I slightly want to flip out. What about the Mac?

Don't want to whine and moan, but Apple's change in direction away from the Mac – as evidenced so clearly now more than ever before – is truly a loss for me. Been with the Mac since the early 90s.
I understand completely. We have a company hell bent on building expensive products no body wants. The Mini is the classic example of neglect and extreme expense for what you get. The so called Mac Pro has become an industry joke which is promtly ignored by Apple also. Worse the form factor that is the current Mac Pro could have worked as a midrange desktop that Apple has needed for years.

The laptops for the most part are a joke also, suffering from neglect, poor configurations and high costs. Further quality has taken a huge dive.

So instead of Apple being nimble and addressing why users reject platforms they instead draw out upgrades or ignire the possibility of repositioning a product when one market segment rejects it.

In any event admit it you are rightfully pissed off with Apple. It is your right considering how you have been treared as a customer!!!

much like with the iPad i dont see a reason to upgrade unless my iPhone starts to get really slow or if i want a bigger screen to form factor. iOS literally hasnt offered anything worth upgrading as of recent years. honestly, why spent over 1.000 Euro only to go back to the same apps you have been using before.

Probably also one of the reasons why Apple is charging more, they know people will upgrade less frequently in the future so they have to make up for it by selling it for more in the first place

Completely agree with you. My iPhone 6S Plus 64GB is as useful today as it was in 2015 when released; yes updated the battery. My take is the present hardware is not substantially different and does not bring any productivity gains worth spending money on a new iPhone. Also, iOS runs quite well on this iPhone an iPhone SE as it does on iPhone X. Using iOS 11.4 this 6S Plus is snappy, and rumors have it that iOS 12 will speed up older iPhones.

Seriously, without productivity gains that will put more money in my pocket there is not any reason worth upgrading this hardware. Whichever comes first, this iPhone gives up the ghost, or does not accept iOS updates, that is when I will upgrade.

Just because one can afford the upgrade cost does not mean one should upgrade. Every year do you upgrade your stove, refridgerator, washer and dryer, house, car, and the like? Owning a new device provides bragging rights for a very short period of time; at best less than one year. Upgrade for upgrade sake does not make any sense.

It was Never specified or indicated the Apple Watch will be ‘larger’, the articles states (And Kuo) the display is supposed to be 15% larger, which inherently could mean that the bezels are reduced, while retaining the same casing size.

You only need a few mm less of bezels to get 15% more screen and there is certainly a lot more than that now.

It’s a catch 22, Apple doesn’t want to add a ton of new features because people will want to upgrade less frequent once you have all this stuff on tour phone. Then there’s the need to come out with new stuff to entice people to upgrade.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

iPad with faceID will suckkkkkk. Unlike a phone, I use my iPad lying on the desk, the way you'd use a yellow notepad. At these drastic angles faceID isn't gonna work.

Competition is a bitch. The primary problem Apple has right now is over priced hardware that people are wising up about.

Frankly i see Apple having lots of problems in the future if they can't get a modern iPhone out the door for less than $500.

I know that is pretty much my limit. I dont want a 6" iPhone either. I just want a modern processor in a decent package. That means no 3-4 year old SoC. For the most part i dont care about the camera and many of the other more uselss features.

  • Kuo believes the 6.1-inch iPhone will incentivize customers with older iPhones to upgrade due to it being equipped with similar features as the iPhone X and at a more competitive price of $600 to $700 in the United States.
I think when Apple went to the $700 minimum buy in that was the new "floor." I'd be surprised to see a cheaper large iPhone emerge.

I'll take an iPad with Face ID, though. I'll use that for face mocap instead of a $1000 phone.

Wanting to do iPhone app development, not wanting to make a huge investment until I see how it goes. I wouldn't touch an old Mac Mini, but would jump at an updated model. Not interested in Macbooks until the keyboard is fixed. If Apple is going to let the Mac line languish, how about providing a PC-based IDE? It would provide Apple with many new developers, I would think.

