iPhone X will be like the PowerMac Cube. Gorgeous, expensive, and short lived.
Except that the '2018 iPhone X' (or XI or Xs) will have almost certainly have the same exact industrial design.

Apple became so short-sighted now, they only think they could make a huge pile of cash with the X, but didn't think of the aftermath...
Apple's margin on the iPhone X is lower than on the iPhone 8. The largest cost driver is the display for which Samsung is charging Apple a lot as they are the only manufacturer able to produce an OLED display with this quality. The FaceID components are also more expensive than the TouchID sensor.

1) You mean the security of throttling my phone, marketed as "security?"
2) Great, another dongle to carry. Can't charge my phone and listen to headphones with a dongle.
3) Wireless Charging.. who cares? I don't have to take the .02 seconds out of my life to plug something in?

1) No.
2) Attach the tiny dongle to your headphone cord. Leave it there. Then, listen to your headphones while your iPhone is sitting on a charging mat.
3) See number 2.

These are all non-issues.

Good move getting rid of the X though, that's just one big fail that's best forgotten about.
You do know that they are only getting rid of the 2017 iPhone X. The 2018 iPhone X (or Xs) will have pretty much the same industrial design with upgraded internal components.

#1 reason why I didn't buy iPhone X. Feel like there's a large cohort of customers who would appreciate smaller devices with great specs but Apple doesn't seem to agree. Instead we got the X that is heavier, thicker, and larger than the 7 was. My sweet spot right now is the 7, which is lighter and thinner than the 8 but still has 256GB that the SE does not have. Hoping this year they satisfy people like myself with a device that isn't bigger than the 7 but has great tech

the iPhone 7 is 5mm shorter and 3 mm narrower and 2 mm thinner. Are those really appreciable differences? Especially when you realize the iPhone X display is actually bigger than the 7Plus display? I agree that the iPhone X is heavier, but the extra heft is actually comforting to me.

Actually that tech is somewhat available.

Not sure if you've seen the coverage, but Vivo released a phone with synaptics fingerprint scanner underneath the screen and I think Samsung have just got a patent for front facing camera/sensor underneath the screen.
I have seen it, but thank you for the heads up. The whole situation is fascinating. A great example of how Apple often has to wait for technology to catch up to their vision.

Over the past year or so, there has been no doubt that eventually the technology will exist to put a fingerprint scanner on/under the screen. The question is, when will it be available/viable to iPhone quality standards, and what compromises to screen quality, touch sensitivity, and security might it entail?

As far as the Samsung patent, it might not be as telling as it sounds. I’m fairly certain that Apple already has filed several patents regarding sensors/cameras underneath the screen. And Jonathan Ive has stated on multiple occasions that they are actively working to make the entire front of the device pure screen.

I am not an expert on patent filings, but my understanding is that some patents are for an idea or concept that doesn’t yet exist, and some are for literal technological solutions. If anyone reading this has genuine legal expertise and can add clarity around this issue, please chime in.

I swear people simply don't read these articles..

how on earth can somebody think they are discontinuing it due to not being good enough? they are simply upgrading it and replacing it with the new model..not sure how anybody could get confused by this

It's clear apple want people to know this is the premium apple iphone while giving you options for the lower budget phones

Everything I've read shows the percentage margins on the X are extremely comparable to the 8, and the absolute dollars of profit for each X are quite a bit higher than the 8. The screen reportedly is costing about $70 more than the LCD unit on the 8 Plus (I've also heard $70 total, but who knows), the FaceID module is about $15 more than TouchID, and the stainless frame costs $15 more, so ultimately you've got component costs that are around $100 higher than an 8 Plus yet the iPhone X costs $200 more.

I dunno, while I do understand the use of numbers and encouraging upgrades, I do think they're going to move away from it. I can't see where they're going to go with it. iPhone 11, 12, 13? Or are they going to be roman numerals? The naming honestly starts to sound a bit stupid like that.

This is just my preference, but I'd love to see a cleaner lineup:

iPhone X
iPhone
iPhone SE

And maybe a Plus variation for the X and iPhone. There's enough there to spread and hit many price points.

If we look at application processors, we're up to A11.

