What about twins / triplets / etc? They've already mentioned it doesn't work with those, and I think (pardon any insensitivity) those are far more common than people without fingerprints.

Of course.

But in this case... it's not a very tough prediction.

"If 2017 feature does well... it will likely be in all 2018 iPhones..."

That's some Nostradamus stuff right there... ;)

With the weight that's given to this bloke, if he said that 100 asteroids were heading for Earth and would hit us, then half of you. lot would be flocking around his shirt tails waiting for more crystal gazing.

Meanwhile, in the short term, Apple is very-likely considering how-best to Drop Prices of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, BEFORE it becomes common knowledge to ALL that Sept (& eventually also Oct) is a TOTAL catastrophe:

iPhone 8: $699 -> $599

iPhone 8+: $799 -> $699

Apple clearly over-played their hand this year ... I suspect even Kuo will probably figure that out in a few weeks.
Same BS as every year. And every year they sell gangbusters of them. Where are all the prognosticators from last year that said iPhone 7 was little changed from iPhone 6s and wouldn't sell? All these dire predictions, "TOTAL catastrophe", "Apple doomed", "it's over for Apple" "lame product", "no innovation" ball...blah...blah.

Then stock goes up, splits and goes up again. Here's a prediction for you, Apple will become trillion dollar company over the next year. Won't that be a catastrophe!

Face ID will rock us , just you wait...

You're all thinking stratified , think unified. Touch ID is out , you can't use it when your hands are semi wet , the physical button keeps all your dirt gunk and chocolate y'all have in your fingers ... seriously have you seen the area around a well used 5s home button ?

That's what we all want, a device that will actually know who you are by face, you simply direct your attention to it and it makes itself ready for whatever you need. We always said we would need some fancy neural network or even AI machine learning. Well guess what , Its the future folks and that's why you're all sitting here NOT with junk outdated 8/7s's but looking for pennies in your cushions for the new hotness - X.

Be real with yourselves; that's all Steve was freaking saying :apple:

They didn't mention it doesn't work for twins, they said the probability is greater than the 1 in a million the twin can unlock other twin's phone. It will depend on just how identical and the differences in aging and environment play on each set of twins faces.

Good lord, is this ever a silly question. Apple would not have released this technology if they thought it had any chance of not being well received by customers. The odds of them going backwards are so close to nil as to not even be worth calculating. The only question that should be asked is how long it will take for this tech to migrate to the entire iOS line.

There presumes clairvoyance on Apple's part on how customers will receive the feature. Even focus groups aren't that useful in determining how a feature used daily will ultimately be received, and it's doubtful Apple even held any focus groups considering their concerns about product secrecy.

it will work with twins.. just that, if the twins are close to being identical twins, faceID may unlock for either of them.

thing is, they're freaking twins.. it's highly unlikely that either of them will be bothered by the other one being able to unlock their phone.. i mean, they likely have each other's house&car keys.. they've been sharing clothes their entire life.. they've generally lived each other's life since birth.

what you have to look out for is the elusive evil twin.. sure, they're out there.. very rare as far as i can gather but in those instance, probably use a passcode if you're buying a X.

Makes sense to me. Consider when you interact with another person. To get there attention do you poke em in the face? No, you look at them and make eye contact, then start your interaction. Now you can do that with your iPhone X.
Another good reason to stop interacting with live people and do it over your device.

Sorry to be a bit snarky here, but isn't that rather obvious?
a lot of it is.. sure.

that said, if everything he is saying is accurate.. such as:

We believe Apple will replace the existing Home button-based Touch ID with the under-display solution for higher screen-to-body ratios, if it decides to bring back Touch ID.

then that says Apple is, right now, actively trying to evolve TouchID further and haven't abandoned it in favor of faceID.

Apple was never planning on TouchID being integrated into the display. That is merely analyst conjecture, and, makes little sense.

Apple is betting heavily on AR for the future. And to realize the full potential of AR on a mobile phone, that phone must have a 3D camera. The fact that the 3D camera is also incredibly useful for authenticating your identity and unlocking your phone is really secondary to Apple's push into AR.

Because of that, all new phones released over the next year or two (and going forward after that) will have a 3D camera and use FaceID for user authentication and unlocking.

The 'problem' with Face ID is that it's automatic. You don't have the ability to "bail out" of an authentication process. You will automatically authenticate whether you want to or not.

With Touch ID, you're ALWAYS presented with an option to choose to use it or not. It's never automatic.

Seems to me, automatic authentication via face scanning with no user ability to opt out (if Face ID is enabled) could be abused some way by nefarious operators into duping a user into making a choice they rather would not.