It was worth upgrading from my 7Plus to the iPhone X for Face ID and large display in a smaller footprint alone. The OLED display, new gestures, Animoji’s, improved cameras were all icing on the cake. I will, however, be unlikely to upgrade this year. Now, if the iPad Pro features Face ID, I will immediately upgrade my 10.5 inch iPad Pro. I also need a new MacBook and am waiting to see what the next generation may bring. A quad core 13 inch touch bar, 512 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM version sounds good to me.

That nonsense is why we are in this situation with the Macs right now. They boxed themselves in with a hardware matrix that can't even support Apples own software initatives. It is Apples inflexibility to adapt their lineup to user needs and mider OS needs, that has screwed up the Mac product line so badly. For example most of the desktop line up is useless for Apples latest AR/VR technolgies. The desktop products that might work are way too expensive for most users that want to explore these new technologies. It has been years since Apple offered a decent desktop machine with a stare of the art video card that would be plausible on the average users desk.

What is sad here is that they have a decent chassis in the Mac Pro to offer up such a machine. Just package it with a single high performance video card and a 4 or 6 core desktop processor. Some would call this a gaming Mac but in reality it would be the place to run modern AR/VR and maybe even AI related software. Price it at $1500 and you are good to go.

So yeah that matrix is beyond bad!!!

Someone should keep dropping flyers of this quadrant on the Apple campus by drone until they get it.

Kuo on potential impact on Apple of the trade war between the United States and China: "We believe it is unlikely that Apple will be directly impacted by the trade war because it plays an important role in both China and US economy.

From the 'FWIW' dept; I run small US manufacturer, which has some customers in China. Recent conversation I had with couple customers, I mentioned concern over upcoming trade war. Most of the replies were "we'll be fine, but US won't". They weren't offered sarcastically, or meant to be insulting. Instead, my impression these came from source of confidence, and understanding of the economic reality.

Of course, one can't extrapolate from a few instances to something this large and important. Still, interesting...

I will be very surprised if Apple introduces any new release iPhones for under $699.

The 8 is $699 now.
Previous year models are under $600.

My guess is with the 6.1” LCD phone supposedly being their budget new release phone, matching the current 8 at $699 for the lowest storage is more believable for Apple. I’m even skeptical of the $699 price to be honest. I’m more interested in what will be the differences between the premium-priced OLED models and LCD version to warrant the price difference.

Probably October with the A12X. It wouldn't make sense to launch a new iPhone with A12 and then have it superseded minutes later by an A12X.

Nonsens! The X series of processors has never superseded the processors in the iPhones. They are a processor specifically designed for a different platform. The processors will only become more different in the future.

Since Apple has been giving no love to the Mac and only seem to have a love affair with the iPhone, I too have transitioned away and towards a Chromebook (Chrome OS). I still prefer iOS for security on a handheld device, until Android phones receive Chrome OS, this is my only option.

People concerned with privacy of their files on Google Drive, do the following:

1. Encrypt the file/s locally before adding to GDrive.
2. Use VPN to connect to GDrive.

Done, I would do the same for iCloud files as well.

A cheaper MacBook Air simply needs one thing for me to buy one: a much lower price.
The CPU may be four generations behind, but it would still be a much faster computer than my old mid-2010 Mac mini. The only downgrade from that would be going from 16GB to 8GB RAM, so hopefully they'll at least offer 16GB as an option.

I think the main problem is that the high end market is getting saturated.

Nailed it.

Agreed. SE is the last honorary remnant of Steve...SE is the only phone left that has its design rooted in 4/4S, which was Steve's greatest baby of all time.

Totally get what you mean, but I see heavy, heavy influences from the 4/s design in the X. So that's comforting at least.

Hold on a sec. So no more, iphone 6/7/8 etc, no 9. But X. And X costs ways more. But they release a cheaper, 'budget' X which won't be the one people want.

We've been had. They have switched the $/eur 600/700 price model into $/eur 1000 model.

And sweet FA news on macs and professional machines.

2nd gen SE with wireless charging, touch-ID under glass, and edge to edge screen please.

WCCFTech has been running a series of rumor articles about the upcoming iPhones. Do yourselves a favor--read the articles linked below and become informed.

