Is it safe to just upgrade from a previous JB FW? I've never actually done that before. What would I lose? Would I be wasting a bunch of data as the unjailbroken FW would not read the cydia apps and so on?

Also what does unpatchable mean exactly? Can I upgrade to 4.2 once it's out without jailbreaking again or does it just mean the same exploit can be used with any firmware afterwards? I've been out of the loop for a while so forgive me for my 'noobiness'.

so it seems those of us with a jailbroken 4.0.1 would have to upgrade to 4.1 (losing our JB) and then re-jailbreak.

Any chance greenpois0n would prevent us from losing the JB (and all the customizations) we already have???

It's such a pain to remember all the apps / settings you have from Cydia.

That's why you spend $4.99 and buy a good backup/restore package from Cydia. It's called PkgBackup and it works fantastically. Backs up every tweak and app you've added from Cydia (completely selectable) and same with the restore process once you've re-done your phone again. Best $5 I ever spent I do believe.

I just upgraded to 4.1 jailbreak on my iPhone4. On 4.01 3G Unrestrictor worked fine for Facetime, since upgrading to 4.1 it no longer works over 3G. Anyone else having this problem, hopefully it will be patched.

On Chronic Dev's Twitter:

"Not sure if geo's exploit works on the AppleTV. If not, we still need to save SHAtter, so now ATV owners may have to suffer (hopefully not)"

Okay.. I'm confused..

The SHAtter exploit is an exploit that's built in the hardware? Thus the "jailbroken forever unless they fix it in a new hardware revision" right?

Then what's the deal with "burning" two exploits?

Does anyone know why i wont be able to use Limerain on my baseband preserved iphone 4 on 4.1 1.59?

Yes, it's a bootrom exploit so it can't be fixed without a hardware upgrade. But a spare exploit can be used for when Apple do said hardware upgrade.

If you are ever able to do what geo has done you can show us all how to act. I won't hold my breath.:D

So, we're supposed to tolerate arrogant, narcissistic attention whores simply because we can't do what they do? Geez, what an immature attitude.

so whats the verdict? anyone with iphone 4's running limerain flawlessly? I want to update and JB but not if its going to be super buggy.

You are 100% correct. Cronic Dev are no different than Geohot. They are being just as immature as he is in this case. They should just swallow the bullet and hold release.

I'm sorry, I don't see it. According to what I've seen, the dev team asked geohot to hold off a bit so they could talk and figure what to do. He agreed, and then leaked it anyway. That is why there's that twitter post where he says he doesn't want to put it on Github so he can get donations and credit on Wikipedia.

Now, it seems from the dev team's twitter feeds that they're planning on delaying their tool so they can integrate geohot's exploit instead. This will delay their tool.

I'm just not seeing any signs of immaturity on their part.

Hopefully his exploit works on the Apple TV, or there's going to be some grumbling over there.

I'm on 4.1 so just want to JB. Not bothered if it's buggy - I'll just restore and use GP when it shows up if so? Aside from the wasting a second exploit, I personally can't see the biggy?

I don't think you will know that for a while... for me blackra1n was buggy after i used my iPhone in the car w/ iPod hookup, sometimes the soundn't work on the iPhone until a reboot ... it will take a while for people to actually test out the jb.

It'll probably take a few days to know for sure. If I recall, we didn't start seeing the problems caused by blackrain for a few days.

Mine was buggy after about 7 months from blackrain use, but I guess it depends on what programs you throw at it. Right now it'll probably run fine until you test out Cydia apps on it. If it doesn't work well for you try out the greenpoison one tomorrow and see if it helps out (if it comes out on time).

im probably going to hold off til tues. cause im going away tomorrow and wont be back til monday. so being away without everything I need and my phone acting crazy would suck. If I still had my macbook id take the chance because I could fix it on the road.

So I guess this means I won't have to wait a month to jailbreak my 3GS?

As far as I'm concerned this is good news. There will ALWAYS be more exploits.

There will not always be an exploit. If you were around in the DirectTV hacking days, we thought the same thing. But as we'd find one, they'd patch it. Then they changed the hardware. We'd find an exploit. They'd change cards again and finally, no more hacking. They got it right. Apple seems determined to stop jail breaking. They'll fix their hardware and continue working to fix every exploit that is found. Eventually they'll get it right and the game will be over. Fortunately with the bootrom exploit, we should always be able to jailbreak existing devices. But in less then 5 years, who wants an iPhone 2G? In 5 years no one will want an iPhone. 4.

My experience tells me that it is important to save these exploits if you want to play the game longer. The hacking community needs to get together. The geohot wildcard player does not benefit anyone in the long run. He could have easily been a team player and everyone could benefit. Otherwise he might as well ask Apple for a job.

Someone tell me what I'm doing wrong.

I've booted into Windows in Parallels, selected my iPhone 4 so only Windows/Parallels recognizes it. When I press "Make it Ra1n" the button changes to "Waiting for device..." and just stays there. Do I need to restore my iPhone 4 to a clean install of 4.1?

(I've been on 4.1 for a few weeks now)

I'm guessing you need to do it on an actual Windows PC or with Bootcamp on a Mac, not on a Windows virtualization software.

No, you tolerate it because not tolerating it is a waste of time and energy. Take the good and leave the bad or cry like a jealous little baby and still use his work/or not. Which would be the more mature choice because those are the only ones you have.

I guess I was wrong about geohot not releasing his exploit. His is much better, it was stupid of the Chronic Dev Team to release an exploit only for A4 devices. They can be angry all they want, but they should have been working on something worth releasing.

Are you serious? Burning a second bootrom exploit, with a half code, non tested, buggy and hardly functional jailbreak is defiantly no worth releasing

Not defending geohot in any way but the jailbreak seems to be working fine for my sisters bfs iphone4
