Ye said that artists "get just 12% of the money the industry makes," and that it's "time to free music from this oppressive system."

Umm, yeah except Apple, Amazon, et al., are just distributors, not labels. If you think you’re getting screwed over by your label, produce and release the album yourself. Then make your own deal with distributors/streaming. On Apple Music you’ll get 70% of direct sales! Oh wait! According to developers on the App Store, that’s also oppressive.

I think he’s talented and I like some of his music, but he is clearly a nut job.

Well there's nothing wrong with his entrepreneurial spirit. Some retro people buy LP for pretty high numbers so fans of his music might jump on. I have a feeling the songs will end up on pirate bay anyway...Let's just hope these gizmos will be recycled as electronic waste and not end up getting dumped in nature when people get tired of it.

I don’t think i’ve ever listened to an entire kanye west song in my life. I’m obviously not the demographic for this album. But i applaud any artist who tries to take control of their music from the big music companies. Why create a separate $200 device tho? Why not just create a website & make the album downloadable to your phone or computer?

The only good thing of Donda 2 is that there will be Marylin Manson featuring some songs

Kanye West, now known officially as "Ye," does not plan to release his next album, "Donda 2," on streaming services that include Apple Music and Spotify, opting instead for a proprietary platform.

Ye said today on Instagram that "Donda 2" will be available only on the Stem Player, a $200 device that was released with the initial "Donda" album pre-installed. The Stem Player is designed to allow users to "customize any song" with controls for vocals, drums, bass, effects, and more.

As an explanation for why the album will not be coming to major streaming platforms, Ye said that artists "get just 12% of the money the industry makes," and that it's "time to free music from this oppressive system."

The Stem Player was developed in partnership with Kano Computing, and Ye is ramping up production to meet demand. Ye said that there are 67,000 units available, and 3,000 units are being manufactured each day.

Ye has in the past claimed that an album will be exclusive only to release it on streaming services later. Back in 2016, he said that his album "The Life of Pablo" would "never never never" come to Apple Music, only to release it on Apple Music a month later.

"Donda 2" is expected to launch next week, on February 22, and the Stem Player can be purchased online.

Why is this a hardware solution and not just an app with X amount of sliders for a song? Seems like a terrible solution.

I like some of his stuff. I prefer the music itself to the messaging most of the time, and for myself personally, I've had to learn to separate art from artist. If I ignored everything produced by people I don't personally find positive, I'd miss out on a lot of stuff.

This player, I will give a miss, because I don't want to spend $200 to listen to his new album. I haven't heard several of his newer releases, but that's only because I don't feel I get enough value out of his music to be invested in each album he releases.

Whether you love him or hate him, he's doing things the way he wants to do them, and he is used to lying in the proverbial bed he's made. Sometimes he pushes the envelope in positive directions, sometimes in negative directions, but he's definitely always trying to think outside the typically expected behaviors, so good on him; a certain amount of progress is due to thinkers that have some sort of vision trying to make that vision a reality.

What an idiot, playing the NFT-like BS game to the point where he's even playing against his own Tidal streaming service.

Unfortunately for human decency, way too many folks will jump through all the hoops for this album and thus validate this kind of ****** business tactic.

Apple must be doing something so dastardly and borderline illegal to get someone to protest them wanting to put money into his hands. I mean, the rage and belief in a sense of justice to avoid money that much. I applaud him for saving himself from the impurity of money from Apple. I'm sure the world will be the better for his actions. Good for him. ;););)

I feel like if he paid someone to make an app he might get more traction than whatever this contraption is.

but other responders are probably right… he’ll sell the thing than put the album on Apple music

People here seem to forget that his devoted fans will buy those 200$ one time use players, making him a lot of money, only to release the album in a few months on streaming services one sells dry out.
He is a genius. He is going to make a ton of money off fools.

Yep, same people that will buy the Gucci case for the AirPods Max

The "stem listening" experience that Kanye is trying to create already exists. Myxstem, has been doing it for a while and their technology is way more advanced.

Instead of a physical toy as seen here, Myxstem has came up with the concept of an "Album as an App" allowing artists to release an interactive listening experience for their fans that they can not only stem out individual parts to the song, but do a whole lot more.

Also, its an app. So its wayyy more accessible. Seriously, its awesome -- myxstem.com
