Mine is indeed an express replacement - I have a hold on my credit card for the full price of the phone.

My replacement unit arrives tomorrow from Pennsylvania. Serial number seems normal - no indication of being remanufactured (the manufacture date is 09/29-10/1).
I'll see if this one 'fixes' the issue.

Irregulagate!

The worst part is the refurbs they are sending out. Believe they're new if you want, but you won't have a matching serial number on your box. Since I'm certain people are also keeping the box in pristine, climate controlled condition, wouldn't you think it would bug you more that the #'s no longer match?

Gosh it would bug me.

Time for Apple to get it's act together. No reason we should be spending money if it isn't going to be 10000% flawless right???

I remember the days when if you got a replacement you would get a little sticker with the new serial and barcode to put over the one on your box. Ahhhh, simpler times! :p

Now they kill your resale value by not doing it! Jobs must be spinning in his grave. Spinning!

And before someone chimes in with "it won't hurt my resale", consider this: When you go to sell it, the person that buys it will believe they are buying a refurbed device. They won't have any way to verify it was new when you received it. All they'll know is the numbers don't match the box. Shady!

Apple could fix everything by simply not ever making a mistake. 1000% perfection would solve ALL of this TIM...

I'm on the IUP so it doesn't bother me.

So one week 39 unit doesn't have the machining marks and another week 39 unit has them. Sounds like inconsistent QC.

The only pattern we've seen so far is this seems to affect mostly the Plus units. Hopefully Apple will eventually get around to fixing it.

Yeah I think so. Reading this thread made me recheck my 7 JB and mine definitely doesn't have this. I took pictures with flash and I see nothing.

Received my replacement in the mail today, absolutely zero signs of this "defect." I'm guessing the phones aren't supposed to be this way. Restoring my new phone now.

Glad you finally got it brother. Im still waiting on mine. Mine will be captured to be evaluated and they'll be sending out a replacement sometime this week. Not sure why its taking my end so long but it'll be here soon. Where did it ship out from?

From PA. Got it two days after the request was made.

No No No! You can't pay Apple $1000 and expect 10000 percent points flawless. Apple will only give you 100 per 1000 that you give them. Tim is a numbers guy. It was Steve that believed in delivering more than receiving. /s

Really? When did they do this? I've had iphones since the 5, and have never seen this. I also had a 3GS, but never got a replacement. So I guess it's a 4, or 4s?

It was indeed! iPhone 4, back in 2010 - I dropped it and the weirdest thing happened: the LCD beneath the glass cracked but the surface glass was intact. Very perplexing and it puzzled the Genius who took pity on me and gave me a free replacement (whole phone, not just screen) - service of which is another relic of old times! The white box replacement had a removable sticker on the front which he placed over the label on my box. :)

You actually took the retail box to the store? I've never brought in my retail boxes when swapping out any of my iPhones.

Back in the day you were advised to bring the box, it said so on the Apple site.

I often still do, in case of the rare situation there where are no white box replacements in but there is retail stock; politeness and gentle persuasion has led to them swapping my iPhone out on a retail basis (essentially treated on the system as a very late return!). :)

I should still have that iPhone 4 box somewhere with the sticker over the serial. If I can find it I'll post a picture.

Just picked up my jet black plus 128gb week 40! It's a infant! will report back this afternoon on how it looks!

Having the exact symptoms as thread starter, on all four sides of my phone. Called Apple Online Store support to get a replacement. CSO told me the replacement would come in a week, but I received the replacement email stating delivers 6-8 weeks (Nov 21) ???

The pickup for my existing phone is scheduled by the CSO for the Oct 14.

What should I do about it? Ask for expedited replacement?

Thats what happened to me. Speak to upper management and have them override it. Otherwise you'll have to return your phone and wait your turn in the queue.

It is a physical defect out of the box. Call us OCD all you want, but this is similar to receiving a phone full of scratches out of the box. Would you return it, or use it because it does not interfere with the actual usage?

Pretty sure defects like in OP's pics make the phone worth less than a refurb phone without them. In the last 3 phones I sold, I don't think anyone has checked the serial number to make sure it matches the box. They all did, however, check for defects on the phone like scratches and such.

You are in a terribly bad mood over something that doesn't affect you at all.
