - that was a product, and Apple were able to buy the use of the name from Cisco. Here, we're talking about an entire company's name. Totally, totally different.

He's location is Vancouver. Though agreed with the narrow minded comment. Though I can't stand ITVs output, it does remain a large TV station in a very competitive market in the UK. I can understand their brand protection, even as I hate the brand.

maybe Jobs should SUE the ITV ppl for reportedly getting furious over a RUMOUR!!!!!

morons....

nothing in stone yet.... relax ITV owners.
