I’m keeping my expectations low given Apple’s history. At that price point they will be cutting a ton of corners and it won’t just be the screen size and Face ID.

I have a 6s and am waiting for the smallest OLED, 5G iPhone. I don't know anyone that wants an upgraded 8 over what will come out 6 months later even if it is cheaper.

A sad reality, I believe, is that Apple is using the iPhone 8 (6, 6S, 7, 8, call it whatever you want) form factor because of $$$. At this point, the ONLY iPhone being sold with the iPhone 5 form factor is the iPhone SE, and those numbers are dwindling due to a lack of update. Keeping that form factor would be more expensive continuing the iPhone 6 form factor whose manufacturing processes have been scaled and perfected over the past four or five years (however long it's been, sorry). A great way to keep costs low and possibly get rid of extra product such as the front and rear panels is to continue the iPhone 8 form factor.

It's unfortunate. Just my $0.02.

Leveraging existing processes that have been scaled up? Yes! That is the primary reason they will use the same form factor.
Excess product/parts? No! Apple doesn't keep excess parts via its JIT manufacturing.

To all people compring a cheap oled to an iPhone LCD from iPhone 7 to 11. These screens support P3 color space and are very bright. My iPhone 8 gets so bright when I watch HDR content (not supported but makes a difference) it blends me. I can read my iPhone 8 screen in sunlight without a problem. Do this with your cheap oled, not even the newest Pixel comes close to the brightness levels of LCDs in iPhone.
Some people say 3D-Touch is not likely to be included. The iPhone SE was the last iPhone with a headphone jack, maybe the “9“ will be the last one with 3D-Touch, because they maybe use the ones from the iPhone8 that probably get directly attached in the display facilities. In general I think this iPhone will use a lot of parts of the 8. Screen, speakers, microphones, maybe even cameras. I think this iPhone is less about size, than it is about making the most out of a design therefore offering a less expensive iPhone. This is also very sustainable. No phone in this price range will have similar performance and longevity. This new iPhone will excel in small details, like being able to read the screen under sunlight, performance and longevity. Probably it will also be made out of recycled aluminium or even refurbished iPhone 8 parts. This would be awesome!
Battery life should be better due to the new motherboard but still just usable for people that are not addicted to their phones.
I really hope Apple stops exclusive iOS features. I also want to be able to change framerate directly in the camera app like the new iPhones (have the newest public beta). I would like the gesture based navigation for iPhone 8 the on off toggles in the lockscreen. Probably camera models are harder to implement, but would be great when also older iPhones cameras improve with time. My father has a Huawei phone and he got a camera update that improved the quality. He doesn‘t even have a flagship. And night mode would also be possible for older iPhones. I use Camera+ and there I can make free hand long exposure photos in almost complete dark and get cool results.

I get it - enthusiastic iphone fanboys (persons) who welcome all new features and rewrites of ios and the ever growing physical dimensions and precarious delicate-ness of the device . . . but there are alot of us who have jobs with a physical aspect that necessitate a phone being able to fit into a pant pocket - at work my company has issued me the bigger iphones, but I take the sim out to put into my SE - I can confidently sit on a hard surface with an SE in my rear end pocket

Yep same here. I have work issue cargo pants with a cell phone pocket and my 8 fits perfectly. My 11 Pro sticks out.

All I want is a phone that's the physical dimensions of the iPhone 5/5S/SE with the A13 processor and a edge-to-edge screen.

Basically take the iPhone 11 Pro and shrink it down to the dimensions of the iPhone SE and I'll buy it right now, even at $999.
Exactly. It has nothing to do with cost for me (despite me laughing at Apple's ridiculous pricing of late), it has everything to do with size.

So despite not updating it for 3 years, the pure guess is less than 10% of the annual iPhone volume...

This is why Apple wasn’t running the update the thing. Not popular enough.

