I’ve had $2,500 stashed away for a new MBP for the past six months. Yesterday I broke down and spent the money on home improvements. At Least Home Depot still seems interested in taking my money. Wish I could say the same for Apple. The state of the Mac is really disheartening.

Same boat. I'm in the market for a laptop and there's nothing in Apple's current lineup that interests me. Even as an "Apple ecosystem" user, it increasingly looks like another company (Lenovo, in my case) will get my money this time.

At this point I'm ready to get a Pixelbook when my 13'' MBP dies. With Linux and Android apps it suits my laptop needs just fine.

As for my desktop the 2017 iMac should last 5 more years. I'm hoping by 2023 the waters will be less muddy.
At this rate you'd be better off getting a good Hackintosh built. That way you'd get to have the benefits of Mac OS and actually have a powerhouse to back it up.

I fully expect the MacBook Air to be refreshed only internally. The chassis should be retained as a cost saving measure, and to differentiate it between the more expensive MacBook and MacBook Pro.

The Air can be updated to include Retina and a cheap, low-power Kaby Lake processor (Pentium family).
I do wonder if they would put out a Mac with an ARM processor this year... I know 2020 was thrown out as the year that would happen but maybe they intend to transition the entire lineup by then with 2018 MBA being the first model to get the treatment. They could use an A10X or whatever chip is going in the next iPad Pros (A12X?) and it would be a lot cheaper then an Intel chip. Just a thought...

I slightly want to flip out. What about the Mac?

Don't want to whine and moan, but Apple's change in direction away from the Mac – as evidenced so clearly now more than ever before – is truly a loss for me. Been with the Mac since the early 90s.

Everything Kuo stated about new Mac models is dependent on Intel releasing LPDDR4 compatible processors. So far it's not looking good.

Strange that Intel can't produce a low power 64bit processor that can support LPDDR4 memory when Apple's A-Series processors have been doing it for a while now.

Does that mean there is no MBP this year?

2015 MBP has no Nvidia GPU nor access to Thunderbolt 3 eGPU. 2017 MBP have that rubbish faulty keyboard.

I hope they update the iPad Mini.

The mini is basically where the iPod Touch is today, irrelevant to Apple. As much as there are those (At least on tech sites) who would appreciate that form size for an iPad, Apple clearly has demonstrated they are moving away from that specific tablet size to incorporate a larger interface. Even smart phones are testament to where consumers want larger displays, with more battery power that can display more information.

"In the second half of 2018, Kuo still expects"

If you keep wishing upon a star ......:D

Mac mini desperately needs an update. but perhaps it's put out to rest.

I think part of this is that analysts don't care about the Mac because the Mac is not really a profit driver at Apple anymore. Thus writing reports about the Mac is not a profit driver for these analysts selling their reports.

That said, I think Apple has reeeaalllly dropped the ball on Macs lately.

Actually, the consumer portable should've been the Macbook. Macbook and Macbook Pro, simple. The Macbook Air was a transition period to a portable without optical drives, and Apple would've designed a Macbook to replace the Air altogether. But I guess they went too extreme with the retina Macbook with the single USB-C port, thus the Air lingers around.

I agree. The picture is from an old lineup. But the largest company in the world should be capable to maintain all parts of the quadrant.

I have started to feel Kuo's statement are more based on his intuition than any reliable supply chain source! So you have to take Kuo's statement with a pinch of salt !!

I had my first hackintosh back in 2010. After that I've probably configured a dozen hackintoshes for me and my friends. Even with a golden build it's difficult to get everything working at 100%. Updating is a Russian roulette.

Since the 5K iMac is really awesome (the only good Mac right now) I decided that my time and headaches are more valuable to me than saving some money. And, the 5K iMac is incredibly well priced if you consider the 5K monitor.

Stranger still that other people who make laptops using Intel processors don't have this problem... If they need more power, put in a bigger battery. If the case doesn't fit a bigger battery, make the case bigger.

They need to sack Jony Ive, get some designers that consider things like utility and not just overall thickness...

"Kuo on Apple's innovation: "We believe that Apple is still the leading company in the consumer electronics sector and has surpassed its competitors by a wide margin in terms of innovative user experience and ecosystem development.""

I couldn't agree more.

Apple is an incredible consumer electronics company; maybe the best in the world.

Of course at one time they were a technology company...

Because you want large local storage and Apple doesn't support expansion and charges $780/TB

Like I said, 80% of the PC market just wants to browse the web, read emails, play some casual games, and use Office apps. You can do all of that perfectly well with the iPhone in your pocket.

The power users... I have absolutely no idea why they hang onto the Mac, except brand loyalty.

As I understand it, Jony Ive is the second most powerful person at Apple, as Steve Jobs intended.

A larger Apple Watch will look horrible except on those who have Ahnold wrists.

It was Never specified or indicated the Apple Watch will be ‘larger’, the articles states (And Kuo) the display is supposed to be 15% larger, which inherently could mean that the bezels are reduced, while retaining the same casing size.

After last year and basically every analyst, including Kuo, saying iPhone X supplies were going to be so limited that they predicted supply wouldn't be available until now, I'm going to be pretty skeptical about them claiming supply constraints again.

RE: "We attribute the iPhone's slow growth in recent years to there being no significant replacement demands boosted by new models after the iPhone 6."

---

Since Engineering is typically planned years in advance, the iPhone 6 could very-likely be the LAST iPhone Steve Jobs had an influence over.

So then, what does that say about Tim Cook ???

The register-rich A7 in the 5s caused ALL of the Android manufacturers to stumble, & they didn't have a competitive 64-bit processor to use until months AFTER the iPhone 6 family became available ... that fact is never mentioned by anyone with influence (e.g., Kuo) in mobile !

The A7 was ALSO AAPL's last best-kept-secret ! ... few saw that coming !

10-bit color should have been introduced to the masses @ the 10-YEAR anniversary, with the iPhone X ... perhaps they are working on it now ... NOT holding my breath, though.