Like many other products, Apple can also use prefix or a suffix to shorten the numbers.

Yes, the absolute margin on the iPhone X is higher than on the iPhone 8 (or 8 Plus). But the absolute margin on an iMac is higher still. Show me a company whose relative margins decrease for their more expensive products.

And those component price numbers tend to sum up to less than 50% of the retail price. If thus the component prices for the 8 Plus sum up to $400 and to $500 for the iPhone X and the 8 Plus sells for $800 and the iPhone X for $1000, they both have the exact same 'markup' from their component prices. Point being, saying that the component prices for the iPhone X are only $100 more than for the iPhone X while the latter cost $200 is misleading.

Interesting. I couldn’t love the swipes and new gestures of the iPhone X more. Invoking multi-tasking is so elegant and natural. Frustrates me to have to go back to the slower, less intuitive home button interface of my iPad Pro.

What exactly about iOS do you feel doesn’t work smoothly on iPhone X?

I have to mention that some of the gestures were brilliant - the phone almost disappeared. Spooky-ish.

Things I really didn't like, in no particular order:

Notifications and control center in the upper corners of a very tall (for one handed use) display were awkward. (I think Apple could have given users a toggle to move those to the lower corners of the display?)

ApplePay was horrible in comparison to TouchID (in my opinion). Instead of grabbing my phone and holding the phone with my thumb on the home button (which "just works" for me), I had to double-click the side button, then make sure I was looking at my phone at the right distance and angle, then confirm that it had ID'd me, then finally move the phone to the reader. It felt like a lot of steps with some opportunities for error that TouchID didn't present.

Unlocking was a two-hand drill for me. I realize that Rise to Wake could have solved that but I've always turned that off (battery insecurity). Grab phone with left hand, tap with right hand, swipe up with right hand.

I believe FaceID has a lot of potential and is going to be very shortly (maybe as early as later this year) Apple's only path forward. I'm OK with that, but I am hoping/expecting that Apple will refine the UI over the next year or two. And if they don't, I'll still use an iPhone because my Android experiences have been far worse - but I'd like to see some improvements first.

YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
Then I could have back all that info that was previously visible with a quick glance, without pulling down the notifications.
The Bluetooth, alarm clock and battery percentage icons don’t matter that much to me. Especially if it means a quarter inch of screen real estate.

There is a software solution that might make the notch work better for some folks like you: allow users to customize which icons are in the top “ears”. In general, I wish Apple would allow users greater control over their preferred interface configs, through the OS. It is a pointless bit of stubbornness that I hope they get over soon.

Unexpected, but as his phone is quite expensive, I can already hear the cries of foul if they drop the price on this.
Because of the price, Apple put themselves in a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. Whatever they decide there are going to be unhappy people.

Never going to happen on an Apple device.

And I would gladly deal with a bigger phone and asymmetrical bezels (just a top bezel) if I could get a 6’4inch screen iphone with no notch at all, and a fingerprint scanner on the back (until under the screen fp scanner is ready)

But the point is that the notch exists because of the camera, not because they wanted an asymmetrical bezel. So in other words, you would rather simply have a black band across the top where the camera resides instead of using the extra space on either side of the camera for useful information.

Perhaps it was a tad bit harsh, but that is all. You’re making yet another assumption, which is quite ironic if you ask me...
Again, not sure sure you’re grasping what assumption means in colloquial use. What assumption did I make? You literally chaffed at my responses, which were neither personal nor derogatory, and then demanded I never reply to another one of your posts! I didn’t make an “assumption” that you were touchy because you were clearly, observably touchy.

You aren’t really using the word “ironic” prudently, either. How it is “ironic” if the person you (wrongly) claim to be making egregious assumptions makes a another statement that you think is an assumption? That would actually be “following suit”. It would be ironic if you were to make an assumption.

After all that that you failed to respond to my questions, preferring to comment on our discussion rather than actually having it.

My point is that there is not enough space available on the sides of the notch for the little bit of info there to be helpful at all. I have to pull down the notifications screen all the time, when on a notchless phone all I had to do was glance up at the status bar. On the x, the status bar has become useless. So I’d rather there were a straight line with room for all the info, not those small "ears" that can barely show any info at all.