Time will tell.
Thats why they added so you need to swipe up to enter the phone, so its still one move to open phone, just swipe instead of press and hold

Please. I have cold weather gloves that have special capacitive tips that allow me to use the phone. Gloves are nothing. Wet hands? Wipe it dry. Not that hard.

Did you add a turbo on to your iPhone to allow for Touch ID to work through gloves?

When 6 months of my year is winter, Face ID is a huge bonus!

say what?
why is using the phone while driving with touchID as opposed to faceID any safer?
you're not the first person to say this.
it makes no sense to me.

so you unlock the phone with touchID.. ok.. now what?
that's it? or you look at the phone? you still have to look at the phone to use it..

[edit]
also.. faceID will be in cars..like, built into the car.. shortly.

It baffles me that common sense doesn't make people understand this.
To use FACE ID, you have to take your eyes off the road or block your view of the road!
To use Touch ID, you can feel for the phone without even looking and unlock it, and continue to get driving instructions by voice without looking. If you have a question, you can pull over and look at it.
But unlocking it alone is far more dangerous if not more illegal on the road with FACE ID.
And you'll definitely be more easily pulled over by a cop doing it too.

How is this not obvious to people? Does anyone have common sense anymore?

And finally, Carplay does and will not have FACE ID anytime soon, possibly years if EVER, so don't even go down that road. The car manufacturers would NEVER take on that legal liability at this point.

Apple Newton sold out initially too. Maybe iPhone X won't fall far from that tree? :D

Could you share a link where they mention that it is "greater than the 1 in a million"? I would be interested in the actual statistical claims.

what you have to look out for is the elusive evil twin.. sure, they're out there.. very rare as far as i can gather but in those instance, probably use a passcode if you're buying a X.

I would not consider "evil" twins to be rare... well perhaps I have very great lack of faith in humanity, but it's not hard to believe, for example, in a dispute regarding the division of inheritance, how human decency can crumble even amongst siblings / twins to turn on each other.

More relevantly though, I'm pretty certain that Touch ID would be far more secure than Face ID when it comes to distinguishing between twins.

hmm.
you can do that without touchID or faceID.

Apple, or any other company for that matter, does not want you to physically interact with a phone.. while you're driving... in any way shape or form..

it's illegal and for good reason.

they want you to talk to it instead..it's way way safer.. so the things that are acceptable to do while driving (like-- asking for directions.. or play this song.. etc) are voice controlled.. you don't touch the phone.

No need for that. I go old school with the passcode by hand. Not a big deal, really. Winter is normally cold where I live at with hat, scarf and peacoat or heavy coat. If I needed to check something such as a text message or incoming alert, that's where a smartwatch would in handy during that season. Just pull up my sleeve without checking the phone. Plus, the vibration on the watch will alert me since I can't hear it.

Well duh. LOL. Sometimes I want to be paid to say obvious things like this.
His prediction is quite specific. He says that if it is well-received, all new models next year will have it. If face id takes longer to become accepted, then they may phase it in over a longer time period.

I hope they bring it to iMac Pro and to other Macs as well. It solves the problem of having to incorporate Touch ID into wireless keyboards. Those who use MacBooks docked to external displays may still need to use passwords.

I’d like to see face ID (or Touch ID) used to authenticate saved credentials and credit cards in safari and apps that use the keychain. Or an option to automatically lock your screen if you step away for a specified amount of time. And seamlessly unlock when you return.

And finally, Carplay does and will not have FACE ID anytime soon, possibly years if EVER, so don't even go down that road. The car manufacturers would NEVER take on that legal liability at this point.
not Carplay really.
you sit down.. the car recognizes you as allowable driver/rider.. all the stuff (mirrors/seats/volume/etc) conforms to your personal settings... turn it on if you want.. tell it were to take you.. etc

without having a car key.

.
the car will recognize you.. your face..
(or other similar means of recognition)

If there are posts about FaceID not faring well, or Apple decides to include TouchID in the next or later iPhone... there will be a whole boatload of buyers remorse all over.

I don't like it big brother.
heh.. we're (general population) seeing tech now that big brother has had for years..

like--> here's what's about to happen and it's going to be a kind of weird for a while..

people are going to use the animoji stuff.. and it's going to be fun and neat etc..
more masks will be made by others to build upon the animals collection..
and that will be cool too.. fire breathing and stuff like that..
someone will make a george bush mask..
and youre going to use it and be amazed at how real it looks etc..
then you're going to start wondering -- who, or what, exactly have we been seeing when we're watching television
