Except that the iPhone 4 is gold dust.

How many units sold now?

Too funny how a small TV channel slams one of the biggest companies in the world.

Remember that the name iPhone was taken before. All it takes is money, and our favourite company doesn't have a shortage of it...

In 2008, ITV Group had revenue of over 3.5 bn USD. How many:apple:TVs does it take to generate that annual figure? Don't underestimate poor television for the masses!

What if SJ were to release it under the name iTV everywhere but the UK.

"No iTV for you until ITV lightens up."

put public pressure on ITV..

Wasn't there an "Apple vs Apple" court case where Apple Inc. won? Wouldn't that be a precedence should ITV sues Apple when they actually rebrand the Apple TV to iTV?

No, Apple Inc didn't win any court case against Apple Corps. They just threw so much money at Apple Corps that they couldn't say "no".

Since ITV wants to involve lawyers: As a frightening example how lawyers can mess up things completely if you just let them, have a look at www.nissan.com .

What a strange naivety some of you live in. ITV is one of the most successful TV NETWORKS here in the UK. It's not simply a channel but a network of a whole host of advertising, marketing and TV channel companies. It's market cap is about £2 billion I think. Regardless of what you think of ITV (Im personally not a fan), it is a very profitable business in the distribution of tv shows, advertising and films. I agree the iPhone comment was a cheap shot but suppose a large 3rd party came along 50 years after Apple was started and brought out a computer-like product delivering very similar functionality and called it "The Apple Computer" or "The iMac". "The Mighty Apple" would be furious and you know it. That said, it was just an article in a tabloid newpaper and just a rumour anyways... Perhaps Apple will change the name to NBCTV, abcTV, or FoxTV /sarcasm

Who said Britain was worried about its reputation? ITV is. They were the first to air "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", the most successful show on the planet. They were the first to air "Pop Idol" which was sold in the US as "American Idol", now the biggest show in the US. They were the first to air "Britain’s Got Talent" - sold to the US as "Americas Got Talent". They are by no means a small company. I don't like any of their shows, but they DO have a big reputation to protect.

Just don't sell it in the UK. It's not like Apple is losing a lot by not selling a fringe-device to a small country.

Add USA to the list of exclusions because ITV (the company) owns ITV trademark in USA too.

Easy solution: don't sell the iTV in the UK. For all the video content that's worth buying from the UK iTunes store, I doubt anyone would miss it. (And double that sentiment for Ireland, where we've only just got any movies at all, and no TV content.)

"Noting problems with Apple's new iPhone 4, one "insider" at the network worries about possible damage to its reputation should Apple make the name change."

Oh brother. Have you ever SEEN iTV's programming? Barf-o-rama.

They were the first to air "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire"..."Pop Idol" which was sold in the US as "American Idol"... "Britain’s Got Talent" - sold to the US as "Americas Got Talent".

And that's the HIGH end of their programming, which still had to be polished (a lot) before they would be palatable to American audiences.

Why not just drop it with the i thing and stick with apple TV.

It's a branding thing. Has to be "i" not "Apple". Nothing Apple makes (except Apple TV, which is the point) has a brand name containing "Apple", and the "i" draws customers of Apple's other "i" products (iPod, iPhone, iMac).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

Itv could sell the name and use the money to make some actual decent TV.

UK Trademark catagory registration is seperated into catagories. Any online or computing service at all, hardware or software, pretty much has to fit into either Class 9 or Class 41. ITV own the trademark in both catagories, and another four catagories as well.

There's not a clear category split between "hardware" and "software" in trademark law. It depends on the purpose of what you're making, and ITV owns the trademark in pretty much every category that could concievably involve audio-visual material.

It's worth noting that ITV have a fairly substanive online television streaming service, so it would have a VERY good passing off case against Apple launching a box that did online content streaming of television.
Phazer

You're absolutely right about all of this. That's why I don't believe it's true, unless Apple is already negotiating behind the scenes (out of the headlines) and perhaps this is all posturing by ITV to drive up the price. Apple has a fairly competent legal staff managing a very large patent and trademark portfolio, and they're likely quite aware of ITV, as it only take s couple of minutes to do a search, which is part of the due diligence process.

I have my doubts about this claim and is simple fat news to fill in space for friday

Canada has an iTV news channel and nothing coming outta this?
That means UK should be going after iTV in Canada as well, when iTV in Canada has been around a very, very long time.

Who's infringing who?
Maybe UK should shut the F*%^ up Canada iTV may just come after them for using iTV name after Canada established it loooong ago.

Shuv that up your a** UK

GO CANADA

I find it hilarious that some company in the UK would get their panties in a bunch over a rumor. A RUMOR! And they are afraid of having their brand image tarnished by possibly causing consumer confusion between them and the best selling iPhone in history?

Anyone remember that data center Apple was building on the east coast somewhere? Doesn't that sound oddly coincidental given the iTV rumors of low storage, primarily streaming device? AppleTV was, according to Apple, nothing more than a "hobby". Now Apple appears to be getting serious - Google is developing desktop TV products as well, and Apple needs to be in this space to expand iOS market share. A re-branding of AppleTV to iTV will signal the emergence of that product from a "hobby" stage to a serious money maker.

I would gladly terminate my Dish subscription if I could simply order whatever programming I wanted on demand using an iTV product. I would be thrilled, actually.

There's nothing funnier than angry Brits. Have you seen In The Loop?

You should watch "The Thick Of It", which in the loop is a watered down version of - In The Loop is a disney film compared to thick of it, go try... :)

Well informed, great post. Thanks.

You know it isn't "The UK" saying this, it's some god awful TV company.

Although honestly, I blame Canada.

Some great posts again. No trademark infringement ?

I suppose starting a TV station called Coca Cola TV wouldn't infringe either

ITV is a **** station ?

Of course, that makes all the difference. Judges always throw these cases out if the plaintiffs run crap companies.

Oh, ITV network... Don't get all in a huff just yet. Global bans? Cheap shots at the iPhone antenna? Calm thyselves.

Besides, Apple and England are pretty cozy. Seems like just about all of Apple's in-house designers are Brits. I'm sure this won't come to much.

All Apple would have to do is say, "OK, then we won't offer it in England." Riots in the streets ensue.

So what about Scotland ... can we have it ? Britain isn't just England you know.
