I really don’t think its real genuine leather anymore, some kind of synthetic. But yea the baltic blue and saddle brown both immediately turned black when I lightly dabbed the solution on them!! At least now my baltic blue looks better and dont have to throw it away!
It’s unproductive to make claims like this when you don’t have any idea.

It’s definitely still high quality leather. It most likely would fall under semi-aniline as the pores are still visible, rather than the aniline leather Apple has used in the past. I would suggest reading up on semi-aniline leather on google. It’s essentially the same leather with a light coating of pigment. It’s used in many luxury products and is more waterproof, stain proof and durable than aniline leather.

The leather is still dyed underneath the pigment, the darker brown dyed leather surface becomes visible when the pigment starts to wear off, first from the edges due to increased wear.

Its definitely not the “European leather” anymore! I dont think anyone can tell you what the material is. Its either a synthetic blend or sourced from an animal that even Apple does not know or care to know.

As far as I know, Apple never tells iPhone leather cases are made from European leather. The Apple leather watch bands are.

Interestingly wearing just like the apple case. Dark or back on edges. Just looks worse on apple’s.
That’s because of the sharp edges only difference is this actual full grain leather and apples leather is painted so the paint rubs off and just looks bad

If something is being painted on, then that ain’t leather.

Look at the yellow leather case above…the color is deep. But apparently, whatever the color/dye that is used, the leather turns blackish with wear (top coating comes off) Or due to alcohol/wipes/etc..

Idk... but that’s why only use the apple leather case every now and then because I don’t want that happening. That’s not patina that reminds me of when a car interior gets stained

Update on my search: after returning 4 black leather cases to Amazon the 5th seems to fit. It hasn’t popped off a corner in the three days I’ve had it.

Pretty close to apples also because I worked them a bit when I first got it
Worked them how? I have a blue Grams28 case which I’m really happy with, but I kinda want a brown leather variant also which they don’t offer so this seems like a great option. Also do you have photos of your phone in the case?

they case has to be off the phone and just them inward and outward back and fourth

In the video…skip to 5:55 mark. The leather color/pigment is deep...not just superficial. And the leather is thick leather (relatively).

I think that the idea a few posts above is correct. Alcohol/sanitizer wipes/sweat/friction take off the protective coating which then allows the underneath leather to “age” quicker when exposed to these elements. Apple is using real leather (not sure from what animal…but knowing Apple’s reputation, probably cow). It is NOT painted on anything.

Here is a great explanation…much better than what I can type:

In other words, the leather for this year iPhone 12 is the same (probably) as past years. BUT, due to the many edges (square design), Apple had to apply a thicker coating than previous years; otherwise, the edges will be come dark in a few days…which will result in mass panic by Apple fans…leather-gate! :D

By appling thicker coating to prevent pre-mature patina, the back and sides keep their color much longer (less patina) BUT the edges will age quicker due to wear & tear (which strips the coating) on the edges. Thus, you have the edges darkening quicker than the rest of the case.

So, in conclusion, there is nothing “cheap” about this year’s leather nor is it a “leather coating”. Apple applied thicker coating this year which causes uneven patina due to square design.

There’s nothing cheap about it. It just looks ugly lol