For those who don't like long reads, I will summarize:

1. Apple will likely NOT update the SE

2. in an attempt to push consumers toward newer higher priced models which will increase the ASP of the iPhone (see link for detailed pricing scenarios)

3. but they will make significant compromises on the 6.1" LCD iPhone 9 model in order to hit the $700 price point.

In sum, Apple is intentionally abandoning the upgrade for the iPhone SE in order to increase the ASP (Average Selling Price) of its iPhone line. This means:

1. Consumers who purchase the SE will be forced to upgrade sooner because the hardware will lose iOS support sooner, thus decreasing the time between iPhone purchases;

2. Apple's profits will increase correlatively with the increase in iPhone ASP; and

3. stockholders, not consumers, will be happy.

I’ve had $2,500 stashed away for a new MBP for the past six months. Yesterday I broke down and spent the money on home improvements. At Least Home Depot still seems interested in taking my money. Wish I could say the same for Apple. The state of the Mac is really disheartening.
Although I understand your frustration, please tell me what would you like in new MBP? Intel chips are not ready (those suitable) and GPU has almost zero improvement so what else do you want them to put in the MBP? Intel is behind so Apple has nothing to put there and by the looks of it we won't have anything until early next year. Its not Apple, its Intel messing it up

This could become a very complex discussion really fast. However the point of some if these tariffs isnt to do large scale harm in other economies. Rather it is to address businesses harmed in the USA by targetted policies in other countries.

Countries like China, Canada and many others block exports from the USA via a number of means. Often this blockage is irrational so addressing these unfair practices makes a lot of sense for the USA.

An example here is the smuggling of milk powder / infant formula into China due to the populations complete lost of confidence in locally produced solutions.

Another shocker is the EUs resistance to American food products, sometimes simply due to higher standards for cleanliness. Lets not even consider the EU's bias with respect to American companies and legal disputes.

I cant say tariffs are right in every case but we as a country have been abused for a long time now. Frankly i dont see tariffs having a big impact on the USA if they do degenerate into a trade war. At least from the perspective of China much of what we import from there is still junk we can live without. In the end it would be better if the barriers we already face came down. Also the targetting of American businesses with government support must stop.

It would be foolish for anybody to believe that a trade war will be good. It is also foolish to try to predict an outcome. However in the case of China they have employed many practices for years that have directly harmed the US so from that perspective the trade war has been on for years with only one side fighting.
Of course, one can't extrapolate from a few instances to something this large and important. Still, interesting...

There is much that needs to happen before this will work itself out. Frankly a lot needs to happen in the USA to remove incentives to use off shore resources. Id actually would like to see a higher tax rate for companies like Apple that invest domestic profits off shore.

In the end a country that doesn't manufacture anything is doomed for failure and a lot of social disorder.

Apple's product lines are looking more and more like they did in the 90's. Choice is good, but having to choose between multiple products with marginally-different specs creates confusion. This was why Steve Jobs worked to drastically simplify the product lines when he returned to Apple.
I get what you are saying but Tim is a big fan of the pricing umbrella doctrine which says to covers every price point from 350 to 1000 to address the full market.

You can build a far better MBA these days with AMD chips. Apple doesnt have to use Intels parts. Even the MBP's could leverage AMD chips to an advantage (especially the 13") This doesnt even consider Apple designed ARM based chips.

I still dont buy some of the excuses iffered up to support Apples miserable failure with the Mac Line up. There have been suitable upgrade products for many of the Macs for years or in some cases months. This includes both the desktops and laptops.

What is frustrating is the lack of price flexibity when it comes to grossly outdated hardware. What Apple wants us to pay for an outdated CPU and a paltry amount of SSD is a crime.
Although I understand your frustration, please tell me what would you like in new MBP? Intel chips are not ready (those suitable) and GPU has almost zero improvement so what else do you want them to put in the MBP? I don't know where else to say it so I'll just say it here. The mac mini is dead in the water due to the Intel/AMD collaboration for the vega-ish architecture on the new Intel chips. That chip/apu combo would destroy the lower end Imac sales.
