I recently came by a used 12 leather case. Not thrilled by some of the photos people have posted regarding the wearing in/patina for the 12 series of leather cases, I decided to roll the bones and see what I can do with supplies I already have.
I started with citrasolve and a paper towel, in lieu of Tub o’ Towels, and managed to remove some of the paint like finish. This worked, but was a bit of a slog. The dark areas are wet from the case being rinsed with water. Once it dried it was less noticeable.

Next I took a 2”x2” pad of white scotchbrite, citrasolve and enough hot water to keep the pad wet and began slowly working in an up/down pattern on the case. This worked better and resulted in the removal of most of the finish. The case is wet from being rinsed off with warm water. I patted if dry with a towel. I then applied Kiwi saddle soap and wiped it off. The saddle soap has lanolin which I thought would be good for the leather as it dried.

This is how it now looks having dried overnight. Note that it’s possible to see a dark ring where the MagSafe is located. This leather is THIN.

My next steps are undetermined but I’m thinking I’ll use a bit of coffee to darken it up and then buff beeswax into the leather. I’m open to other suggestions, if someone has ideas of finishes or sealants. The leather feels dry now so I feel like it needs something to protect it from drying out and cracking.
Nevermind, I found your method. 👍🏻

If I decide to get the Apple case I have some magic eraser wipes as well as the “brick” that I may try. Or I’ll use purell hand wipes.
Yeah no shortage of options. Elbow grease and patience is my advice. Remove only what you need to remove.
I suggest anyone thinking of doing this, if you already have the case and are willing to throw caution to the wind, go for it. I do not recommend buying the case to give it this treatment. The long term wearability is still unknown.

How did you strip the finish off?

Compared to the Apple case, how thick is the Nomad? I’m afraid it’ll be bulkier than I want.

I have both. It’s so close it’s not worth posting pics to show the difference. Nomad is about 3-4mm taller and 2mm wider than the Apple leather case. It’s slightly thicker as well, maybe by 1mm. You can probably find the specs for each and verify. The Nomad is a nice case, felt lined for the glass back, fits snug and the sides have a nice matte finish on them. I wish the buttons had more flex but overall it’s a great case.
Edit: I put my calipers on both. The Nomad came in 1mm thicker than the Apple leather case, @ 11mm.

It's a lot thicker than the Apple Case. That said it wasn't massive enough to be put off by it, but let's just say - it'll protect the phone in case of a drop whereas I don't really think the Apple one will.

What seemed to bother a lot of people was the bottom part of the nomad case - it's got a pretty big bumper.

How is it on the pinky? That’s what I worry about with anything that isn’t Apple but my buddy has a nomad on his work 7 and it looks/feels amazing.

It worked for me - I didn't have a problem with the pinky - and that's how I hold my phone 99% of the time. It always surprises me how a lot of cases don't think about this - and have a sharp edge or something. Nomad was good with the pinky. At least imo. :)

Thanks. Pulled the trigger. Hope the button issue doesn’t get me.

I had the Nomad for a while but I’ve gone back to the Apple leather case, surprisingly enough. Patina-wise, you’ll def want to go with the Nomad. However the Nomad was just thick enough that I found it a little too bulky, especially compared to how slim the Apple leather case is. What Apple did with the coating this year truly is a tragedy, but aside from that, the slim form factor and the responsive buttons are what keeps this case in my weekly rotation.

Yes. I just can't seem to get over this tragedy :-( Apple is my goto case always. Never bothered to check for alternatives. This year, there are so many leather cases, but there is not a single onw with the design exactly as Apple, but with better leather...

This is what I can’t get over. That no other manufacturer has used the Apple design but with better leather.

I succumbed to the custom patina process. On the left, my iPhone 12 Pro SB Apple leather case. Used it for a month. On the right, my freshly custom patina’d iPhone 12 Pro Max SB Apple leather case (still in the drying process).

Process is extremely similar to others here.

1. Used magic eraser, slightly damp.
2. Rinsed off debris under hot water. Blotted dry with clean towel. Let air dry.
3. Took 320 grit sandpaper to the whole thing. Then used canned air to blow off the debris from sanding.
4. Applied two coats of Cadillac Leather Lotion.
5. Let air dry and clean excess leather lotion around buttons and ports.

Can’t wait to put this on my silver 12 PM once it’s dry. It actually feels and smells like real leather now.

I’ve been using my blue leather for a month now, and it’s darkening up quite nicely, on the bottom edge the corner has started to “blacken” but the colouring is not just staying on the edges it’s gradually moving to the back as well, I’m not doing anything to speed up the aging, and I’m quite happy with the Apple leather so far...

Nomad should do it instead of adding bulky plastic, crappy buttons , and their branding. Their leather is good, shame the design is bad.
