The problem I have with in-display technology, is how much is it going to make replacement displays cost. Being a security feature, third party replacements aren't going to work. Touch id and face id have been separate from the display itself, removing a hurdle for replacements.

Screens are the most replaced part on smartphones and because of this, I think the should be as simple as possible.

When I had an iPhone with Touch ID on the desk and it lit up I would pick it up and look at it so nothing changed for me.

They do sell Qi chargers where your phone is propped up. You could have the phone be charging and Face ID would work without you having to move your head over the phone.
When I go out to lunch and I use my phone on a table with my other hand holding my food I don't want to have to lean it or pick up the phone is what I'm saying. I don't like always having to aim it towards my face in these types of situations. Sometimes I just want it to unlock flat on a table so I can start using it right away. Faceid is more of a hassle with stuff like this. Touch ID is still the winner for more situations where it wouldn't have this problem.

they cant be more than the 300-350 replacement cost they are right now imo

Face-ID is not designed work with sunglasses. The camera has to see your eyes.

It also won't work with Halloween masks. What a flawed system!

Not true at all. FaceID doesn’t use the camera...it uses an IR sensor to read the dot projection on your face to validate against the FaceID scan(s) held in the secure enclave. I use it dozens of times a day while wearing my sunglasses. There are sunglasses that will block it because that have additional IR blocking but that’s not a feature found in most.

I can hold on to my XS Max for a couple more years. These things last so long these day, probably partly the reason people aren’t upgrading as frequently.

The deployment of 5G to NYC isn't even on the radar, as far as I can tell. If you want a 5G phone upgrade, be it Apple or not, the big apple will not have 5g for you. I'm sure in the next few years all of this will be sorted out. But, imo, many people, won't care about 5g as much as good coverage and decent speeds. The lack of 5g on a phone, will probably not hamper some people to upgrade.

And of course a 100% accurate, robust FPS under glass would be welcome.
TMobile is already rolling out 5g in NYC.

Definitely got my vote in for the return of Touch ID. In fact, as much as some prefer Face ID over it, I suspect their sales have lagged not only because of exorbitant pricing, but also dislike of the Face ID technology.
I'm still running my 7S and guess I'll be hanging on to it for another couple years.

2021? No way too long time by then it will be something newer. My guess is 2020 iPhones will have both.

This is just speculation...nobody from production knows what an 2021 product will have

Right, not to mention, changes with suppliers happen frequently, where things get pushed back all the time. The thing that concerns me the most about this rumor, is two years is a long ways away yet, and that has a lot of contributors to possibly change things in the midst of all this. Apple has lots of products or ideas that may never come to fruition, this rumor very could be one of them.

Didn't Apple themselves claim that Face ID is much better than Touch ID and that's the reason they were completely switching over to it? I doubt they would come back out with it because they believe Face ID is better.

Would anyone buy Face ID if they told the truth that it's worse than Touch ID?

Better if they offer both. Face ID for unlocking phone/calls/messaging then Touch ID as multi-factor authentication for more secure things like payments, secure folders, unlocking car, etc.

Face ID being worse than Touch ID is incredibly subjective. Face ID is better imo, Touch ID anywhere on the screen would be nice in addition to Face ID. Offering both is the best of both worlds and like you mentioned, great for two-factor authentication.

I agree. Face ID is good for keeping the phone awake while you're reading and so-on, but for unlocking I always found TouchID faster and more natural.

If this is the case, it would make more sense as to why they are trying to get rid of 3D Touch. However, I would say it’s not worth the trade after my experience with “haptic touch” on iOS 13... terrible substitute

Put me in charge.
- Notch goes away.
- Fingerprint sensor and face sensing thing.
- Single PCB with silkscreened component IDs and conformal coating.
- Nano SIMM tray replaced with MiceoSD, placed at top.
- All PH000 screws.
- USB C 18W, 10W, or 5W charging, selected in iOS.
- Headphone jack.
- Lower sales, I suppose.

There are people who don’t care about 5g who will upgrade from older models. As 5g won’t be in the footprint of many for years and then the plan will surcharge;
I can’t speak for the rest of the world put here in norway the to MNOs are already busy rolling out 5G and the plan at least 80% coverage by the end of 2020 (i think that was one of the requirements for geting additional spectrum) so 2020 will be the year I retire my iphone6, that is unkess apple fu**s up and manages not to release a 5G iphone doring 2020. One thing is certain the iphones6 will have to do untill a 5G iphone is avalable, I’m not dropping $1000 (
For a non 5G iphone as this time

My only complaint about Face ID is when I wear my polarized sunglasses. It never fails when I wear regular sunglasses but rarely works when I wear polarized lenses - similar to Touch ID when my fingers are wet.

I don’t have that problem either. What type of sunglasses do you have? Here’s mine:

Both are prescription eyeglasses. Top ones are polarized and have anti reflection coating. I never did anything specific with FaceID (like learning a second face with glasses). I just use it every day normally and when I got my sunglasses didn’t even think about whether they would work.

FYI, they are Oakley prescription sunglasses. My regular glasses are prescription Ray Ban and they also have an anti reflection coating on them (they have a green tint at certain angles). Neither of them have caused any issues with FaceID.

I have no idea. Maybe it's for app-store purchases or in-app subscription purchases?

End-users always find a way to do the impossible.

Can end users unlock a TouchID or FaceID phone just by picking it up? It maniacally goes to the home screen and you can use it without doing anything?