I’m literally switching right now between my old iPhone 6 and an Xr while syncing Spotify songs, and the iPhone 6 feels to me like the iPhone 5 did upon launch—almost impossibly thin and lightweight. The Xr feels like a thick, fat and dopey design in comparison. The Xr is *just* wide enough that I can’t quite one-hand the text input, because the number/letter toggle key on the left is millimeters out of reach.

For guys (who don’t have a man purse) being able to comfortably carry a phone in pants pockets (especially dress pants) is a pretty big deal. My Xr is a PIA in pants compared to the iPhone 6. The iPhone 6 is actually a little slimmer and smaller than the equivalent 7 and 8, FWIW.

With the power efficiencies gained in the new iPhone 11 SoCs, Apple could afford to revitalize the iPhone 6 chassis and make it a premium device. Personally, I’d like an iPhone 6 sized phone but with “chamfered edges,” which, I know, is asking way, way too much from the universe. 😆

I’d say it’s an iPhone 8 in a smaller form factor. There are people that say they want an updated SE with all of the latest stuff like Face ID, but I think the majority of people buying it won’t care too much about the features just as long as it’s SMALL.
The rumor is that it will be the same iPhone 8 form factor, not any smaller. But aesthetically there’s basically no difference the 6, 6s, 7 and 8. So it just comes down to what features it will have. 3d touch is almost certainly out. And if there’s no wireless charging or waterproofing, then it’s just as much of a revamped 6 with new chip and camera as it is a revamped 8.

Let me understand this. Apple is re-releasing the iPhone 6s but in a smaller form factor and people actually want this?
You don’t understand. They’re refreshing the iphone 8. Not a smaller form factor.

Yes, people want it. The iPhone 8 has an A11. A refreshed model with an A13 and the (single) camera from last year’s XR for $399?

They’ll sell tens of millions, even if you’re not one of them.

Apart from the glass rear back on the iPhone 8 of course, it looks a bit different and a bit more premium over the 6 and 7.

Being expensive in those markets is by design. That keeps Apple the brand that "only people that have succeeded can buy". So when someone gets a SE2, it is to show up their friends with cheap phones. Just like getting an iPhone Pro Max does.

Yes, but it's not going to kill off the cheap branded phones in those markets. They will still dominate those markets.

Am I the only person who thinks Apple will drop the glass back and wireless charging?

Would seem like a good compromise.
Glass is more fragile anyhow and wireless charging is very much a mixed bag still and not at all some type of "must have" for a more mid-range device.

And if it was the same size as the iPhone SE, they might sell 60 million.

It's easy to make up random numbers.

The company who actually knows the numbers doesn't believe 4" will sell. That's why SE2 will be 4.7".

I believe the shape is pretty much the same. What are the differences in appearance besides the glass back of the 8? Whatever they are, I suppose it’s subjective to the individual whether or not they are significant.

I’m most curious about the name. I can’t see it being “iPhone SE 2” but then again I didn’t believe “iPhone 11 Pro Max” either lmao.

If 1 thing is for sure... Apple is going to make some record profits next year. Especially if they’re saving this new 16” MBP, AirTags and 6th Gen. Apple TV for 2020.
SE2 is just what Kuo has dubbed it. There are a lot of similarities; off cycle, latest processor, $399, smaller screen than mid-tier and flagships, etc.

Personally, I’m guessing iPhone SR. It won’t be 8, 9 or X-whatever because it’ll sound old right out of the gate, and ancient six months later when the 12 series drops.

If it’s a number I think it’ll be 11 since it has the A13, so maybe 11R, but again it just sounds older with each new generation. I think they’ll do what they did with the SE and use a non-generational moniker.

The new “smaller” phone will be the 5.4 inch iPhone 12 Pro. It will have a physical size between the original SE and the iPhone 8. The SE2 name that makes the most sense is iPhone Classic.

Small and with latest tech

or

Small and cheap

I think there are 2 groups who want something small, and I think it should be done.

Those old iPhone 5's were really tough, and easy to transport and hold and put in the pocket. I have a big phone now, but it's tempting to think about the smaller phones. Tough choices.
