You'd find microscratches on the screen if you look in the right light too.

Some people were wrongly expecting it to be full of obvious scratches after a few days just like the mirror iPod Classic back, but the reports/pics here indicate otherwise.

This whole thing is overblown. I'm sure you must be disappointed as an alarmist who started a FUD thread.

You're right about the screen. We shall see how the jet blacks hold up over time. Less than a year until the iPhone 8 comes out so enjoy em.

I'm just a realist is all. Most online reports and even Apple themselves claim that the phone is easily scratched. Reviews online have stated that their phones were scratched just by using their shirts to wipe them off or by simply taking them out of their empty pockets. Yet some folks here claim that they aren't easy to scratch? Hmmmm, who to believe.... Perhaps some JB phones have a couple more layers of protection? Ssssssurrrre!

I don't care either way and they are just phones but to claim they aren't easy to scratch is not being very honest.

Exactly!

Again, Apple never said that. Re-read their disclaimer more carefully:

"The high-gloss finish of the jet black iPhone 7 is achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process. Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use."

All they're saying is the JB surface will show scratches more easily compared to matte aluminum, not that it's easier to scratch it. When something is equally hard, it's not easier to scratch.

Do you think the paint on black cars is softer relative to other colors and hence it scratches easier? No, just like Jet Black, the black glossy color simply shows scratches/swirl marks more easily despite having the exact same scratches as lighter color cars. Likewise, black iPhone 3G and 4 show scratches more easily than their white counterparts despite having equally hard finishes. It's as simple as that.

You're not much of a realist if you're misinterpreting Apple's statement. The real reason for their disclaimer is we've now had several years of silver/gold/light Space Gray iPhones and so people are no longer used to their iPhones showing scratches like back in the old days.

Since we are still comparing cars to phones, tell me how you can buff out a scratch on the phone, like you can on a car

That's besides the point. We're not comparing paint vs. aluminum, but black vs. black.

Black iPhone 3G and 4 also showed scratches more easily than their white counterparts despite having plastic and glass backs too.

Then we can't compare cars to phones...I get what you're saying tho but this is apples to oranges

The denial is huge with this one. Big difference between seeing a scratch and thinking there's a scratch but not being able to see it

No denial at all. He is reading what was posted and replying as an adult. It is you who are acting like children. There are quite a few JB owners with NO problems whatsoever. I chose Matte Black over JB for fingerprint reasons. There is no proof one scratches easier than the other.

I've got a few in the same spot... thing is though you can only see these scratches when you are looking for them. In normal light from a normal distance, the gloss, shine and smudge don't let them show. I expect it to be scratched, it's no deal breaker for me.

My theory though is that the camera cutout suspends the majority of the phone from the table slightly, except for the bottom side, which rubs against the table.

Love it overall, it oozes a certain classic Apple charm.
That's a good attitude to have. The Jet Black iPhone 7 is beautiful and at the end of the day, it's just a phone and there will be wear and tear. Besides, most of us will be upgrading to the next iPhone and the 7 will be a thing of the past.

Guess you don't know as much as you think then.

Most folks without cases claim they have no scratches but reality is that they probably either don't go looking for them well enough or not in the right light.

Well, if you have to "look well enough" and "in the right light", it doesn't seem such a big problem in the first place …

In the first few days I hunted for visible abrasions as well, and didn't find any. This gave me some peace of mind and in the future I will certainly not go out of my way anymore to find them (if they occur), when in regular light/situations I wouldn't ever see them anyway.

fair enough, I hear that

true...good point...I'm OCD and I would look for them lol

Well said!

I akin Apple's warning about the jet black phone being prone to scratches.. as the McDonalds writing the words "WARNING: LIQUID IS HOT" on their coffee cups. In today's society if a company doesnt out right declare things to consumers then they can easily be held liable for what is really common sense.

If you owned ANY shiny black device (Car, Playstation3, piano black accessories) you already know that black reflects everything! Scratches and defects that wouldnt show up other colors, easily show a polished black item. I believe the real reason that Apple advised people that the Jet Black phone would show scratches.. is so people wont try and use the scratches as an excuse to get a new/replacement phone from Apple further down the road. I can imagine the number of people who do this, especially if they paid the extra money for AppleCare.

Mac, why are you still posting in this thread? If you have a matte black, go and enjoy your phone, instead of worrying how much a phone you DONT OWN is going to scratch

You seem to care more about scratches than the JB owners themselves lol..

Unfortunately thats the nature of the internet and anonymous logins. People often spend more time complaining about how poorly things work that they DONT own.. than they do actually enjoying the things that DO own.

Find any Android vs. iPhone, Playstation vs. Xbox, or Ford vs. Chevy thread and it will be full of people doing just that.

I have my iPhone 7+ in JB and I love it. It honestly does feel like some people on this site are trying to convince themselves that the JB iPhone is prone to all these issues...and them getting the regular black was the right choice, when in reality they really wanted the JB iPhone. A lot of these threads are being started by people who don't even own the JB phone. Yet those same people care about the scratch issues more than the people who actually own the phone Lol. And again, apple never said the phone scratches easily. They're just more visible.

Seriously, this happens every year. The gold iPhone 5S got it. The 6+ got it. The rose gold 6S got and now the Jet Black is getting it. If apple comes out with a new color next year, that color will get bashed too. Just enjoy the phone that you have. Trying to convince me and most other JB owners that the phone is bad isn't gonna work

Seems like lots of people around here think the Jet Black iPhone is like my old iPod. Those that are complaining must not have ever owned one of these. This is after 10 years of use mind you, this guy still says "Apple Computer 2006" on the back. I think it just adds character, of course with the iPod release value is non existent since I'm keeping it indefinitely when compared to a smartphone. But still.

I really like the Jet Black iPhone as well. Have only had this one for a few days, but its a nice phone to look at. The smudges don't even annoy me and no scratches to the naked eye thus far...and I have handled it pretty rough. I think as long as you're not poking it with knives like these scratch tests, you will be fine lol

Its really slick looking, reminds me of sort of a black iPhone 3G/4 cross in a lot of ways but not entirely (due to the lack of the steel band)

I like how it hides the antenna lines, and my favourite thing about it is how much "gripper" it is than the other aluminum finishes

That said, the main downside is that doesn't feel as premium...I know it is aluminum, but it doesn't feel that way, at least not to me...it doesn't quite feel like glass either and not quite plastic, but little things like pressing the buttons do feel "plastic-like" which is a bit strange...it certainly looks premium but doesn't quite feel that way...it is hard to describe since it grips great but has a somewhat "toy" like feel. Its super weird to me, since - again - it looks fantastic.

Also, regarding the sentiments people had about the SIM tray not being flush with the phone: mine was initially not flush, but after I put my sim card in and put it back, it did become flush. It seems like you just need to push it in, and all is well. Mine is 100% flush, no different than on the 6s for example.

All in all, a great looking iPhone, and nice to grip in the hand....I also had a matte black one (and I may yet get that one again) and that one was pretty slick too...

Apple has it on the JetBlack page on the apple site

"The high-gloss finish of the jet black iPhone 7 is achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process. Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone."

Wow, thanks that totally fixed it for me. Mine came with the SIM preinstalled and I noticed it stuck out a bit. Pushing it in from the outside didnt help. I read your tip and tried it, now its 100% flush. Thanks!

it's in a clear case along with a ZAGG Clear Glass to protect the screen.

Screen protectors really are something i've never understood - that's pure paranoia. Sure a case if going to help if you're drop happy and it might stop with some marks in the corners from throwing it around in car holding areas but i've owned every iPhone since the day the first came out with Gorilla Glass 1 and not a single one of the screens has ever scratched. These screens are HARD, and I've never had a case on any phone until the 6s last year and that was just because I hated the grip, the Jet Black fixes that, so no need for Apple's bulky case anymore.

But serious, no need for anyone to use a screen protector, the screen feels much much better without one, it was designed that way - its made to be as close to the pixels as you can get and further more every screen protector out there leaves a line all the way around the screen and around the touch ID button - making it look like its got a hairline crack!
